Chapter 3: The Battle
Aerlinniel's POV
"You could have picked a better spot," Gimli complains.
We are waiting for the Orcs to come. They are almost here, I can hear their heartbeats and their marching feet in the distance. I am standing next to Legolas and Gimli is on the other side of him. Aragorn walks over to us.
"Well, lad." Gimli says to Aragorn, "Whatever luck you live by, let's hope it lasts the night."
"Your friends are with you Aragorn," Legolas tells him.
"Let's hope they last the night," Gimli adds.
Aragorn walks away and starts to shout orders to the Elves.
"What's happening out there?" Gimli asks frustrated.
"Shall I describe it to you? Or would you like me to find you a box?" Legolas question. Gimli laughs and I smile. Legolas can be so funny. It is one of the reasons I love him so much. He can make me smile even when I am feeling sad.
After a while, the Orcs make it to the front of Helm's Deep. I then hear an Arrow shoot out and an Orc groan and fall over.
"Dartho! (Hold!)" Aragorn shouts. Then the Orcs shout and they all start to advance.
"Tangado a chadad! (Prepare to fire!)" Aragorn again shouts.
"Faeg i-varv dun na lanc a nu ranc. (Their armour is weak at the neck and beneath the arm.)" Legolas informs us.
Then Aragorn commands, "Leithio i philinn! (Release the arrows)"
I hear many arrows fly through the air and hit the Orcs.
"Did they hit anything?" Gimli asks, but does not get an answer. Gimli starts to get impatient and doesn't want to have to wait to fight. "Send them to me! Come on!"
"Pendraith! (Ladders!)" Aragorn warns.
"Good!" Gimli exclaims.
"Swords! Swords!" Aragorn commands and I pull out my sword.
"Aerlinniel," Legolas says my name.
"Yes, Legolas?"
He pauses a moment before saying, "Be careful. Please."
"I will, I promise," I promise him and quickly kiss his cheek. "You be careful too."
I hear the Orcs are getting close and swing my sword at one of them. Then fighting two more almost immediately after I had killed the first one.
"Legolas! Two already!" Gimli shouts.
Legolas then tells him, "I'm on 17!"
"I'll have no pointy-ear outscoring me!" Gimli scoffs.
"Nineteen!" Legolas shouts as I kill another Orc.
~~~
I have been fighting for a while. I have strayed away from Legolas, Gimli, and Aragorn. I can still hear their heartbeats, so I know that they are still alive. I listen to hear who is close by me and find that Haldir is not too far away. But, he is surrounded by Orcs, so I go over to help him. I kill two Orcs and Haldir quickly thanks me. I decide to stay by him since I am not near the others.
Legolas POV
"The fortress is taken. It is over." King Theoden states sadly.
We are waiting in a room behind a door that the Uruk-hai are trying to get through. Aragorn and I are barricading the door.
"You said this fortress would never fall while your men defend it. They still defend it. They have died defending it." Aragorn reminds him then asks, "Is there no other way for the women and children to get out of the caves? Is there no other way?"
Someone answers for him, "There is one passage. It leads into the mountains. But they will not get far. The Uruk-hai are too many."
"Tell the women and children to make for the mountain pass. And barricade the entrance!" Aragorn commands him.
"So much death." King Theoden all of the sudden says and then asks, "What can Men do against such reckless hate?"
"Ride out with me. Ride out and meet them." Aragorn offers.
"For death and glory."
"For Rohan. For your people." Aragorn adds.
Gimli then states, "The sun is rising."
"Yes...Yes... The horn of Helm Hammerhand...shall sound in the Deep...one last time." King Theoden says with some hope in his eyes.
"Yes!"Gimli exclaims.
"Let this be the hour when we draw swords together."
Gimli leaves to blow the horn of the Helm Hammerhand and King Theoden speaks, "Fell deeds, awake. Now for wrath...now for ruin and a red dawn!"
We have mounted our horses. I have not seen Aerlinniel, I really hope she is alright. Aragorn draws his sword and King Theoden puts on his helmet. Gimli then blows the horn. The Uruk-hai break through the inner door.
King Theoden raises his sword in the air and shouts, "Forth Eorlingas!"
We gallop through the Uruk-hai down the hall, killing all in our path. Gimli sounds the horn again, as we leave Helms Deep and ride onto the causeway where thousands of Uruk-hai still crowd. Suddenly there is a white light and I look up. Gandalf appears on top of the hill top that is next to Helm's Deep riding Shadowfax who rears up.
"Theoden King stands alone." I hear Gandalf state, though it is faint.
Eomer rides up next to him and says, "Not alone." He then raises his sword high and calls, "Rohirrim!" They all ride up and the Uruk-hai stop fighting and look up.
"Eomer." King Theoden says happily.
Eomer then shouts, "To the king!"
Eomer, Gandalf and the Rohirrim ride down the steep hill towards the Uruks who surge forward holding their spears in front of them. As Gandalf nears them, he sends out a bright white light from his staff, blinding the Uruk-hai. They ride over the Uruk-hai and into battle, killing and fighting. I continue to kill them with my bow.
The Uruk-hai are fleeing from Helm's Deep. King Theoden, Gandalf, Aragorn, and I ride after them. They run to a forest of trees and Eomer suddenly rides out in front of us.
"Stay out of the forest! Keep away from the trees!" He warns.
We stop and watch as the Uruk-hai flee into the trees. The trees begin to move and screams are heard from the Uruk-hai as the trees kill them.
~~~
We are back in Helm's Deep and the men are piling up the dead Uruk-hai. I have been looking for Aerlinniel, but I haven't found her yet. I am starting to get worried. I find Gimli sitting on an Uruk-hai smoking his pipe and walk up to him.
"Final count.....42," I tell him.
He looks shocked and says, "Forty-two? That's not bad for a pointy-eared Elvish princeling. I myself am sitting pretty on 43."
I quickly draw an arrow and shoot it between Gimli's legs at the Uruk-hai he is sitting on. "Forty-three."
"He was already dead." Gimli states.
"He was twitching." I defend.
Gimli then shouts, "He was twitching...because he's got my axe embedded in his nervous system!"
I hear a laugh behind me and turn around to see Aerlinniel and relief washes over me.
"You both are so silly." She laughs again and shakes her head.
I hug her and she hugs me back. We stand there for a moment enjoying the hug until Gimli ruins our moment.
"Since you think this is so funny, how many did you kill?" He asks and Aerlinniel backs out of the hug.
"Well, if you must know. 46," She tells us with a proud smile.
"Ha! You beat the both of us. My dad did say you were and excellent fighter." Gimli tells her, laughing.
"Really? Your father told you that?" She questions.
"Aye, he did. And I can clearly tell that he was right. You are an excellent fighter indeed. Right Legolas?"
"Yes, it is true." I agree with him and Aerlinniel smiles at us.
~~~
Gandalf, Eomer, King Theoden, Gamling, Aragorn, Gimli, Aerlinniel and I all ride our horses to the top of the hill at the side of Helm's Deep, stopping at the top.
"Sauron's wrath will be terrible, his retribution swift." Gandalf tells us and pauses before continuing, "The battle for Helm's Deep is over. The battle for Middle-earth is about to begin. All our hopes now lie with two little Hobbits...somewhere in the wilderness."
Hope you all are enjoying this so far! :) How did you all like Legolas POV? Would you like me to do his POV more often? Updates are every Sunday and Thursday!
