The Bite of an Innocent
Chapter Three : The Bite of an Innocent
I was walking with Scott, Isaac and Stiles to a morning practice before they had final tryouts. The air made my skin get covered in goosebumps. Well truthfully I had no idea if it was the air or the fact that Peter getting robbed led to the deadpool. Worst of all, I couldn't remember who the benefactor was. "Of course you're still the team captain. Right?"
"Yeah Scott you got your grades up like Coach told you to, right?" Stiles asked as we shuffled in by the bleachers.
"Well yeah, but he never told me I was back on the team. He just told me to show up at tryouts today."
"We got bigger things to worry about." Isaac said, taking Stiles' stick and turning to face me and Scoot, "Did either of you tell Allison or Argent yet? I mean Cait it seems like you're the only one she still talks too."
I rubbed the back of my neck, "I sent her a text. She hasn't replied."
"You told Allison her Aunt Kate came back from the dead over a text?" Stiles asked, taking his property back from Isaac.
"Does it look like I have the money to call france!? My parents work as elementary teachers with four kids. All teenage girls." I looked down at the watch on my wrist, "Shit, I have to meet Lydia. Look, good luck to all of you." I blow one kiss to all three of them, running away from the field. I spin my head around just once catching a glimpse of the players already on the field. Liam. "Shit." My phone buzzed from inside my pocket.
New Message : Melissa McCall : Scott said you knew more about the supernatural than anyone else. We have three new bodies at the hospital, as well as a kid who came in covered in blood. Could you maybe stop by after school, just make sure they were all human, and this was just straight up homicide?
"Damn it." I sent back a text saying sure, but I knew the truth. The Walcotts, the first known murders for the benefactor. Wendigos, otherwise known as cannibals. Huh, maybe I should take Stiles up on that supernatural profiling thing.
Third Person POV
Melissa McCall unzipped the body bag of the eldest Walcott. Pointing out different wounds to the sheriff. "Now I know why Sean hasn't spoken a word to the psychologist yet."
The Sheriff nodded, "He's gonna be in shock for a while, isn't he?"
"Yeah. This was his whole family?"
"Mother, father, older brother. Sean was the youngest. And the only one that got away. The question is from what?"
"From who? These wounds weren't caused by claws and fangs. These are deep cuts, a combination of sharp and blunt force trauma."
"Yeah that's what the ME said. Some kind of axe. I just need to make sure that we didn't have to uh.."
"Involve the boys?"
"Yeah."
"Well, I'm still gonna ask Caitlin to come bye. Seems like she knows the most, and is the best at not making a big deal of things. This way we can just make sure that it is just a homicide."
"Yeah, yeah okay. Just make sure the boys don't know."
First Person POV~ Caitlin Roads/Holmes
Lottie Scott Stiles and Me, slipped down the halls. "An axe murder? I got to say that's even weird of us."
"Yes, Lottie I know. But this is a family-killing axe murder."
"Yeah Stiles I know. I told Scott's mom I would check it out after school. Make sure it's truly human."
"My mom asked you over us?"
"Something about try-outs." I lie, I'm not really sure why I did though.
"Okay great why don't we go check it out now." Stiles already starts to pull back but I grab his bag.
"You have Econ in five minutes." I say, as Scott and Lottie open their lockers, which so happened to be right next to each other.
"Okay, yeah but did you forget the part about an axe murder?"
"You forget your Dad's the sheriff?" Lottie reminds her boyfriend. (Yeah, they became a thing after the whole nogitsune problem.) "I mean don't you think we should stay out of it?"
"Are-are you guys kidding? There's a family-murdering axe murderer and we're not gonna do anything about it?"
"You're not gonna do anything about it. I will deal with it later."
"So the three of you are just gonna stay here, go to school?"
"Stiles, I missed over a week due to the flu. I can't miss another class."
"I never hear of something so irresponsible in my life."
"I'll go after him." Lottie sighed slamming her locker shut and chasing down Stiles.
The bell rang from over head as Scott took out his last book, "Hey, so that thing you wanted to talk about...."
"Yeah." Liam. That thing was Liam.
"Yeah. Can it wait till after tryouts?"
I exhale before deciding, "Sure. Just remember I'll be at the hospital."
Scott closed his locker, "Great. See you then." Scott leaned over pecking me on the lips before walking down the hall. I stood motionless for a good minute just staring at the set of lockers in front of me. Eventually I tucked my lips into a smile. He kissed me. I mean we've kissed before, sure but never with other people around. He kissed me.
~
I parked my car in front of the hospital. It seemed crazy that I was really doing this. I didn't even know how to show that the Walcotts were windgos. But still I climbed from the car, walking into the building.
Melissa was waiting for me at the front desk. "Oh thank god. Come on." She whispered the last part leading me down a set of halls. She pushed open a door that said morgue, swiping her key over it.
Slowly she unzipped the first body bag that was left out. "Michale Walcott, he was the father. From the looks of it he was killed first." She pointed to a set of cuts, "These were made with the axe." I moved around to his head, pulling it back.
I pointed to a seconded set of teeth, that were currently still inside Michale's gum, "You see these?"
"Puncture marks?"
"A second set of teeth. The killer may not have been supernatural but the victims were."
"So what are they?"
"Wendigos, but I'm not sure why someone would want them dead. Maybe a rogue hunter?"
"Thank you Caitlin."
"Sure thing." The two of us zip back up the body, walking out of the morug.
When we got back to the front desk Scott ws checking someone in. Stiles had Liam's arm around his shoulders, and Liam had one foot in the air. Scott turns to look at me and his mother, "Hey. Mom. Cait." Scott gave an awkward wave.
Melissa just sighed, grabbing a wheelchair and bringing it over to the boys. When he took Liam away I turned to Scott and Stiles, "All right, spill."
Stiles lets out an exasperated breath, "Alright so we were at tryouts. and this kid-"
"Liam." Scott adds in.
"Right Liam, he's really good. And he sorta ended up body checking into Scott, and now he can't walk."
"Look, I got to go. Evlyyn's cooking so that means the whole house could burn down. And Stiles you have a date with Lottie. And Chloe has to go to Malia's, help her study. But call me if anything happens."
"You both of you go. I want to check on him anyway."
I sigh, "I don't need to say this, but, it wasn't your fault Scott."
"I don't know. It feels like it was."
" I mean if you had used any wolf power Liam would be crawling, if he made it off the field."
"I know Cait, but. If I hadn't been so worried about being captain he wouldn't be hurt either."
"It's okay to want something for yourself once and awhile." I shake out a breath, perplexed on how guilty Scott lookers, "Team Captain. Alpha Werewolf. Bottom line you're still human" I stand on my toes placing a kiss on Scott's cheek. As I walk away I hear the last bit of Stiles and Scott conversation.
"When will you and Cait, like, actually kiss? You know before she leaves the planet?" Scott didn't answer, "Scott did you hear me?"
"I'm gonna go check on Liam. Have fun on your date." It took everything in me not to laugh.
Third Person POV
Chloe pushed Malia off of her after their small make out session, "I promised I would help you study. But after we can go back to that. Like, like lots of that."
"So what's the secret, why is math so hard for me, and so easy for you guys?"
"Because we use Lydia's notes."
"When then someone needs to give me notes on Lydia's notes." Malia passed her girlfriend the notebook Lydia's notes were meant to be in.
Chloe started to flip through the pages. There wasn't one number in sight. It was like it was some kind of caod. "Wait, Lydia wrote these?"
"Yeah? What is it?"
"It's not math, that;s for sure."
~
Scott watched his two friends walk away. Stiles' words on his mind. They have, but they weren't a thing whatsoever. He sighed, making his way to the freshman's hospital room. He walked himself down the hall, still feeling guilty. It got worse when he heard Liam explain what happened to his stepfather. "I went up against two juniors. One of them's captain of the team." Scott hung his head at the thought of hurting the kid. He never meant to but, now Liam sat in the hospital, probably not playing for at least three weeks. "Hey Liam what do I always say? Play smart, not hard."
"Are you mad at me?" It sounded like the kid's voice was about to break.
"No, of course not. Your mom might be mad at me for getting you into lacrosse, but maybe we should both wait for the X-ray before we panic." X-ray? Scott thought. He hit this kid so hard he needed an x-ray? So much for not his fault.
Scott turned away from the door as Dr. Geyer walked out. His phone started to ring in his pocket. "Hey Lydia."
"WHere are you?" The redhead asked from the other line. "I couldn't call.. I couldn't get away from the deputy."
"Okay-Lydia Slow down."
"You need to get to the hospital. You need to get there right now. The son, the only one who survived...He's there."
Scott's eyes widened, "So am I. I'm at the hospital too."
"Then find him. Find Sean Walcott."
~
Scott barreled through the hospital looking for the Walcott child. Even taking a set of stairs when he heard his mother screaming. He got to the floor where Sean was, as he pulled his mother to the floor covered in blood.
Not thinking of the consequences he shifted and roared. Allowing for his mother to pull away as the Walcott boy started to run. Scott turned to his mother, "I'm okay. I'm alright."
"Are you sure?"
"Go get that son of a bitch."
~
Liam Dunbar struggled out of his hospital bed, walking into the halls. "Hey, anyone hear that?" He yelled after hearing the sound of a large thud, like someone had been dropped. "I thought I heard something..." This part he mumbled to himself as he turned to face the other side of the hall.
When he turned back around he saw a boy only a few years older than him covered and blood. His teeth were overly pointy and his whole eye white. Liam let out a gasp as he started to run. The only thing he could think of was getting to the roof.
So he started running heading for a set of stairs. But at the last step the other boy caught him, taking him in a coke hold. A set of teeth coming out of his palm, digging into Liam's shoulder.
Liam struggled as someone else came onto the roof. "Get Back!" The boy covered in blood yelled.
"You don't need to do this. Whatever it is, whatever you are, we can help you." A voice like Scott McCall called out.
"No you can't." The boy's hold got tighter.
"Let me help you." Liam started to struggle for air
"Wendigos don't need help. We need Food!"
"Oh god!" Liam struggled out, as the wendigos turned him around, pushing him off the edge of the roof at the sound of a roar.
He felt a set of arms grab his, but the boy covered in blood starts to take the second boy's arms off of Liam. Liam had never screamed so much in his life. "No! NO" His left hand started to slip, till it was off the wall. Then his right hand started to do the same. When he looked up the second boy had bright glowing red eyes. "I can't hold on!" Just as Liam's hand slipped from the legend the seconded boy bit into his arm, drawing blood and screams, till Liam blacked out.
~
Scott pulled Liam up from the legend when Sean let go of him. He looked back to see a man pull a tomahawk out from Sean's back, walking away leaving the now dead boy. The man put his finger to where his mouths should have been but it was just skin.
Scott didn't have much time to think about it as Liam started to wake groaning in pain. Clutching his arm. Scott McCall, the true alpha, had bitten a kid. And he wasn't sure what to do next.
