Running a hand through his hair in an attempt to make it look like he had not just woken up, Evan shoved his phone into his backpack and hoisted it over his shoulder. He opened his door, leaving it open as he made his way to the stairs, smirking at himself as he passed the hallway mirror, making one last attempt at fixing his unkempt hair.
It was Saturday, a few days after Evan had went to the hospital and he was itching for adventure. The past few weeks he had been there all he had done was get to know his new friends, spent a day in the hospital, and had his friends worry about him, but today was finally a free day, his free day. And he was going to explore.
Skipping the last step on the stairway, Evan walked into the kitchen, grabbing a can of soda out of the fridge despite the time being 7:45 in the morning.
Pushing the front door open, closing it behind him quietly so he wouldn't wake Craig, he started walking down the sidewalk, opening the soda and taking a sip.
A few blocks later, Evan shoved his empty soda can into someone's recycling bin as he continued on his journey, shoving his hands into the pockets of his hoodie. His eyes explored the scenery around him, drinking in every detail he could as he walked past large, beige colored houses much like his own.
About an hour later, he heard his phone ringing in his bag, playing the default ringtone he hadn't bothered to change. Assuming it was Craig, he ignored it and continued on, coming up on a park where several parents were sat at benches watching their children play. Empty strollers sat beside a few of them, indicating the children who had once sat in there were now running around on the bright green grass while their parents conversed with each other.
Evan found himself smiling as he passed the park and finally ended up in a busier part of town, cars raced up and down the street, business lined the roads and pedestrians hurriedly walked down the sidewalk, some speaking rapidly into their phone while others walked briskly with shopping bags swaying at their sides.
He crossed the street, finding himself in the middle of a large mass of people, carefully avoiding any contact with them. On the other side of the road, Evan once again observed his surroundings, there was a small, locally owned bookstore a few shops down from him, and a busy cafe in front of him, the smell of human food poisoning the air within his vicinity.
For some reason, Evan felt drawn to the bookstore, and it wasn't because of some fancy window display or a shiny new paint job-in fact, the building's green paint was actually starting to chip and on display there were only a few classic titles and the Harry Potter books-but nonetheless he entered. At once he was hit with the waft of new and old books, the store wasn't crazy busy but it wasn't completely empty either.
He wandered down the different aisles, ignoring the history and math books as he found himself in the fiction aisle, which happened to be on the other side of the comic books. His eyes searched the shelves for nothing in particular, he had never thought of himself as a reader, he barely owned a few books and they were only about color theory and other drawing related things that he hardly ever used, but he wasn't opposed to the idea of reading a book.
In the end, Evan walked out with two books-The Book Thief and The Memory of Light- as well as a few comics that caught his interest. He carefully put the plastic bag of books into his backpack, making sure to grab out his phone and instead put it in his front pocket.
Once he had pulled the backpack on once again, he set off down the street once more, eagerly gazing at the windows of various different stores, but none of them caught his interest in the slightest.
Finally, he had reached the end of the block, and he was now at a crosswalk which had a red light. He waited patiently along with a small crowd, and the light had just turned green when Evan got the sudden urge to turn around.
So he did, he turned his head and immediately his eyes widened as he pictured a man getting hit by a motorcycle running the red light at full speed. Without thinking, Evan pushed his way past a few people and made his way toward the man who was about to cross, the light had just turned green and Evan could hear the motorcycles engine roaring in his ears.
He spotted the motorcycle out of the corner of his eye as he gripped both of the man's arms from behind, pulling him back just in time as the motorcycle drove past, creating a crunching sound as it ran over the man's phone, which he had probably dropped when Evan pulled him.
Evan, suddenly afraid that the man would be angry about the phone, let go ad the man turned around, astonishment in his eyes.
"You...you just saved my life...you." The man was stuttering, and Evan thought he was about to thank him when two men in black suits rushed over, checking the man up and down.
"Sir, are you alright?" One of them asked, his voice deep and concerned as the other picked up the remains of his phone.
"I'm sorry about your phone." Evan said, noticing that the man's eyes had never left him.
"Oh boys, I'm fine! Thanks to this young man here," He pointed at Evan before adding to him, "don't worry about the phone, I can always get a new one. But thank you so much for saving me, how can I ever repay you?"
Evan was flustered, a crowd had gathered and their attention was focused on Evan and the three men in front of him, one of which he had just saved from getting hit by a motorcycle.
"No, it's fine, you don't have to. Helping people is just what I do." His voice wavered as his eyes darted around himself nervously at the sudden attention he was getting.
One of the men in suits spoke up, looking Evan directly in the eye. "Kid, you just saved the mayor, you must be repaid."
Evan had never wanted to get hit by a motorcycle so badly.
