Chapter 23
After a hasty round of hand washing, the group rushed into the theater hall to find it empty. Panicked, they rushed outside just in time to witness Craig punch Evan in the jaw, hard.
Evan stumbled back, holding his jaw as he let out a groan of pain.
"You never listen, do you? We have been over this, Ev." Craig growled just as their friends rushed over, Jonathan taking care of Evan while Tyler convinced everyone to help hold Craig back.
"What the hell happened? How long were we gone?" Tyler asked as the two were separated.
"Thirty seven minutes. Ow." Evan said, wincing as he spoke because of the pain in his jaw. Craig still struggled a bit against his friends, but was calming down as he saw he had really hurt Evan.
"You deserved it." He said, in a tone that implied that the two would finish their argument later, when no one else was around.
Evan opened his mouth to reply, but closed it when Jonathan said, "Stop! Don't talk! You'll hurt your jaw more, here, press the cup against it gently, it still has a bit of ice so it's cold enough." Pressing the movie theater cup lightly against his jaw, Jonathan made sure Evan's mouth stayed shut, even if he was dying to make some snarky remark.
Tyler took charge. "Alright, why don't we all just go get some food to cool off? We can get some ice for Evan and you two can stop glaring at each other like one of you is going to rip the other's throat out, sound good?"
The demons grunted what sounded like agreement, so that's how Tyler took it as he started walking off in some random direction, everyone else following behind. They kept Craig and Evan away from each other, learning their lesson about when they were this angry at each other.
They didn't eat, 'they' meaning Evan and Craig, and not just because of Evan's injured jaw, the demons were still being cautious about human food. Although Evan did manage to down a few fries that Jonathan forced at him, refusing to take no for an answer.
The guys insisted on walking the two home, despite their countless protests, they didn't want them to see their house, the thought scared them. But they didn't have a choice.
They were awestruck, it seemed, as the group of boys stared at the house, the limo parked in the driveway, but Sebastian was currently back in Hell.
Evan went inside without a single word, not even a goodbye, Jonathan said that he was tired, but not even he was buying that. A few minutes later, Craig went inside as well. The guys waited for a few seconds to make sure that there was no yelling, but all they saw was two lights on upstairs, presumably their bedroom, so they left.
-------------------------
Monday morning. 7 AM. The two demons were waiting for the guys to arrive at their usual meeting spot. They did not want to walk to school together alone. They had barely survived the trek to that spot.
"You're still wrong." Evan said under breath, his arms crossed as he kept a lookout for his friends.
"No, you are. I told you, we have to follow the rules." Craig hissed.
"Oh, so just because you said it means I have to follow? I told you, Craig, this isn't home, you can't tell me what to do." Evan growled, turning to face his brother.
"I know it's not home, but that doesn't make a difference. Mom said I'm in charge, so you listen to me. No. Matter. What." His dark emerald eyes burned with anger.
Evan took a step closer, getting right in his face, forgetting to keep watch for their friends as he said, "That bitch is not my mom, and she never will be. I may have lived with her for years, but she doesn't tell me what to do, especially not here, so neither do you."
"Yeah, well you know what, Ev? Your mom is dead, so you have no right to shit on mine. And honestly, do you think that even if she wasn't, she'd love you anymore than mine does? Do you? Because here's a hint, Ev. She wouldn't. So stop trying to imagine some perfect little fantasy in that fucked up head of yours, because it will never, and I mean never happen." Venom drenched Craig's words, their faces just a few centimeters apart.
Evan could see their friends a few feet away, scared looks on their face. He turned his head back towards Craig, letting the words sink in as a few tears jumped to his eyes. Blinking rapidly, he used all of his anger and put it into his next words. "Fuck. You."
He stormed off, pushing past his friends, even Jonathan, not waiting to walk with them.
"Ev?" Jonathan said cautiously, scared of his friend.
"Leave me alone!" Evan shouted back, his voice cracking halfway through, he quickly wiped his eyes with his sleeve as he left their field of vision.
A small part of Craig felt bad, because he shouldn't have brought Evan's parents into this, he knew what kind of relationship he had with them, but Evan had gone off on his mom, so he found it fair. But still, he hadn't seen tears in his friend's eyes for years, not since they were eight years old and he was just barely moving in. It hurt him to know that he had not just made Evan angry, but he had also brought a whole lot of feelings that he shouldn't have messed with.
Still, he kept a stern, angry face as he turned to his friends. "He's such a pain in the ass." He growled under his breath, although he wasn't sure he believed those words, although it sounded like he did.
Scared to say the wrong thing, although Jonathan had quite a few cross things to say to Craig, the guys followed behind him as he led the way to school.
Today was going to be something.
