Chapter 55

It had been two weeks, and the guys didn't know how Evan and Craig were even alive.

They didn't even talk anymore, Craig was too busy groaning in constant pain, and Evan was always asleep. But, somehow, they made sense of it.

They wanted to break them, because then they could kill the friends without worrying about them.

If there's no one to save you, then how do you believe in heroes?

-------------

"Ugh, I feel awful." Evan said, his voice hoarse and mostly quiet. "Why can't they just kill us already?" That question was more to himself.

He had found a spot in his cell that made him comfortable, which was the corner farthest away from everyone. It gave him a nice sense of home, which actually was pretty sad, but that's how he felt at home. When he was alone, with the comforting thought of people just a short distance away. People who would help him if he needed them.

It took a few minutes of him being silent and alone with his thoughts, but he drifted off to sleep.

------------

It was night, he could tell, but he was being shoved and held up and ushered into another room, a hand went over his mouth to stop him from screaming, but he didn't want to, until he heard another cell opening.

That's when he began to struggle, going into protective mode, no matter how much it hurt.

He was moving so much, and that's probably what woke everyone up as he tried to wriggle out of their grip.

Evan could've done what most people do in order to get a hand off their mouth for a few seconds, but he was not going to lick their hand. Fucking gross.

"Ev? What's going on?" Craig asked as he too was being ushered out, the humans barely waking up.

Evan tried to speak, but the best he could manage was a muffled voice behind his captor's hand, it really wasn't working out.

This is it, Evan thought to himself in horror, struggling harder, if that was even possible, his breath becoming faster by the minute.

I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die. This is it, this is my moment, I'm gonna die and I'm gonna fail at being a guardian. I'm never gonna get to go home, to patch things up with Jonathan, to explain everything to the guys, to see Chilled, fuck, I kinda miss that fucker. This is it.

He stopped struggling, realizing there was no point, although he did hear some rustling coming from the demon beside him. Craig was still pushing hard.

Behind him, they heard the third cell open, and then there was some shouting, but Evan couldn't focus enough to hear it, another syringe went into his arm, and when he glanced beside him, Craig also had one.

"Pain enhancers." Sutton growled from behind him, so that's who was carrying him. "We're gonna make sure you feel as much pain as possible, don't want you to think we're going soft."

Evan tried to reply with a sarcastic comeback, but his voice was still muffled.

Sutton kicked him, and Evan screamed, although it was muffled, as he tried to double over in pain, Sutton still held him. "Looks like it works." He said in a mock happy voice.

"Let go!" He heard Jonathan scream behind him before all his words became muffled. Evan became alert, they were targeting him first.

"Get your hands off me, you death-fuck freak!" Tyler yelled, catching Craig's attention.

"Shut it, human." The DeathLynch growled, shoving the boy forward.

----

"Guys, what's gonna happen to us?" Marcel asked, looking around at all of his friends, minus Tyler and Jonathan since they were taken to another room.

"Hey, we're gonna be fine. Our parents are probably looking for us right now. It's been two weeks, why wouldn't they?" Brian said, trying to give everyone hope.

"What about Evan and Craig? I mean, they're here to protect us, but what if they can't? Remember what they said? They're the first teenagers ever to be guardians." Lui countered.

"Hey, don't doubt them, they got this far. We haven't been the easiest people to understand, get along with, be friends with in general. They may be the first teenagers, but they had to have been chosen for a reason right? They have something that the others didn't have, that's pretty special." Brock said, standing up, causing the rest of the circle to look up at him.

He continued. "We're gonna make it, okay guys? We know Craig and Evan, they're good people, short-tempered and bitter, yes, but they care. They've been with us for a while, they've done nothing to harm us, they won't let anything happen to us."

"How do you know that? You don't know what the hell they've been injecting them with, what if they're trying to get them to kill us themselves." David said, also standing up.

"Come on, that's ridiculous." Marcel countered.

Suddenly, they were all stood up, arguing and nearing the point of fighting when they heard it.

A single gunshot.

------

"Tyler, look at me, you're gonna be fi-Ow! You fucking shit!" Craig said, glaring at the DeathLynch holding him as he injected him with the pain enhancer again.

"Sorry." He said sarcastically.

Meanwhile, Evan was watching as the other DeathLynch chained Jonathan to a small spot. Once he was secure, the DeathLynch turned around and began to walk away, drawing something shiny from his pocket. A gun.

"Now, who should I get rid of first? You?" He pointed the gun at Tyler. "Or you?" He pointed the gun at Jonathan. Then he laughed, looking at Evan and Craig.

Evan's face was passive, trying to look like he didn't care who died as the creature came towards him. "Who do you think should die, huh Ev? You can choose, after all, you're the special one here. I mean, a real, live hybrid, in the flesh! Almost too rare to kill." He cocked the gun and pressed it against Evan's temple. "Almost."

Again, Evan didn't move. But Craig did, he flinched, surprisingly enough.

The DeathLynch didn't notice, his attention was still focused on the hybrid. "What would they even call you? A demgel? Amon? What are you, huh?" Evan didn't look at him. "Oh, come on." He whined, pressing the gun harder into his head. "Amuse me, why don't you."

"Call me your murderer, because I'm not letting you leave alive." Evan growled, casting a sideways glare at the creature.

"Big talk, looks like you forgot who's tied up here." He now got all up in his face.

"I didn't, the humans are tied up, I'm just being held down by some whore."

"That's not a nice thing to call your boyfriend, oh wait, you don't have one."

"That doesn't bother me."

He laughed, removing the gun and walking a bit away, holding it up and pointing it at Jonathan. "But something does, and that something is knowing you can't save anyone here. Because face it, what can you do?"

The hybrid stayed silent, his darting back and forth between the creature and his friend.

"Looks like I struck a nerve." The creature smiled, slowly aiming for Jonathan's head.

Suddenly, his shirt felt sticky against his stomach, and he involuntarily groaned in pain. Glancing down, he saw a small black handle sticking out. He was stabbed.

"E-Evan." Craig said, eyeing his friend with fear as he saw blood drip down from his wound, and his body began to sway in Sutton's arms.

"I'm fine." Evan's voice was unintentionally weak, and his breath was fast and heavy. In an instant Evan felt pain rip through the wound even more powerful than before, he screamed, screwing his eyes shut. But not before he saw Sutton wave the bloody knife right in his face.

"Literally." The creature joked, satisfied as he saw Evan's body begin to slump and go weak.

Pain filled all his senses because of the enhancers, so Evan couldn't hear the punchline, and he could barely see as Craig was stabbed as well, except he slumped over faster.

"Craig, don't, you're stronger." He couldn't hear himself, for all he knew it could have been a jumble of words, but he fought it.

He was given a mission, and he had to complete it. Craig was down, but he wasn't, not yet.

Objective: Save the humans. Status: In progress.

Tyler and Jonathan had begun to cry, tears flowing down their face as they saw their saviors deteriorate right in front of them.

"Evan, whatever happens, I want you to know I'm so sorry, I mean that, I'm sorry! For everything! For cheating on you, for giving you attitude, for lying to you, I'm sorry. And this may sound selfish, but please, don't let me die. I....I love you." His voice shook, tears flowed down his cheeks like a waterfall, hugging his face until it hit underneath his chin, where it fell and hit the ground.

Evan's body fell limp in Sutton's arms, his shoulders hunched together and blood still dripping from the wound in his stomach.

A few seconds later, the loudest sound he had ever heard rang through his ears, echoing against his skull. It was a gunshot.

Everything happened so fast.
