Hallucinating
Chapter One : Hallucinating
"Lottie get your ass up!"
"What Cait. We just got back from ending human sacrifices, can you give it a minute?" She groaned and a groggy voice.
"Nope. Get your ass up."
The ride to school was always the least terrifying part of the day. The worst that could happen was a car crash. Though I still didn't know what to expect when I got there. Scott and I haven't talked since, well you know. Plies Isaac said he's been distant at home as well. It was like they were waiting for the other shoe to drop after drowning themselves for 16 hours.
"Cait!" I turned to see Isaac running towards me.
"Hey."
"Have you seen Scott or Stiles?"
"Not since Saturday, actually I haven't seen nor heard from Scott in over a week. why are they okay?"
"I hope so I can't find them anywhere."
Me and Issac turn around. Scott comes barreling down the cement stairs, like he was running away from something. He wasn't looking at anything though, and no one came after him. It was like he was running from his own shadow. "Scott. Hey. HEY. you all right?" I make my way over to him, placing my hands on his shoulders so he stops running. He takes a step back from me, closing his eyes and holding them shut for a second. When he opens them he just nods. "You don't look all right, Scott."
"I'm okay."
"No you're not." Isaac said moving so he was next to me. "Are you seeing things?"
"How'd you know?"
The sound of soft heels came from behind us, "Because It's happening to Allison too."
"And Stiles." Lottie said joining our little possy, Stiles by her side.
"So it's happening to all three of you." The other shoe just dropped.
First Person POV~Scott McCall
Lydia pushed open the doors of the school, the rest of us trailing behind. "Well, well, look who's no longer the crazy one."
"We are not crazy." Allison corrected her friend.
"Sure you're not. Just like I'm not gonna leave you." Fake Caitlin's perky voice came from next to me. She was just the same as Cait, right down to the silver undertone in her eyes, but she was nothing like her. It was as if... as if she was her doppelganger.
I closed my eyes, holding them there for a second. When I opened them, there was only one Caitlin. And a pretty confused set of other world twins. "Hallucinating? Sleep paralysis? Yeah you guys are fine." Chloe said, rolling her eyes.
"Caity filled us in." Evlynn added holding up her phone.
"Well we did die and come back to life." I try to reason. "It's got to have some side effects, right?"
The bell rang, "Just keep an eye one eachother, okay?" Calitin sighed, giving me a pleading look. "And Lydia stop enjoying this so much."
"This is gonna be a fun day." Caitlin's voice whispered in my ear, but she was already halfway down the hall.
First Person POV~Caitlin Roads/Holmes
First class history. Words were already scribbled on the board, But I wasn't trying to read them. I keep shifting my eyes from Scott to Stiles and back again. Scott couldn't look at me, which was by far the worst part of all of this. Stiles was just going full out crazy, and Allison was living her nightmares. Nothing was right, and it was partially my fault.
"Good morning, everyone. My name is Mr. Yukimura. I'll be taking over for your previous history teacher. My family and I moved her three weeks ago. I'm sure by now you all know my daughter, Kira." I froze at the mention of Kira's name. She was an aganle don't get me wrong, but she was also Scott's next girlfriend, and well, yeah. "Or you might not since she's never actually mentioned anyone from school. Or brought a friend home for that matter." A head slumps onto the table behind me.
Me and everyone else in the class turn to face Kira. "Either way there she is." Kira lifted her head from her desk. There was a ring on her finger that was completely blue with three cherry blossoms on it, and her hair was strone to the side after getting caught on her finger. I gave a small smile and wave before turning back to the front of the room.
"Now lets begin with American History at the turn of the 20th century....." Mr. Yukimura's voice drifted off. Stiles was staring at his book as if the words were floating. He did the same thing Scott does, closing his eyes, holding them and then going back to normal.
Stiles ran straight to his locker at the end of class, Scott close behind him. I went to mine, just across the hall. I knew something was wrong but I still had this pit in my gut, not being able to remember what happens now. "Maybe we just need a little more time to get back to normal." I could hear Scott's voice talking to his best friend.
"Yeah try not to forget we hit the reset button on a supernatural beacon for supernatural creatures. There's a pretty good chance things are never going back to normal." Stiles replied, still trying to get his locker open.
"Yeah." I didn't want to eavesdrop, but it didn't seem like I was part of the conversation any other way. I could just force myself in.
I walked across the hall, Stiles was still trying to open his locker. "Scott or eyes." I said, as soon as he picked his head up from the floor.
"What about them?"
"They're starting the glow." Stiles added, turning to look at Scott.
"Like right now?"
"Yes! Right now. Scott, stop. Stop it." Stiles pestered waving his arms like always.
Scott started to almost hyperventilate. "I can't. I can't control it."
I grabbed his shoulders. "All right just keep your head down. Look down. Come on." I started to gidue him into an empty room, Stiles not far behind.
"Scott just keep your head down and eyes closed." Stiles was muting as we opened the door to a chem classroom.
Scott almost jumped into the classroom. Sugging off his flanne. I mean he was falling into the desks around him. "Get back away from me." Scott struggled out to Stiles and me.
"Scott, it's okay." Stiles said as I started to walk forward.
"I don't know what's going to happen. Bet back." Scott was grasping at the side of a desk. He stumbled back to the front of the room. Curling his hands into fist, blood started to drip to the floor. Scott let out a strangled roar as his body slowly came towards the ground. He started to catch his breath, moving his head up from the ground. Scott's hands were still covered in his own blood.
I leaned down next to him, as he looked over the healing cuts he gave himself. "Pain makes you human."
Stiles came down next to me, "Scott, this isn't just in our heads. This is real, and it's starting to get bad for me too. I'm not just having nightmares. I'm having these dreams where I have to literally scream myself awake. And sometimes I'm not even sure if I'm actually ever waking up."
"What do you mean?" I ask, turning to face Stiles rather than Scott.
"Do you know who you can tell if you're dreaming? You can't read in dreams. More and more the past few days, I've been having trouble reading. It's like I can't see the words. I can't put the letters in order."
"Like even now?" Scott asked, leaning back on a desk.
Stiles stood from the floor, looking at the board in front of us. His head started to spin to posters around the room, "I can't read a thing."
~
I walked back into my room Isaac on my heels. "Right at her head?" I asked again after hearing the story of how Allison almost shot Evlynn with an arrow.
"Almost right through it. And she keeps saying the same thing, that she keeps seeing her aunt. Whatever's happening to the three of them is getting worse.
"It's the same with Scott and Stiles. Well unless they aren't telling me something. Stiles it's the same dreams- he keeps seeing the nemeton. As for Scott, like it he's losing all control. He almost turned in the middle of- Wait what were you even doing there?"
"Ah..."
"Oh my god, you were stocking my sister!"
"No... No, Scott asked me to check in with Allison. See if her side effects were getting better..."
"You're lying. You know who I know you're lying? You're doing that thing where you beans your head to the floor and rub the back of your neck."
"Okay so I may have been there trying to talk to Evlynn. BUt If I hadn't gone, your sister would be dead."
"God I hate when you're right. I'll see you tomorrow Isaac. Tell Scott I said hi."
First Person POV~Scott McCall
I still couldn't think after yesterday. I could almost feel my blood dripping from my hands. The constant scribbling of a pen made my head turn. Stiles was almost in a trace next to me. He keeps writing one word over and over. Wake Up. "Stilinski!" Coach was called from the front of the room. Stiles kept writing. Wake up, skip a line, wake up. We wrote in a pattern until Coach blew his whistle, making me cover my ears.
"Stilinski! I asked you a question?"
Stiles shot up right, "Uh... Sorry Coach. What was it?"
"Oh it was 'Stilinski, are you paying attention back there?"
"Oh. Well, I am now."
"Stilinski, stop reminding me why I drink.. Every night." I tilted my head at the words coving Stiles notebook. I looked up at my friend, honestly scared.
"Scott, I'm okay. I just fell asleep for a second."
"Dude.. you weren't asleep." I shifted my eyes down to the notebook on Stiles desk.
~
Class ended and I didn't even think about anyone else. I was just making my way down the hall. I had to get to my locker. I had to get to Caitlin's journal. It could tell me what was wrong with us. I almost broke the lock on my locker.
"Whow Scott, calm down before you break something." Cait's voice joked from behind me.
"Sorry Cait. I just- I need to know what's wrong with us. You being mystical and otherworldly."
"You bring my journal to school?"
"Yeah." I almost whisper. "Look I know maybe it's cheating, but if I could find out what's wrong with us. Maybe we could prevent a lot of death." I say grabbing the small leather bound book.
I slammed my locker shut, leaning against it. I started flipping through the pages. All had crazy headers like. 'That time Peter tried to kill everyone' or 'The life Story of Mieczyslaw Stilinski : Yes this could either save us or confuse us'
"Caitlin."
"Yeah?"
"Did you write anything about what's happening to us?"
"I think so. Try after the life story of Stiles, just before the life story of me." I do as she says before she stops me, "Wait, there."
I read the word on the top of the page. Kitsunnas. "What the hell is a Kisunna?"
"Scott? Who are you talking to?" I looked up from the jornal, Allison was standing in front of me.
"Wait, Cait."
"Cait? No one's here."
I looked back over to Cait. She was right next to me. 'Sorry not sorry lover boy.' The version of Cait started down the hall before disappearing all together. "Scott?"
"I'm fine. I'll meet you at lunch." I spin around and place the book back in my locker. Allison wouldn't know the truth.
First Person POV~ Caitlin Roads/Holmes
I took a seat on the cold meatal of the lunch table. Isaac was next to me and Scott across. It was weird not eating inside, but people could hear us inside. "Okay, so what happens to a person who has a near-death experience and comes out seeing things?" Scott just jumped into the conversation.
"Or seeing people." Allison muttered under her breath, but It seemed like I was the only one who noticed.
"And is unable to tell what's real or not?" Stiles adds.
"And is being haunted by demonic visions of dead relatives?" Allison finished.
"Great now that we know all of you are checking ticket fair for crazy train. How do any of you know this is real?" Evlynn asked shoving an apple into her mouth.
"I guess we don't." Stiles said with a sigh.
"They're all locked up because they're insane." I slap Isaac's leg after is idck move.
"Ha. Can you at least try to be helpful, please?" Lottie rolled her eyes at me while asking her question. As if to say, 'why do we keep him around?'
"For half my childhood, I was locked in a freezer. So, being helpful is kind of a new thing for me."
"'Kay. Tragic backstories aside, what are we gonna do?"
"Hi." I looked to the other end of the table. Kira stood, with her hair sweep to the side. She had on a simple white tank top with the number 25 on it, and a cute plaid skirt. This is one of those moments where I go 'why did I have to be straight. I mean look at her. Why did I have to like guys?' "Sorry. I couldn't help overhearing what you guys were talking about. And I think I actually might know what you're talking about. There's a Tibetan word for it. It's called 'Bardo' it literally means 'in-between state.' The state between life and death."
"And what do they call you?" Lydia sass biting her lower lip.
"Kira." I say without thinking.
"Yeah she's in our history class." Scott adds, making any smile I had on my face despair.
"Well, Kira. Are you talking bardo in Tibetan Buddhism or Indian?" Lydia pestered on.
"Either, I guess. But all the stuff you guys were just saying? All that happens in Bardo." Kira takes a seat on the other side of Stiles, "There are different progressive states where you can have hallucinations. Some you see, some you hear. And you can be visited by peaceful and wrathful deities."
"Okay not to sound like I don't know anything, but seeing as I don't know anything. Care to explain 'wrathful deities'?" Chloe asked, totally checking Kira out.
"Like demons"
"Demons." Stiles fake perks up, "Why not?"
"Wait hold on. If there are different progressive states then what's the last one?"
"Death. You die." Kira said, a little to none chlont.
A set of images hit me like a brick. Stiles, covering his ears as a faceless creature yells at him. Stiles with duct tape over his mouth.
I force my eyes open, "Kira!" I almost yell her name. "Is one of the stages possession?"
"It could be."
I stand from my seat. Almost starting in a sprint. I could hear Scott coming up behind me, yelling my name. I wouldn't stop moving till it was just the two of us. NO one could over hear us. "Cait. Cait breath." I pant out a few breaths. "Now tell me what you think is happening."
"Stiles. I can't remember all of it. But he gets possessed, and I can't even remember by what."
Scott turns to look back the way we came, "Then we half to keep an eye on him. Okay?"
"Okay."
~
Stiles Scott and I stood in the waiting room for Deaton's clincl. We had explained everything Kira had told us. Leaving my small freak out. "It sounds like your subconscious is trying to communicate with you." Deaton explained to Stiles.
"Well how do I tell my subconscious to use a language that I actually know?"
"Do you remember what the sign language looked like? The placement and the movement of the hands?" Deaton asked as I leaned on the counter.
"You know sign language?" Scott asked his boss almost..proud?
"I know a little." Still better than me. I could teach you the alphabet abd that would be it. "Let me give it a shot."
Stiles raised his hands, "Okay the first one was like this." He placed one finger in the air and touch his other pointer finger to it, then slowly moved the second pointer finger.
"That when." Deaton said reperting the motion.
"Then there was this twice." Stiles flattened his hands pulling his right hand back next to his head.
"That's door."
Stiles makes a first with his right hand leaving out his thumb as he moves it forward from under his chin. "Then there was this in between."
"That's it?"
"Yeah."
"When is a door not a door?"
"When is a door not a door?" Stiles repeated the words.
"When it's ajar." Scott said, his face pointed at the ground.
"Your kidding me? A riddle?" Stiles looked ready to rip down a pipe. "My subconscious wants to tell me a riddle?
"Not necessarily. It could be a warning." I say, shrugging.
"Caitlin's right. When the three of you went under the water, when you crossed from unconsciousness to a kind of superconsciousness.. You essentially opened a door in your minds."
"Okay. What does that mean? The door is still open?" Scott asked.
"Ajar." Deaton corects.
"A door into our minds?" Stiles almost stated.
"I did tell you it was risky."
"So what can they do about it?" I ask, pushing off the counter.
"Well that's difficult to answer."
"No wait a sec. I know that look. That's the 'We know exactly what's wrong with you, but we have no idea how to fix it' look." Stiles said, rolling his hands forward.
"The one thing I do know is that having an opening like that into your mind, it's not good. Each one of you need to close that door. And you need to do it as soon as possible." Deaton finishes.
All three of us walk back outside. The dark air hung over my head. Every part of the comtarble silence was normal. Well when It came to Stiles and Me. As for Scott, I was scared to even look at him the wrong way now. He both made my heart jump and my fingers twitch. My uncomfort was met by the high beams of the Sheriff's car.
"Dad what are you doing here?"
"I'm here because I could use some help. Actually...your help." The Sheriff pointed to Scott.
"Why me?"
"Because eight years ago, almost an entire family died in a car accident. One of the bodies, a young girl named Malia, was never found. There's enough evidence to have me thinking that.. That a werewolf could have caused the accident, and then dragged her body away. If you could somehow get a lock on her scent if you could somehow help me find her body, it might provide the missing clue."
"What if it was a werewolf?" I asked, not sure why a case that closed eight years ago was relevant. Then again, this was Malia, and well, her life is pretty important.
"Well, there's somebody out there who murdered an entire family. Someone who still needs to be caught."
First Person POV~Scott McCall
Cait couldn't help with the plan, seeing as her parents got back in town this weekend. Well her parents from this earth. Which means I know that if I see her she's fake. She has to be. But there was also a part of me that was scared of the fact that maybe, she just didn't want to be around me.
Stiles father was going to distract Mr. Tate. Stiles and me were going to break in the back door, see if I could catch a scent. The two of us stepped over a small rat trap and Stiles picked the lock to the back door. Slowly it creaked open making me think this whole plan would fail.
Stiles started to hand me a bunch of stuffed animals from Malia's bed. None of them could give me a clear scent. "All I'm getting is some animal smell." I tell Stiles as he moves to the side of the room.
"What kind of animal?"
A small growl came next to us, "Dog." Stiles stops moving next to me, facing the dog in the doorway.
"Get rid of it." Stiles whisper yells into my ear.
"Me?"
"Yes, you. Glow your eyes at it, something. Be the Alpha."
"I can't. I don't have control."
"That's pathetic. I mean all powerful true Alpha, and can't even use your ablits." I looked over to the bed where Caitlin was laying.
"You're not real."
"Scott?"
"You heard him Scott, do something, be the alpha." She smirked as I tore my eyes away.
I reached my hand out to the dog. "Nice doggy.." Caitlin laughed but I didn't look over. Stiles and I jumped back when the dog started to bark. A voice came from downstairs yelling for the dog to shut up. Thankfully the dog did. With one quick motion the dog turned and ran the other way.
Stiles passed me a book. "All right, big guy smell it. Prove a use Scott." Caitlin taunts from the bed.
"Scott, you get anything?" Stiles asked, still looking around the room.
"All I'm getting is that dog." I sigh, looking over to fake Caitlin.
"What are you looking at me for. You're the one with the magic nose." I move my attention back to Stiles when I hear him taking a picture.
Stiles and I walk out of the room, fake Caitlin close behind. We meet back up with the Sheriff a few minutes away from the house.
"I'm sorry. I tried as hard as I could. If it wasn't so long ago, I might have been able to do it."
"Or if you weren't so afraid of yourself Scott. What is the point of being an apex predator if you don't do anything about it." Caitlin said, standing on her toes to reach my ear.
"It's okay Scott. It was a long shot." The Sheriff told me sighing. "In fact it was a pretty terrible idea. I think I just ripped a wound open in that poor man. I never should have brought you guys here. I don't know what I was thinking. That's for trying alright?"
"Yeah anytime."
"Ask what your thinking Scott, Stiles isn't gonna stab you. But even if he did you would fine."
I close my eyes at the sound of fake Caitlin's voice, "Don't a lot of cases go unsolved?" I asked, trying to block out the facade of Caitlin.
"Yeah I just think this one he felt like he could've figured out right now."
"Okay Stiles but why is it so important now?"
"Well, he wants to be able to solve one more while he's still Sheriff."
"What do you mean still sheriff?" Caitlin snickers from behind me.
~
My mind was racing as my father tried to tell me his plane to take Stiles' father's badge was helping people. "That doesn't make any sense, Dad! Who are you helping!" I yelled the words despite the fact I meant it as a question. I felt my hands grow warm from the small fist I was making, "JUST get out!"
"Scott..."
"What? I can't believe that you'd do this to my best friend." I heard the door close as my mom walked in the house.
"I'm not doing anything to your friend. I'm doing my job."
"Right he's just taking away every penny of income his family has." Fake Caitlin said from where she was sitting on the counter, "I mean I'd be pretty mad."
"Your job sucks!"
"Some days I can't argue that."
"Three two one..Melissa."
"Can somebody tell me what is going on?" My mom asked from next to us, just when Caitlin said she would.
"He's trying to get Stiles' dad fired." I say trying to calm my tone, knowing if I get two mad I will grow a set of fangs.
"No Melissa that's not true." My Dad was interrupted.
"I'm sorry what are you trying to do?"
My dad looked to the floor, "Conducting a case for impeachment."
"Same thing as trying to get him fired."
"Sounds a lot like getting him fired." My mother shot back.
My father looked up from the floor, "The lack of resolution and ability to close cases is what's going to get him fired. My job is just to collect the information."
A laugh erupted from fake Caitlin as she jumped of the counter, "Imagin if your dad knew what was going on in your head. I mean the red glowing eyes, the fangs, claws....." She came closer so that she was right next to my ear, "Me." It took everything in my power not to swat her away as she placed a kiss behind my ear. I knew it wasn't real. I knew she wasn't real, so why the hell couldn't I get ride of her
My dad turned to look at me, as I tried to catch my breath, "And it's the job my superiors have given me."
"Your job sucks." My mother says, being I'm all too focused on my breath, my lack of control.
"Okay Scott, I know you don't trust me or whatever, but uhh claws. Growing, Left hand."
"Scott.. Sweetheart.. Calm down." I hear my mother's voice as I try to stop the turn. I close my eyes so tight it creates a ringing in my ears. "Scott why don't you come with me."
My mom more pushed me out of the kitchen as my eyes started to glow. She was saying something but I couldn't hear it. I heard the sounds of claws on wood as I grabbed the side of the stairs. "Just breathe just let it go."
"I'm trying." I bit out, the second set of teeth nearly cutting my tongue.
"You told me once that you Stiles and Cait learned a way to control this. You find an anchor, right? Find your anchor."
"My anchor was Allison. I don't have Allison anymore." My teeth press to the top of my mouth as I dig my claws into the skin of my palms.
"Then be your own anchor. You can do this."
A set of images cross my mind. Stiles me and Cait running down the halls of the school trying to get away from Peter. Caitlin in my arms as I pulled back from our kiss. Stiles taking the flair from my hand as I was covered in gasoline. Isaac asking me if he could stay here. Caitlin telling me what a true alpha was. Isaac saying he came back to win. Lydia giving Jackson his key. Allison stopping Kate Argent from killing me. I felt my claws retract from my skin and my teeth go back to normal.
I may not find a way to be my own anchor but I know one thing I could never lose is my pack. They're my anchor.
Slowly I opened my eyes to face my mother. I let out a few pained pants and nodded my head saying I was okay. "Sweetheart, let me tell you something no teenager ever believes, but I swear to you is the absolute truth. You fall in love more than once. It'll happen again. And it'll be just as amazing and extraordinary as the first time. And maybe just as painful. But it will happen again, I promise. And until then...be your own anchor." I watched my mother walk back down the hall.
"Damn I guess I'm your only problem left."
"Shut up Caitlin."
"Wow using my full name. You never do that."
"Shut up."
"Scott, who are you talking to? Is Cait here?" I hear Isaac yell down from upstairs, not wanting to be around the screaming son and his father.
"No! I just got off the phone with her." Fake Caitlin snickers as I tread my way upstairs. Part of my door was still ajar and I needed to get it shut.
