Vision
It had been a few months after the incident in Hong Kong and the five were adjusting to living in Britain with Richard and Lohan as well as receiving visits from Alicia and Danny. They were living with people who cared about them, treated them with kindness, and who made them feel normal. They never really received any news about the Old Ones or Nightrise that needed their attention so it peacefully most of the time, which is why they were confused when they received a call from The Nexus that there was suspicious activity happening in Alaska that involving Nightrise and the five needed to investigate.
"But the Old ones and Nightrise have been silent for months, now all of a sudden they're acting suspicious," Richard responded, being the one who's holding the phone.
"Yes, I agree with you that this is sudden but it's much better than being clueless about what they're planning." Ms. Ashwood responded. "We have your flight schedule for tomorrow at 10 am and we've arranged someone to take you to a lodge we've reserved for you, so I suggest you start packing and bring plenty of warm clothing."
"Obviously." Scott retorted.
"Anything else Ms. Ashwood?" Matt asked.
"That is all, I hope to hear from you again once you return from your journey."
"Alright, goodbye Ms. Ashwood, have a good day."
"I wish you all luck." She said as she hung up the phone.
"Alaska, she can't be serious." Scarlett retorted.
"Ms. Ashwood isn't the type to joke about the Old ones and if Nightrise is doing something in Alaska then we better check," Matt explained as he got up from his seat.
"Alright, everyone start packing and Pedro I better not see shorts in your suitcase instead of pants." Richard spoke as he looked at Pedro who was known for wearing shorts most of the time.
"Damn it." Pedro muttered.
"I agree, Alaska isn't exactly the warmest place." Lohan chimed in
Everyone went to their room to start packing, later in the evening while Richard was packing there was a knock on his bedroom door, he opened it to reveal Matt standing outside his door with a worried look.
"What is it Matt, have you finished packing?" He asked.
"Almost, I wanted to tell you that I had a vision earlier, about the trip." One of Matt's powers was being able to see the future in either his dreams or daydreams, a power that proved useful when his late aunt Gwenda tried to kill him and he was able to save his school from death and destruction.
"What did you see?"
"All I saw was a bunch of snow and someone walking towards me, they looked like a shadow, I couldn't see their face." There was worry in Matt's voice. "What if something bad happens while we're there?"
"There's nothing to worry about Matt, and I promise, if any of you are in trouble I'll be there to help," Richard reassured him as he put a hand on Matt's shoulder. "But then again I'm not the ones with powers."
"Thanks, Richard."
"Now go finish packing, we have to wake up early tomorrow so we don't miss our flight."
"Alright, I'll tell you if I see anything else in my vision." Matt responded as he left Richard's room feeling less worried about the trip.
Although the feeling that something bad was going to happen still dawned on him.
The Next Day
Before they knew, the five and the two adults were on a plane to Alaska, everyone was talking amongst each other everyone but Matt that is. He was feeling a sense a dreariness, while on their way to the airport, Matt had another vision, it was the same setting and the same person but this time they were holding a knife and were about to hit him but he snapped out of the vision to see Richard shaking him that they arrived.
"Matt is everything okay?" Richard asked as he shook the boy's shoulder.
"I'm okay, it's just my vision from yesterday has been bugging me." Matt then lowered his voice to a whisper. "I think someone is gonna try and kill us."
"Why, what did you see?" He asked with worry on his face.
"I think it's best I tell you when we land, I don't want people to hear."
Matt was right, there were too many people around them so the possibility of anyone listening to their conversation even if they were whispering was a chance they couldn't risk.
The five ended up falling asleep during the plane ride and woke up to find themselves in the dream world.
"How long until we get there?" Scarlett asked, Scarlett was a pretty active person and tends to get restless when having to sit still for a long time.
"Well, the flights around 19 hours so I'd say 6 more hours, give or take." Matt responded.
"If that's the case then I'm finding another place to go." Scott retorted as he started walking away.
"Scott hold on, I want to tell you all to stay close if we ever split up." Matt spoke
"Why?"
"I had a vision that someone was coming towards me with a knife, I didn't see their face so be cautious of anyone working with
Nightrise."
After a while of talking Matt felt someone shaking shoulder which ended up waking him up to see the journalist telling them that they arrived. They got off the plane, grab their luggage, and saw a woman with brunette hair and a sign that read their false names.
"You must be the five, my name is Vanessa, welcome to Alaska." The woman smiled. "I'm a friend of Nathalie's and she's asked me to keep an eye on you until she gets here."
"Nathalie's coming here?" Jamie asked.
"Yes, she plans on meeting with you all."
They got in the car, waiting to get to their destination until Jamie asked "Do you know what's going on with Nightrise?"
"Not completely, from what I heard Nightrise is here in Alaska only because they want to expand their company, what makes it odd though is the fact that while their company is around here they also have another building that's isolated from the rest of the town."
'That's where we're going.' Matt though.
Time skip
Once they arrived at the lodge Vanessa told them that she would check in on them every day in the afternoon and that if they ever needed anything they should just call her, she soon left after that.
"Alright, I suggest that today we get some rest and tomorrow we can take a look at what Nightrise is doing," Richard spoke as he sat down.
"Are you kidding me, I've been stuck in a tin can with wings for the last 19 hours plus a car trip that lasted 30 minutes, I'm going outside in the snow thank you very much." Scarlett hissed out as she ran outside.
"Yeah I'm kinda restless as well, I'm going with Scarlett." Pedro spoke as he followed Scarlett out the door.
"Alright Alright, anyone who still has energy can go outside, I'll be taking a nap." Richard yawned, he then turned to Lohan who didn't look tired at all. "Make sure they don't kill each other."
"You have my word."
The five actually enjoyed playing in the snow, throwing snowballs at each other, building a snowman, it was a good distraction from the actual reason they were there. They were in the middle of a snowball when suddenly Matt started seeing things, he saw the familiar shadow walking towards with the same knife, only this time they were walking towards him much faster.
He started breathing heavily. "No no no, stay away stay away!"
"Matt? Matt, what's wrong?" Jamie asked as he walked toward him slowly, unfortunately, Matt didn't hear him as the figure got closer.
"Stay away!" He yelled as he was backing away, the figure had a sinister white smile.
"Matt snap out of it!" Scarlett shouted as she got in front of him.
"STAY AWAY!" He shouted as he pushed Scarlett to the side, making her fall down, he was shaking, he would have attacked if it weren't for Lohan grabbing his arm and holding it behind his back.
"Matthew, stop it." Lohan spoke with a calm yet intimidating tone.
It took a while for Matt to calm down and realize that there was no dark figure, his breathing was back to normal and he wasn't shaking anymore.
Lohan let go of Matt's arm "I think it's best if you stay inside and rest, we don't need anyone getting hurt."
"Good idea, sorry if I hurt any of you." Matt apologized as he went inside to rest, feeling awful that he let himself lose control.
Fear started to fill his mind, the whole reason why they were there was to find out what Nightrise was doing and put a stop to that but it seems to Matt that if he doesn't get it together then he might put them in danger.
The Next day
Morning came, Matt still felt guilty about yesterday and he only felt more guilty when Richard came to his room.
"So Lohan told me what happened yesterday," Richard spoke as he stood by the door.
"I'm sorry okay, I had the vision again, I freaked out, and I ended up having a minor panic attack!" Matt apologized, trying to explain his predicament.
"I understand Matt and I didn't come here to scold you, I wanted to ask what you saw."
"I saw the same dark figure but they were smiling in an evil way and they were getting closer by the second, it felt so real, so when Scarlett got in front of me I was worried that she'd get hurt so I pushed her to the side."
"Yeah, Lohan told me that as well, it's a good thing she knows when you're having a panic attack or she would have pummeled you with snow."
Matt laughed a bit but he still felt guilty "Yeah...she would."
"Matt, you had a panic attack, we know you wouldn't attack us for no reason." Richard comfort the boy as he ruffled the boy's hair. "Anyways, get ready, we're going out for breakfast then we're going to figure out what to do about Nightrise."
Richard left the room so Matt could get ready, Matt's was a bit surprised by Richard's reaction even though he's been with the journalist for about a year now. If he ever did something like that in front of Gwenda or Brian then he can expect to have fresh bruises the next day or if he pushed Kelvin like he did to Scarlett then he would expect Kelvin to threaten him. The thing is, the five aren't Kelvin, they're not like the boys from Forest Hill, and Richard was like Gwenda or Brian, neither was Lohan.
He needed to remind himself that he's with people that don't hurt him for every little mistake he does.
Matt got ready and went downstairs to see that everyone was already waiting for him, They left the lodge and saw Vanessa with the car. They made it to a restaurant that served breakfast, they ordered their food and started discussing their plan to figure out what Nightrise was doing.
"Vanessa, What can you tell us about Nightrise's security on the building out in the snow."
"It's heavily guarded, reporters and journalists try to get near it but the guards there would always point their weapons at them and say they don't do interviews," Vanessa explained as she sipped her coffee. "The only way you'll ever get in is if you had the power of invisibility or an army, I'm going to assume none of you have either."
"Sadly, no," Jamie responded. "If security is like how described it then how are we going to get in, Scott and I can only control one person at a time, plus we don't know if we can even use our powers."
"Good point Jamie, Nightrise isn't that stupid, they know we would eventually find out what they were doing and try to make it impossible for us." Matt agreed. "What we need is a distraction, something to distract them long enough for us to get in and to make the guards leave their post."
"A little problem with your plan Matthew, Nightrise already knows what we look like, so even if one or two of us were the distraction there's no way they'd let us leave."
"Maybe it doesn't have to involve us." Scarlett spoke.
"What?"
"Maybe I can make a snow blizzard, it would distract them and maybe even knock some of the guards off their post, that could give us time to sneak in."
"Thing is, we also need a good look at the building's layout, see if there's any way in beside the front." Richard pointed out.
"I have a colleague who is here in Alaska if you want I can ask him to investigate the building's layout and see if there's another way in." Lohan spoke.
"That's perfect, how long do you think it will take for him to give us the information?" Scarlett chimed in.
"Depends, I need to call him and give him the address of the building."
Vanessa took out a pen and a piece of paper from her purse and started writing something on it. "Here's the address, I'm sure your friend can find it."
"Wait, if it's out in the snow, how are we going to get there." Richard asked.
"Leave that to me." Vanessa smiled confidently.
After breakfast they decided to look around the town, it was a rather lovely place, there were a lot of buildings in the area and there was an abundance of interesting locations for people to visit. Coffee shops, clothing stores, offices, parks, was rather lovely especially with the lights and snow around the area.
"What can you tell us about yourself, Vanessa, how do you know Nathalie?" Richard asked the brunette.
"Well I'm 28 years old, I was born here in this part of Alaska, I work as the mayor's assistant, and I met Nathalie when she came to Alaska for high school, I found out about the five through her actually."
"Do you like Alaska?" Scarlett asked
"Yes actually, the cold I could do without but aside from that I like it."
While the others were talking, Matt was looking out the window, he didn't get much sleep last night because of the guilt he was feeling so exhaustion was getting to him, he closed his eyes for a bit only to open them again to see that he was in the dream world. He noticed the library and decided that maybe he would pay a visit to the librarian to see if he could get some answers, he met the librarian a few months back when they find out about Scarlett, apparently the books in the library are records of people's life, from birth to death the book tells the reader everything about the person's life. The librarian suggested that Matt read his book but he refused, since they're meeting he's always been wary of the librarian. Matt goes inside to see the array of books, he walks around for a while to find the old man and even calls out his name but no response, he walks into a room and sees a table with a book on it, he goes near it and grabs it.
"Curiosity is an interesting trait, Matthew." The librarian greeted him.
"AH!" Matt yelps due to the sudden appearance. "Bloody hell mate you almost scared me half to death."
"My apologies, I didn't mean to frighten you." He responded, the librarian was holding a couple of books, some were rather big while some of them were rather thin. "I'm assuming you're here for a reason."
"Yes actually, I was wondering if you could help me with a vision I've been having recently."
"You've been seeing visions of a shadow coming towards you."
"Yes, in the past I had a vision of my aunt Gwenda blowing up the school but I was able to stop it from happening so I was wondering if there is a way I can change fate like I did back in Forest Hill?"
"Matthew, I'm sorry to say this but you cannot change this.."
"W-What?" Matt shouted, worry appearing on his face. "What do mean I can't change this, that's impossible!"
"I only speak the truth, Matthew."
Matt felt sick after learning this, was he actually going to die? and was there really nothing he could do about?
"I'm going outside, I don't want to hear any more of this." Matt was about to walk out until the Librarian spoke.
"By the way Matthew, I suggest you all prepare for the worst."
"I don't need you to tell me twice." Matt responded with despair in his voice, he soon left the library, preparing to wake up.
The Librarian put down the books he was holding on the table then grabbed the one at the top, it wasn't as thick or thin as the other books, it was in between, representing that while the person lived long, their life was coming to an end soon.
"They truly are willing to do anything to protect you."
Looks like someone isn't coming out of this alive.
