We Can Save Them
Chapter 11 : We Can Save Them
Back at the clinic that's when I first heard the screams and roars. I didn't waste any time with Deaton's warnings. I just ran into the pouring rain.
The water mixed with the gasoline still on my body, making it hard to see through the downpour, but I pressed on. The first time I saw who was running was when they stopped on the BHHS lax field.
Brett and his little sister. The rain seemed to slow as I ran in front of an arrow headed for Brett's head, raising my hand to stop it. All three of us watched it freeze in the air then fall to the ground. I turned my head to look at Brett. "RUN!" He nodded, turning round, grabbing his sister and bolting.
A swarm of arrows seemed to come my way, all stopping in the same place and falling to the ground. The assassin's came forward, clouded by the rain. I took a breath in, welding the water around then to stop falling. In their second of confusion I wrapped a ring of fire around them, compelling the water to stay away from the fire.
It gave me just enough time to get the hell out of there.
~
I sighed walking back into the back room of the animal clinic. I knew Deaton was about to tell me off for running out on him, still poisoned. "Caitlin, is that you?"
"Yeah, Doc. It's me. I couldn't see any faces. Just four killers, all of them wearing masks, all of them with crossbows."
Deaton nodded, turning around to hand me a pill, "Take this."
"What is it?" I asked, turning the small white oval over in my hand.
"Just take it. It will stop the aconite." I nodded, popping the pill into my mouth, and swallowing.
I ran out of the back room at the sound of the front door. Scott came into the building with a sigh of relief at the sight of me. Without thinking I ran over to him and kissed him, it seemed to bring me back to earth. I wasn't floating in a biosphere of fear, guilt, and regret. I was here, fighting to save people. "Are you.."
"I-I'm okay, Scott." I paused, "Thank you."
"For what?"
"Reminding me that, I can't live in fear." He gave me a side smile before pulling me in for another kiss.
"Did you find him? Did you find Brett?"
"I might have found all of them." I grabbed Scott's hand pulling him back to where Deaton was. But It wasn't just Deaton, Brett, his sister, Satomi, and the rest of there pack. They had been there since I got back, but never really paid mind to me as I took the pill. "Satomi. This is who we were talking about."
The alpha gave us both a smile, "I know who Scott McCall is."
"Are we safe here?" Lori, Brett's little sister asked.
Scott's eyes traveled around the room, till he turned back to me, "We're gonna need help."
"Just saying my blood is a little low right now."
"Then we're gonna need a lot of help."
"I heard Kira's back in town?"
~
Isaac and I paced down the hall of the Argent warehouse. Looking for anything really, something to keep me from sitting still. I heard the growls before I saw Brett staring Allison and her father down, claws out. "WAIT! Wait!" I walked closer to the situation, "Brett this is their place. Okay." Brett sighed walking back to the other room as Scott and Kira came out of it.
"Okay, Caity. You got 30 seconds." Allison said, turning to face me.
"We didn't know where else to go. Look they just want to feel safe Ally."
"Okay. Then we're here to help."
"Wait." Satomi came out from the other room, "I know this man. He may not remember, but we've met before." She spoke of Mr. Argent.
"You can trust him." Scott told the other alpha. "I trust him."
"So do I." " Me too." Both Isaac and me speak up.
"How do we know he's not like the others?"
"What others?" Allison asked, as Isaac and me stepped forward to look at the two Argents.
"Last night, there was a whole team after them. They used crossbows." I took an arrowhead out of my pocket handing it to the older Argent, "I couldn't see a face."
"They're hunters aren't they?" Scott asked as Chris twisted the arrow in his hand.
"Not if they're killing for profit." Allison paused, "Maybe they were at one point, but when you break the code. You're not a hunter anymore."
"Did you change the code?" Isaac asked the girl.
"I can only change it for so many people."
Brett stepped forward, "Can they find us?"
Chris sighed, "They might already know you're here. Maybe they're waiting for dark."
"So we're not safe here?" Kira asked.
Satomi turned to look at the young fox, "We're not safe anywhere." Not on this earth. "We've been trying to get out for days. Everywhere we turn, we find someone new trying to kill us."
"They're coming Scott," Chris stepped towards Scott and me, " They're coming for you too. You and Cait are still top that deadpool."
"They are not just chasing the supernatural anymore." I say, my shoulder slumping. "My sisters are on that hit list. So I'm not about to run and hind, if it meant them getting hurt."
"We know." Scott sighed, "We know Lydia and Lottie can get the answer from Meredith. They just need more time."
"Then that's what we'll give them." Allison said with a smirk. "No one else gets hurt. Nous protégeons ceux qui ne peuvent pas se protéger eux-mêmes."
I smiled at the Argent girl, "Et pugnabit ut salvum te malum ut qui non eligere."
~
I paced around Braeden as she cocked her gun. My hands burned with anticipation. I walked past Kira as she cleaned her katna, and then to the pack we are proctoring. Till I found my way to Scott and Derek. "We can save them, right?" Asked the former Alpha, looking back at Satomi. I just hope that Allison, Isaac and Mr Argent can get those trip wires up.
"They got claws and fangs but they're not fighters."
"That's kinda why we called you." Scott explained as Derek walked away from the pack of wolves.
"Well, try to remember I don't have claws and fangs anymore either."
"That's why he called me." Braeden said with a smirk.
Kira shook her head, "Am I the only one hoping this is all just a false alarm? I mean, it's possible we could wait here all night and nothing happens. Right?"
"Possible and likely are two diffrent things." I said, my voice low.
Braeden nodded in argument, "Scott, have you heard anything from Stiles, or Lydia yet?"
"Lydia's still talking to Meredith, still with Lottie. Stiles Malia and the twins are headed to the lake house. They're trying to stop it."
"What if there is no stopping it?" Brett's voice came through. "What if it doesn't end until we're all dead?" And I thought Isaac was a pessimist.
We were all quiet for a moment, "Then let's send a message." Derek spoke, "Let's make tonight perfectly clear to anyone with a copy of that list. It doesn't matter if they're professionals, assassins, hunters, or an amateur who just picked up a gun." Derek raised his gun, "Anyone who thinks they can hunt and kill us for money, is gonna be put on another list. Our list. They get to be a name on our deadpool." Deep down, Derek Hale will always be an alpha. And a pretty good one at that.
~
Allison took my hand from behind me. "Caity look at me." I turned to face the Argent girl. "We're gonna save them. You sisters included."
"What if this is the end of the line. What if them being on that list is why they die. You know sometimes I wish I could just go back and tell them I wouldn't take them Stay in the safety of earth 33."
"I don't. I'd be dead without you Caity."
"Neither do I." Scott came up from my right, "We would all be lost without you Caitlin Cheryl Roads." I smiled at both of them, squeezing Allison's hand before letting it go.
I stopped smiling when I heard the alarm signalling someone was here. "GET BACK!" Braeden yelled as smoke bombs of wolfsbane were thrown into the room. I raised both my arms to the air, feeling for the pull in my gut, watching the smoke clear.
Scott pulls me to the ground as machine gun fire starts above us. I let myself forget about being human, letting the elements take me over. I felt a gust of wind as some form of shield covered Scott, Allison, and myself. I slammed my eyes shut imagining a wall of earth covering Scott, Allison, and me. When the earth on the side of me rose from the ground the three of us dove behind a cement wall, the ground dropping as soon as the pain in my gut left.
Third Person POV
Stiles sighed, his human ears still not able to hear what Malia was on the record at Lydia's lake house.
"What are we doing? This room wasn't made for us." Evlynn spoked grabbing her twins hand, feeling the same fear for Caitin that all the Holmes girls were. She was worth 20 million, and they were sitting in a room built for a banshee.
"Yeah. I mean we need someone like Lydia or- or Meredith, and we're just sitting here listening to a stupid record player, play a record that doesn't play anything." The Stilinski boy said in frustration. He was also scared for his friends. Scott and Cait were his second family, and they had guns to their heads while he sat in a white room, not hearing anything. "Come on." He turned the record off. "There's plenty of other things we can be totally useless doing."
Chloe sighed, standing to open the door, stopping when she looked back at her girlfriend. Malia looked as if she heard something. "Chloe." The Hale spoke. " I can still hear it."
"But it's not on." Chloe said walking over to her girlfriend.
"Then it's something else. Something spinning."
"Well.. uh." Evlynn walked over to the other girls, looking around the recorder player till she saw it lead into the wall. "Stiles." The boy leaned over to see what the younger twin was talking about, noticing the black wire that led into a white circle on the beige wall.
He started to move the record player, so he could get to the wall. He bent over, pulling up the wire. It created a straight line in the drywall that him and Malia started to break. What now stood in front of the four teens was three speakers, all with a spinning device inside.
"What is this?" Evlynn asked, running her hands over the dust covered black plastic.
"The dead pool." Stiles spoke.
Malia went to punch the tapes, but Chloe held her back. "We can't break it, okay? I mean if this thing is being used to disseminate the list, then it's most likely not gonna stop till everyone, including my sister, is dead."
"Then what do we do?" Malia asked her girlfriend.
Stiles ran his hands over it. "It needs some kind of prompt or command or something, right?" Malia walked forward, "No. wait."
The hale pointed to a keyhole, "What about a key."
~
Stiles had Lydia pulled up on the phone, showing her the three black boxes. "You see it? There's gotta be a way to turn it off, right?"
"I don't know. I don't know anything about computers from the 1970's."
"Neither do we." Malia said, sticking her head into the screen.
"Okat where is the monitor?"
Chloe sighed, "Lydia, there is no monitor."
"Yeah. There are buttons, knobs, spindles, no monitor." Stiles added, almost dropping his phone.
"Wait, turn the phone back. Point it at the carpet." Lydia said, not seeing the stain.
"The what?"
"The floor! Just show me the floor." Siles turned the phone around for the banshee to see. "Where's the stain? There should be red blotches, a wine stain."
"There's nothing." Chloe pointed out.
"That doesn't make sense. I gave the $500 I was supposed to use to hire cleaners to Brunski."
Stiles flairs the phone, "Lydia, what the hell does wine have to do with anything?"
"Red wine doesn't just disappear." Lydia paused, "Unless it wasn't wine."
"What does that mean?" Evlynn asked her friend.
"The ashes weren't ashes. The study isn't a study. The record player isn't a record player. So... So maybe the wine wasn't wine. Stiles you have to find the wine. What is that?"
"What is what, Lydia?" Evlynn asked her friend.
"What is the doppleganger? They keep saying Caitlin is the doppelganger but I don't even know what that is."
"We can worry about that later." Stiles rushed out to save his friend, "Back to the wine. What kind is it, what's it called?"
Lydia shook out the voices, "It's a 1982 Cotes du Rhone."
~
Stiles came running back into the room, the wine in hand. "I think there is something inside. He said shaking the bottle. You have like a wine opener or..." He was cut off by Malia taking the bottle and shattering it on the floor.
Evlynn dug through the glass till she found the key. She placed it in the lock of the deadpool macnices. Turning it off. When it clicked off one piece of paper fell out of a slot she hadn't seen before.
Chloe joined her twin as she bent over to pick up the white sheet. The read down the deadpool, stopping at the last three names. Charlotte White. Evlynn Holmes. Chloe Holmes. Both girls felt a pain at the back of there head reading their names as part of a supernatural hit list.
Evlynn started to shake and Chloe couldn't walk in a straight line. They both started to fall. "CHLOE!" "EVLYNN!" Their names sounded so far away as they hit the ground. Blackouted from the pain.
First Person POV~ Caitlin Roads/ Holmes
I burned through one of the plastic tarps in the warehouse. Kicking down one of the assassins. The gun fire became background noise by now, just part of the haze. A blinding light that mixed with red eyes and orange hands.
I've knocked so many people out by now that I couldn't count. Too many people on the ground, unconscious. Too many for me to feel sane. A part of me just wanted to beg for help, slit my wrist and blood till everyone was safe. But I couldn't. It would kill the assassin, and they belong behind bars, not six feet under.
I looked over to Scott, his eyes being the only thing I could see, he was making his way over to Brett so I kept fighting. My body acted in places I didn't know excited, everything hut till my whole body was swallowed by a flame.
I became a bright glow in the dark of the Argent warehouse. Letting anyone one in Satoim's pack, drawing all the attention to myself. The orange and red flames started to turn blue from heat. But it didn't stop there, the flames became a burning silver around me as I fought the gun fire.
I reached my hands out the silver flames spreading, stopping at the sound of a cell phone buzzing. I picked up the phone of a fallen assassin, the silver flames still falling down my body.
A smile spread over my face at what I read. The Benefactor : All Contracts Terminated.
~
"Scott!" I took a step. "Allison!" Then another. "Isacc!"
"Caitlin!" Isaac's voice came from behind me as I felt a pair of arm wrap around my shoulders, tuning me to him. "We did it."
I let out a giggle, "Yeah. yeah we did."
"CAITLIN!" Scott's voice came through the warehouse. I started to spirit to the sound till I fell into him, tripping over my own feet at the sight of him being okay. He was okay. Kira was okay. Allison was okay. We were all okay.
"Please tell me it's over. Really over." I said gripping onto his jacket, my voice muffled by his shirt.
"It's really over."
Third Person POV
Lottie placed a jacket on Meredith's shoulders walking the banshee to bench inside the station. Lydia was still on the phone with Stiles as they tried to get 911 to her sister. She couldn't just stand over there waiting till they told her something. And it didn't help that no one has heard from Scott or Caitlin.
"Are you okay?" The Holmes asked the banshee. Meredith nodded, "I guess you are, aren't you?" Meredith sighed. "For someone who'd put their own name on a hit list."
"I had to." Meredith crooked out.
"Why?"
"Because I heard Lydia. I heard her scream in the tunnels at Oak Creek."
"Allison is only alive because of my sister. Lydia screamed but she lived."
"I know But that's how I knew it was the right time... To start over."
Lottie took a sharp breath in. "But with Peter?"
"He's the alpha. He's always been the alpha. He'll make it right."
"Scott is the alpha. At least the only one who deserves it."
Meredith took a breath in. "It never was with us. Too many people die because of us. We're the monsters. Even banshees. Even me. Even-Even dopplegangers."
"I don't believe that. Not all monsters do monstrous things."
"Like who?"
"Like my sister, Caitlin."
Meredith reached up to the Holmes as she let a tear slip away. "Like you. She kept the truth because she didn't want you to get hurt. I should've never put your name on that list. You didn't know."
"Know what, Meredith?"
"That Caitlin is the doppelganger. That you weren't born on this earth. She never told you for your own safety." Meredith paused as a pian rang through Lottie's mind. Faces pulling through it, a teen boy named Dean. A ten year old who lived next door. The memories she could never understand. "Oh god. What have I done?"
Lottie shut her eyes, the pain fell down her back. Her body seemed to stiffen then.. Well she couldn't remember what happened next.
