Malia
Chapter Two : Malia
My phone buzzes so much it falls from my nightstand. "Stiles? What the hell, it's 2:20 in the morning."
"Cait get your lazy ass out of bed. You have to meet with me and Scott, that Malia girl my dad was talking about, well she's alive. I'll send you the address."
"What fine whatever." I say in a still half asleep state.
Stiles hung up the phone. I sorta just reached around my room for a shirt to wear, grabbing the pair of jeans I wore to school yesterday. I lazily place a brown belt on that way I match my brown combat boots. I send Lottie a quick text before slipping out my window. Which for some odd reason had no screen. I finally get Stiles' message of where to meet him. In the middle of the woods. God this was gonna be a long night.
I park my car in front of the small cave/den thing. "Scott? Stiles?" I call out, not expecting it to be this cold. I was just wearing short sleeves and a windbreaker, so not ideal.
"Yeah Caity, down here!" Stiles voice calls out. I walk closer to the mouth of the den as Stiles and Scott walk out of it. "Okay so this is still a crime scene, and my dad is o- is that Scott's shirt?"
I feel the blush flood my checks as I look down. I didn't even know I still had his shirt, let alone that I wore it. "Is it?" I asked as innocently as I could.
"Doesn't matter." Scott said, the pink undertone clear on his face as well, "Look the cops are on their way. Malia, the girl Stiles' father thought died in the car crash, isn't dead. She's coyote, like a god damn werecoyote, I looked her right in the eyes."
"So, the two of us were thinking.."
I cut Stiles off, "She turned in the car on the full moon, making her mother swerve off the road and crash. She felt so guilty that she hid in the wood. Then over time slowly became a full fledged coyote. Right?"
"Uhh.. yeah that.. That was excitedly what we were going to tell you. Why do you always know what's in our head?"
"I'm just that good." I smirk but the three of us go silent when Scott flinches at what I said.
"Anyways, till my dad gets here. Why are you wearing Scott's shirt?"
"Who said it was his?" I said crossing my arms over it.
"Yeah. It's a shirt." Scott plays in my story.
"All right, you win." He started walking back up the hill and I heard Stiles whisper 'for now.'
Scott leaned into my ear, "Why are you wearing my shirt?"
My eyes go wide, "Uhh.. It was just the first thing I grabbed."
"Your heart's going crazy." Not for the reason you think, "But whatever. I really don't care. Hell you look nice." Scott straights out and follows Stiles up the hill. I stayed where I was for a few seconds catching my breath, before following the two idiots up the hill. Muting why the hell were you listening to my heartbeat under my breath making Scott give a half laugh.
We waited for the police to show. The three of us, just standing in the woods. "Stiles?"
"Yeah Cait?"
"Why is this so important?"
Scott sighed, "Because my Dad is filing a case of impeachment on Stiles' father. I just wanted to make sure Beacon Hills best gets to solve at least one more case."
"Oh." That was all I could manage. I mean what was I really meant to say. 'Hey Stiles sorry our best friend's dad is a dick. Wish I could help.'
The red and blue sirens covered our faces, as Stiles' father descended into the den. I didn't even know what he was going to find in there seeing as the boys took it upon themselves to come out here without me. A few minutes later the sheriff came out of the den and walked over to the three of us.
"You sure it was her?" He asked, looking his son in the eyes.
"I looked her right in the eyes. And they glowed, just like mine." Scott answered.
"It makes sense, Dad."
"Cait?"
"I trust them."
"But it wasn't a girl. It was a four-legged coyote, right?"
"Well yeah, but see that's the point that we don't exactly have figured out yet." Stiles defends rubbing the back of his neck.
Scott shifted his weight, "Okay but if it was a full moon and she did change while her mom was driving then anything could've happened."
"Horrible things could've happened. Ripping, shredding tearing things." I roll my eyes at Stiles negativity.
"Which is likely what caused the accident." I finished.
"Think about it Dad, all right? They're driving Malia starts to change, she goes out of control, then mom crashes and everybody dies.."
"Except for Malia."
I roll my eyes but go along with the boys, "So she blames herself, goes off running and she was changed for so long that she eventually becomes trapped inside the body of a coyote."
"That makes sense." The sheriff sighs, "In a Chinese folktale. Boys, Cait, this is.. This is insane. I need to kept this quiet. The three of you, not a word. I don't want anyone hearing about this. I especially don't want Mr. Tate hearing about this." Scott has completely zoned out.
"Scott?SCOTT!" I yell waving my hand in front of his face, as he stairs past it. "SCOTT!"
He blinks and shakes his head, "Sorry. What did you say."
A car pulls up from behind us, "All crap." The sheriff whispers. I turn my head to see Mr. Tate and Scott's dickhead Dad walk out of the car and over to us. Scott imdeitly looks at the ground. A large part of me wants to grab his hand, show it's okay. But I know after the past two weeks of not talking to me, he would just pull back. "Mr. Tate." The Tate man takes the small rolled up blanket from Sheriff Stilinski.
"Mr. Tate?" Scott's father asked. I refuse to give that man the respect of being called an agent.
"It's hers."
"All right, wait here." The older McCall sighs.
"Dad." Scott tries, turning to block me and Stiles from his father.
"I'll talk to you in a minute. I wouldn't mind hearing how your mom's okay with you running around in the woods this late." The two officers walk away.
Slowly I turn to Scott, "Your Dad's an ass."
He let out a small laugh, "Trust me, I know."
~
Stiles Scott, Allison and I stood in the back of our history class. Allison was holding Stiles' phone flipping through the pictures of Malia's den. "That is what Scott and Stiles found in the den last night. It's right in the middle of the hiking trails." Stiles switches the tab's on his phone.
"That is where we found the den."
"That could narrow it down. Coyotes travel in fixed trails But I think you may be right about her not going back to the den. Coyotes don't like wolves. And they are really smart. If they don't want to be heard they actually walk on their toes." Allison finishes and Scott flinches.
"Scott are you okay?"
"Fine. So what Coyotes tip-toe?"
"They tip-toe." Allison said, rolling her eyes. The bell rings from over head, "I gotta go, but send me the pin location."
"Will do." Scott Stiles and I head for our seats.
Right before Scott sits down Kira comes in front of him, "Hi. I'm Kira. You knew that. I knew you knew. I don't know why I just told you that again. Anyways, I have something for you."
"For me?" Scott asked, way to surprised.
"Yeah. About bardo. My explanation was sorta all over the place, so I did some research and I printed it out for you."
He huffs out a laugh, " Ah, you didn't have to do that."
"It only took a couple hours."
"Wow then you really didn't have to do that." Oh my god.
"I swear I printed it out."
"Kira." Mr. Yukimura calls walking closer to his daughter, "You forgot all the research you did for that boy you like." His words make me want to throw up. But it helps watching Kira's face turn bright red.
"Oh my god." Stiles whispers next to me.
"What?"
"You like Scott."
"What? NO."
"Keep telling yourself that."
"All right everyone, let's get started." Mr. Yukimura said walking back to the front, "We were just talking about internment camps and prisoners of war." My mind flashes with a set of images. Lydia standing over a passed out Stiles. Isaac standing on a hill crying. Kira looking horrified at something in front of her. "Caitlin!"
"Yeah?" I say meekly, picking my head up from the desk.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah. Sometimes she gets these flash migraines, they come out of nowhere and then they hurt for like 30 seconds then she is usually fine." Stiles answers for me.
"Uhh yeah what Stiles said. I'm sorry could you repeat what you said after prisoners of war."
"There is a passage in our reading that I'd like to go over in more detail.. I was just asking who would be willing to come out front and read for us? Mr. Stilinski, how about you?"
"It's okay, I can do it." I rush out, "I mean seeing as I interrupted class."
"Everyone participates in my class, miss R-Holmes. Mr. Stilinski, if would please come up front." God I hate him and his whole perfect kitsuna family.
Stiles sighs walking to the front of the room. As soon as he looks at the page he starts shaking. His hands move around the side of the wood, knuckles white. Stiles' whole body is out of reck. He looks back at the class like he was ready to faint.
Scott stands up from behind Stiles seat, "Stiles? You okay?" Stiles falls forward, Scott running over to him. "I should take him to the nurse." Scott starts to walk Stiles out of the room.
I shoot up from my seat. "I think I should go too."
"Mr. McCall is perfectly capable of taking Mr. Stilinski down."
"Bu-"
"I will not repeat myself Mr. Holmes."
"Look me up and down, do you really want to have the discussion, Now?"
"No. But seeing as this is your second time today interrupting my class, I would be more than happy to have it in detention. I'll see you from 3:00 to 3:030, understood."
"Understood." I grumble sitting back down.
First Person POV~Scott McCall
Stiles stumbles into the boys locker room. Falling into one of the sinks. "Stiles, look at me. Is this a panic attack?"
"It's a dream. This is just a dream." I was real, this was real.
"Stiles you're not dreaming You're here. You're here with me. Okay, what do I do?" I try to think about the one time I had a panic attack in school. Stiles gave me my inhaler, but that wouldn't help him. "I mean, like how do you tell if you're awake or dreaming?"
"Finger.. You count your fingers."
"Stiles look at me. Come on count with me." Slowly I put each of my ten fingers in the air counting them. "One.."
"Two..."
"Keep going."
"Three..four.."
"Five.." His breath became less forced.
"Six..seven."
"Eight."
"Nine..Ten"
"Ten. Ten." I repeat as Stiles' breath becomes normal.
He falls back into a wall. "What the hell is happening to me?"
"Uhh nothing good. Duh." Caitlin's voice came through as I felt her shadow stand over me.
"We'll figure it out. You're going to be okay."
"Is He, Scott?" "Am I? Are you?"
Caitlin starts a small laugh behind me, "He still doesn't know about me. None of our friends do."
"I mean Scott, you can't transform. Allison's being haunted by her dead aunt. And I'm straight up losing my mind."
"Oh Honey, if you only knew the over half of Scott spinning down the drain."
"We can't do this, Scott. We can't.. We can't help Malia. We can't help anyone."
"Well that's oddly negative."
I switched the way I was sitting on the floor. "We can try. We can always try."
In the back of my mind I heard a small sound of growling. "Stay here." I stand from the floor. The sound gets louder as I walk down the hall. I push open a door where the window has been broken in. I saw the back of a coyote on the floor, slowly staking someone behind a set of lockers. I moved as slow as I could to the other side of the lockers, hoping the animal wouldn't smell me.
As I turn to the other side of the lockers Kira backs into me. I turn her around to face me. I place my finger to my lips telling her to be quiet. I placed my hand against the lockers, pushing them down. Three sets of lockers tumble like dominos onto each other. A small growl of a coyote could be heard. I looked over to Stiles' bag which was on the ground, now ripped to show Maila's baby doll from the car wreck.
~
I leaned down to the floor, looking at a set of paw prints when Cait walked in. I blinked a few times to make sure she was real, but she kept walking past me right to where Kira was standing.
"Hi. I'm Caitlin. Most people just call me Cait. You're Kira, right?"
"Uhh yeah."
"Well, I think you might have just saved Scott's life. And being that Scott is one of my best friends. I wanted to repay you. Why don't you come eat lunch with me today. Just the two of us, we can get to know each other a little better."
"Wh-seriously?"
"Yeah. Most of my friend group is actually in huge trouble anyways, so it's kinda me alone right now. Not that I'm not in trouble thanks to your Dad." Kira laughed a bit. "That doesn't matter though. Come on I'm sure it's a lot less stress being out of the locker room." Kira smiles and Follows Cait out of the door.
"You're gonna pass me up, for her?" Fake Cailtin now towered over me.
"I don't even know what you're talking about." I mumble out to the person who wasn't there. I slowly trace my hand over the paw print when Stiles grabs my attention.
"Scott, Ithink I know what she was looking for." Stiles pulls the doll out of his bag.
"Why did you take the doll from the car?"
"Yeah I thought you could use it, you know, for like her scent."
"Where did you get that?" A stressed voice comes from the door. Me and Stiles turn to face Mr. Tate pushing past the cops, "Where did you find this?" He asked, pulling the doll from Stiles' hands. "It belonged to my daughter." He said, his voice becoming low.
"Sorry.' The Sheriff pushed me away from the man, stiles taking a step back on his own. "Mr. Tate, I don't know who you heard about this. If you got your own police scanner or what.. But you can't be here." Mr. Stilinski pushed Mr. Tate back but stopped at a soft clicking noise. The sheriff pulled back Mr. Tate's coat to reveal a gun and holster.
The Tate holds his hands in the air, "I have a permit."
"California schools are gun free zones, permit or no permit. You need to leave, Mr. Tate. Now."
"You find that animal. You find that thing." Mr. Tate yells, stepping out of the room.
I looked over to Stiles. This man wanted to kill his own daughter.
~
I slid my back down my locker after grabbing Cait's jornal. I wanted to- no I need to find out what was happening to Stiles and me. I flipped through the pages skimming every line.
"Hey Scott!" I looked over to my left where Caitlin now was.
"Get out of my head." I mumble turning back to the pages in front of me.
"Ouch, no introduction. I mean how'd you know I wasn't the real Caitlin?"
"Thanks to me not being able to tell the two of you apart. Caitlin is no longer talking to me without other people in the room. So thank you, really." She hums, "And if you're going to be stuck in my head at least be useful."
"I told you, look up what a Kitsuna is."
I sigh turning the pages back to where I was looking the other day. Caitlin started leaning over my shoulder, playing with the pages I passed over. "Stop."
"Is it so bad to have me around?" I closed the book and placed it next to me. "I mean, unlike the real Caitlin. I'll never leave." Fake Caitlin said, straddling me.
"Stop talking to me."
"Hmmm. Would you rather I did this?" She wrapped her arms around my neck, pulling me to her. Fake Caitlin tilted her head so she was closer to my neck. Slowly she starts to kiss up and down my neck, over and over.
"Stop." I breathe out against my better judgment.
"Do you really want me to stop?" She whispered her breath being felt against my neck.
"You're not Caitlin. You're just some image in my head. So stop."
"Scott, who the hell are you talking to." I looked up at Allison walking down the hall. Oh thank god. "I mean, you've been doing that a lot. And you always seem to say Caitlin. Scott what's happening to you?"
"Damn. And the ex interrupts."
"Scott? Does this half to do with dying? I mean are seeing....someone? Not just losing control? And don't give me that bull that you're fine. Not after yesterday, when you straight up told me you thought you were talking to Caitlin." I shift my gaze from the hunter to the fake version of my best friend now sitting next to me. "Oh my god. Are you seeing Caitlin, the same way I'm seeing my aunt?"
"Oh she has no idea does she. And not that you're seeing this facade as you called it, just kinda everything that lead up to this. You know how...intimate, it is?"
"No she doesn't know." I whisper back. I mean unless Cait told anyone, no one knows. And after Stiles little peppering about my shirt, It doesn't seem like anyone did know.
"Scott. Who are you talking to?"
"Caitlin." I whisper my head still looking at the fake version of the doppelganger.
"Scott, no one is there."
"I know." I look up at the Argent girl. "It's like this version of Cait that just excites. It's not like how you described seeing your aunt. I know she's not real. I just can't get rid of her."
"I'm gonna need better detail than that." Allison said sitting on the other side of me.
Caitlin snickered, leaning her head on my shoulder, "Wow, you're telling someone I excites. I feel so loved."
"You know how sometimes, you think you see someone standing there. But as you get closer they seem to get farther. Till they're just gone. Everything around you is normal. That's kinda what psychedelic Caitlin is like. Except, she talks to me. A lot. Thoughts mostly, just kinda bitchy comments. And I know she's not real. But I can't seem to shake her."
"Don't forget the make-outs."
"Is that why you haven't been talking to her? The real Caitlin?"
"I can't tell if she's real."
"So how do you know that this Caitlin you were just talking to was fake?" Cause she was sorta having a very PDA moment.
"The way she talks. But when they're in the same room, I can't tell them apart." Allison just nods as we sit there for a few minutes.
"So now what?"
First Person POV~Caitlin Roads/Holmes
I could barely breathe from laughing so hard. I mean I know Kira was an angel but I didn't know she was this funny. It was weird talking with the girl who likes the same guy as you, but it was nice. Now what was really weird was Malia breaking into the school, and that this whole lunch I haven't seen anyone from the pack.
"Can I ask where all your friends are?" Kira said, making me turn my head to her. "It's just your phone keeps glowing from your bag."
"Uhh, honesty, I'm not sure." I swung my bad around to the front of me, pulling out my phone. 112 missed messages, from two different people. Just Lydia and Allison. "I should call my sister back." I stumble around the corner so Kira wouldn't hear.
"Oh my god. Cait where the hell are you?" Allison's voice came through the phone before I even got to ask about the spam she sent.
"Eating lunch, ally. What's with the spam?"
"Who the hell were you eating with?"
"Kira. Now back to the first question."
"Look, Scott and Stiles think Mr. Tate wants to kill Malia. I need you to meet me and Lydia at my place, then we can head out and save her."
"What am I gonna say to Kira? Not to mention I have detention today."
"Tell Kira it's a family emergency. Just get here." Allison hung up the phone before I could say anything else.
I walked back around the corner. "Hey is everything okay?" Kira asked as I started to pack my bag.
"Uhh, yeah. No. Small family emergency, I just need to go. And please tell your Dad that I will make up the detention up to him, if I can't make it back to school. I'm sorry, Kira." I stopped packing and pulled out a pen, "Give me your arm." Kira holds out her left arm as I scribble my number on her arm, "Call me, so I can make this up to you."
"Uh, sure. I hope everything works out."
I smile at the girl, as I walk down the hall. The two blue doors that lead to the outside world in front of me. I pushed them both open and started to sprint. I didn't bother with the car, Allison's apartment was only a mile away, and I ddi cross country. When I got to the building I was still out of breath though. I messed with the numbers on the elevator pressing floor eight. The small ding that happens when the elevator stops caused me to open my eyes. Allison white front door was now in front of me. I didn't even have a chance to know before Allison opened it pulling me in the apartment by my shirt.
"Allison what the hell!" I scream-ask at her, ripping my shirt from her hands. Lydia stood in the back office with a face of agrement on.
"Lydia can you pass me that black case, behind you." Allison doesn't answer my question just keeps moving around the room looking for an arm gerd. Lydia places the case on the table prompting Allison to open it, pulling out a sniper. She sent a quick texts before turning back to us. "Now what was your question?"
"What's with all of this?" I wave my hands around the room.
"Scott needs me to be his sniper. Though I'm not sure If I can."
"I think what Cait meant was, why are we here too?" Lydia said flipping her hair.
"Scott is hallucinating Cait. It's like he created this whole version of her in his head. Like this version of her that wants to hurt him."
Lydia sighed, "Allison that makes no scene."
"None of this does."
"So this is my fault?" I asked, slightly hurt.
"No. It's- from what he said it's nothing like you. It's like her created your..
"Doppelganger." I finish, trying to keep my voice calme.
"I was gonna say twin. But yeah doppelganger works. Look I just want to make sure he's okay, you know find out why in the world he's seeing his best friend." I might have an idea why.
"Uh, not to break the greatest mystery. But The boys need my help getting the twins, so." Lydia stands from her seat and walks out of the apartment.
I started to pace around in Allison's apartment. Why didn't he tell us? "Allison?"
"Yeah Cait?"
"What did Scott tell you? About, me? This version of me?"
"Not much. But from what I can gather, it's kinda like a pop up, you, it? Storta just appears, starts talking and taunting him. Like a bug in his ear."
My phone buzzes from my pocket. New Message: Unknown ID: Hey it's Kira. Uhh I hope I got the right number, my Dad said he would allow you just a lunch detention if you give the reason why you had to leave school.
I quickly text back a lie. Hey you got the right number, it's Cait. My mom got in a car crash, doctors said she would be fine, but she still hasn't woken up. I think it might just be from the sedative though.
"Who was that from?"
"Kira."
"Does she seem off to you? Like she knows too much?" My god if you knew.
"Her mom used to be a anctinc cultures professor at a collage, Kira picked a lot of it up." Well that was completely made up.
"Hun. Look Isaac on his way over, he's bringing the sedative that we need for my gun."
"Yeah okay."
I walked out of the office, making my way into Allison's room. Her stuff was thrown everywhere. And clothes were all over her unmade bed, but that was normal. What worried me was the black hilt of a knife sticking out from under her pillow. I moved around the piles of school work on the floor and made my way over. I slipped my hand through the ring of the hilt. The steel black blade cutting the underside of Allison's pillow. The small bits of cloth from her pillow case stayed on the end of it. The sound of the elavorter made me jump out of my thoughts. I hastily put the ring dagger back where I found it and meet with Isaac at the front door.
"Cait?"
"Come on." I walked Isaac throughout the house. Allison was still in the back room with the sniper.
Isaac placed a small case on the table. "Do you think you can hone in on Malia?" Allison asked, starting to fill her gun.
"Yeah, because with Scott out of commission, if you can't we're going to be in the woods for a long time." I add passing my hands over the syringes full of sedative Isaac brought.
"I've got a pretty good lock on her scent. It's actually kind of strong." Isaac's eyes flick down to the bottle in his hand.
"What is it?" Allison asked.
"Pee." That was all he said as Allison took the syringe from his hand. The Argent girl went to stick the needle into one of the bottles of sedative but her hand wouldn't stop shaking. "You okay?" Allison doesn't answer, but rather drops the bottle and syringe on the floor.
"Allison?" I run next to the girl as her body starts to shake on the floor. "ALLISON!" She stops moving but her eyes don't open. She stands walking over to the sniper on the counter. Picking it up she pointed at Isaac. "ALLISON!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, lowering the barrel of the gun down to the table.
She opened her eyes, dropping the gun. "I'm..I'm so sorry. I don't know what I was doing. I'm sorry."
Isaac walked away from the door, "Better than ring daggers I guess"
"Who am I supposed to help anyone if I'm like this? What am I supposed to do?"
"Allson." I whispered wrapping my hands around her shaking one, "We'll figure it. We always do."
Isaac takes the bottle of sedative from Allison's hand, "Tell me what to do."
~
Allison parked the car right as Stiles parked his. The three of us climbed out of the car. Without thinking I walked over to Scott. Part of me wanted to yell my head off at him, but now wasn't the time. I shift my gaze over to Stiles, then Allison. "Well don't the three of you just look, dandy."
"Anyone else think we might be doing more harm than good?" Lydia asked, pushing all her hair to one side. Lottie climbed out of the jeep.
"Maybe right now, you would be right. But something tells me in the long run, this is a good thing."
The twins park our car, "We're trying to keep a father from killing his own daughter." Chloe said slamming the drivers door shut.
"Actually Chlo, we're trying to keep a guy from killing a coyote who is actually his daughter, who we don't know how to change from a coyote back to his daughter."
"Hey Ev. Not helpful." I yell to my sister as she rolls her eyes.
Scott turns to Allison, "Did you bring it?" The Argent girl opened one of her car doors, pulling out the loaded sniper. A gun shot from behind Scott and me sets all of us off.
Scott and I jumped onto his bike as the two of us drove off. I could hear Stiles yell something but the bike noise over rode it. A scream ripped through the woods causing Scott to stop.
"Come on!" I yelled as Scott and I started around the woods. "Can you smell her?"
"Not really." Great, the two of us were amesly running around the woods, "Wait." Scott stops causing me to as well, "this way." He points to the left and the two of us turn.
We got closer and close to Malia as she ran. Scott and I cut away so we could cut her off. I could see Maila running to the car wreck. The only way over was to jump. A jump no human could make. "Go." Scott turns full wolf, jumping over the small ravine.
He lands on one leg one keen and one hand. Maila snarls at him, her eyes going blue. I could see Scott take a breath before lifting his head. He roared. The sound was piercing, memories to the night with Peter in the school run past my eyes. The feel of being shaken wasn't here this time. I looked down at my arms, as my veins turned a sliver. I looked back up when Maila cowared at him. Her eyes turned blue, and she fell to her hind legs.
Slowly the fur on her body disappeared. Her body was bare as she lay sprawled on the ground. Scott stood up, turning human. It was as if she didn't know what human was anymore, the way Malia studied herself. (Well she didn't but.)
Scott walked over to her passing his army jacket to her. Slowly I made my way down the revian, making my way over to them. "Cait, your arms." Scott told me as he turned around. I looked back down at my arms, my veins still a sliver color. Taking a breath in and lit a flame on my hand. My veins looked as if they drained into the flame, all the silver turning red feeding the fire. I closed my hand around the fire, my veins becoming normal again.
"Why don't we get you cleaned up?" I say, crouching next to the Tate girl.
"Okay."
