Chapter 40
OMG WE ARE ALMOST AT 20K READS I LOVE YOU GUYS
--------------------------------
"Hey Ev, I never asked, what did you see when you looked through the illuminati looking thing back at the house?" Craig asked as he sat next to Evan at their kitchen island as they ate their spicy chicken sandwiches.
Evan visibly shivered at the thought. "A DeathLynch." His voice was low and serious, not so much as a hint of a joke in his voice, it was the voice he used when he wanted to leave a party.
Craig choked on his food. "No way, you didn't! You're joking! Oh god, you're not joking, oh my god...." He panicked as Evan stared at the marble surface of the island counter.
"Yeah, that's why I freaked out, not only that, but it was ripping....ripping J-Jonathan's head off." Evan shivered once again, shutting his eyes and trying to block out the memory.
Craig immediately understood why Evan had been so distraught. "Oh my god, I feel like such an asshole for asking, Ev, I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry." Without hesitating, he pulled the other demon into a hug, and surprisingly, Evan didn't pull away.
"Yeah, I certainly learned my lesson about Ouija boards. But, you felt something, right? At the house, you felt it right? Like something more than a ghost was there, more than another demon, you felt that, right?" Evan said, finally voicing all the worries and thoughts he had about the haunted house they had gone to.
Craig pulled away, his eyes wide. "You felt that too?! I thought it was just me! It definitely felt like something was there! What do you think that was?"
"I think maybe there was a DeathLynch there, dude, like a really weak one or something, it's not a coincidence that the board picked me and showed the thing to me, right?"
"Yeah, there's no way, it's gotta mean something, but what?"
They sat in silence for a few minutes, until a theory popped into Evan's head.
"I think it's what we're up against, why we were chosen."
Craig was confused. "What do you mean, Ev?"
Evan looked Craig dead in the eye. "I think we were chosen to protect them from a DeathLynch."
----------
It was later in the day, and Evan and Craig were just lounging around the house, not really doing anything until Evan yawned out of the blue.
"Dude, I just got super tired, I think I'm gonna go take a nap or lie down or something." Evan said, heading towards the stairs.
"That's weird, you sure you're okay?" Craig asked, standing up just in case.
"Yeah, I'm sure I'm fine, I'm just gonna take a nap, okay?"
"Alright, Ev. Night."
"Night."
Craig sat back down as Evan left the room and headed towards the stairs, coughing a few times. He didn't think anything was wrong until he heard a thud come from the foyer and Evan's footsteps stopped.
"Ev? Evan!" Craig said, standing and walking towards the foyer. He had barely gotten to the first stair when he saw Evan, passed out on the middle steps. "Evan!"
He hurried up, getting flashbacks from when Evan had injured himself with the upstairs mirror.
He's breathing, Craig thought as he let out a breath. It's slow and shallow, but he's breathing. He'll be fine, just gotta get him to his room.
Carefully, Craig draped one of Evan's arms over his shoulder, put one of his own hands on his waist and slowly took his friend to his room.
Once he had gotten Evan into his bed, he allowed himself to freak out.
"What the hell is wrong with him? What do I tell the others? What the fuck do I do?" He shouted at himself, frantically tugging at his hair, ignoring any pain he felt.
Relax, he told himself, taking a deep breath, you can't be helpful if you're freaking out, just wait until he wakes up to decide what to do next.
Still taking deep breaths, he left the room, closing the door behind him as he went across the hall to his own room.
----------------
The next morning, Evan woke up and immediately ran to the bathroom, kneeling over the toilet as he threw up.
After a few minutes of him vomiting, Craig walked in and sat next to him, rubbing his back. "I got you, bro. Just let it out."
Finally, after about fifteen minutes, Evan finally leaned back with a groan. "I don't feel good, Craig."
"I can tell." Craig replied, unknowingly using a sarcastic tone.
Evan glared at him. "I'm serious, my head is killing me and I feel like if I move I'm going to die." He closed his eyes, laying back so that he was on the floor.
Craig looked at him sympathetically. "I know, buddy, but come on, we got to get you back to your bed, I don't want to be late for school."
Evan groaned once more. "Fine, but can you please convince Jonathan that I'm not sick because of that damn Ouija Board. Ow, headrush." He said as Craig helped him stand.
Slowly, they got Evan back into bed, where he fell back asleep almost immediately.
"I'll check on you later, Ev." Craig said as he turned off the demon's light and shut his door.
Before getting ready for school, though, Craig walked into the bathroom and cleaned up, flushing the toilet and using a towel to wipe the floor before tossing it into the trash.
--------
Fifteen minutes later Craig was out the door and on his way to meet up with his friends. While he was walking all he could think about was Evan.
He never gets sick, I really hope he's okay, maybe I'll get him something later to cheer him up.
"Yo Craig!" Tyler said, giving him a high-five before looking around. "Where's Evan?"
"He was really sick this morning, he was throwing up and I left him sleeping." Craig explained, then addressed his friend's accusing looks. "This isn't like last time, guys, I swear, he's actually sick now."
The guys, after staring at Craig for a few seconds, shrugged and started to walk.
"Alright, we believe you, for now." David said, glancing over his shoulder as he spoke.
Jonathan caught up with a group a bit down the road, dark circles underneath his eyes while he yawned. "Hey guys."
"Dude, what bus ran you over?" Craig asked jokingly.
"Do I look that bad? I didn't get much sleep last night." He said, rubbing his eyes. "Hey, where's Evan?"
"Sleeping, he's really sick." Craig answered, analyzing Jonathan's appearance, something was off about him, and it wasn't just the sleep deprivation apparent on his face.
Jonathan opened his mouth to speak, but Craig beat him to it. "It wasn't the damn board."
"I wasn't going to say that! I was just gonna ask for your key so I could take care of him! What kind of boyfriend do you think I am?" Jonathan exclaimed, holding out his hand for the key.
Craig fished the lanyard that held his keys out of his bag, his eyes never leaving Jonathan. "I don't think you want the answer to that question." He said, placing the keys in his hand as he continued to walk to school.
