Psychopomp / can you distract me from all the disaster?
There are parts of yourself that you hate; parts that you know other people wouldn't understand. And he knew his own worst elements had been passed onto me, this unyielding wrath that burns through my brain, turning reason to ash.

And the guilt is all mine—can never be fixed on another man, no escape for me. I killed you, I, god help me, I admit it all!
SOPHOCLES TRANS. BY ROBERT FAGLES / Antigone.
There is only one constant in life.
It is not change, love, hope, family, friendship, dreams, or choice. Those are lost to people at one time or another their lives. Dreams can be crushed. Friendships and family lost by bad decisions. Love and hope don't love you back. Change never factors in your feelings.
Nor is it the people on the street you pass every day, the cat on the corner who kills the rats running out of the gutter, the hero in the night, or the guy who always mans the perpetually broken register at your local bodega.
The only constant in life is death. Because, as you should know, these are all things that can die.
Where there is death, there is a journeyman: Psychopomps. Littered throughout most cultures in the world, they're impossible to escape. Charon the Ferryman of Greece, the norse Valkyries, shinigami from Japan, the god Anubis, the Grim Reaper. If you think about it, even Christianity has its fair share of psychopomps—Jesus, the archangel Michael, Saint Peter. (Controversial, I know.). Where there is a journeyman, there is a journey. The river Styx, the Chinvat Bridge, Heaven's Gates, the weighing of the heart in Ancient Egypt.
They are often heard but not seen. There is little known about them; only small things noticed in the corner of your eye. A slight crackle before a building is engulfed in flames. Green eyes flashing above a black mask. A freckled hand with burnt fingers. Bodies floating in a brown river, only charred remains left of their once human features.
Gotham River is the journey, and the Psychopomp of Gotham City is the journeyman.

📍you know how i said the last time was the last time? yeah that was a lie. clearly. anyway, i just ended up feeling that amarantha, like myself at the age that i created her, was rather two dimensional so i've come to fix that. you'll notice some changes around here now. while the story at its core is rather similar, its not the exact same in any case. many changes have been made. some characters are gone, some characters remain in the same capacity and some characters are the same. you'll see as you go.
📍this is STILL a crossover with metalbenders. that hasn't changed. sloane will always be a heavy part of amarantha's life/story/development and that won't ever change. so please, if you want absolutely everything to make sense go read DEATHSTALKER. you'll love it, i promise.
📍this is a heavy and dark fic. its not going to be all sunshine and roses so please read at your own pace or not at all if that's best for you. basic warnings are as follows: graphic violence, human trafficking and experimentation. any other warnings i'll specifically put at the beginnings of chapters.
