Chapter 4: Asher's Past Among Other Things

Alice was stunned when Asher said he loved her.  All she could do at first was smile.  He put his finger to her lips and said, "You don't have to say anything.  I just wanted you to know that these 4 months that I've known you have been the best I've ever had. My dad was right when he said I would fall for someone.  I didn't believe him until you, Alice.  I haven't had a good past but I hope you know how much I care about you."  Alice replied, "Asher, I love you too.  I never thought that someone like you would come into my life and make me feel the way you do.  It was always Jeremy until I got to know you.  Love is when someone is willing to be by your side through hard times.  It doesn't matter about your past because it is what you do now that matters."

Asher beamed as Alice made his heart feel all warm and fuzzy.  He was in a dream like state thinking, "She loves me!  I thought she would choose Jeremy since they grew up together."  He replied, "I need to tell you about my past before I can honestly ask you a question that would change our relationship."  Alice's parents were about to come into the room.  Tara pulled her husband aside and said, "Let's give them some time together.  I can see by the way he looks at Alice.  It reminds me of how you always would do that when we started to fall for each other."  Nick reluctantly agreed only because he took a bullet for his daughter and he needed to call his son, Ashton, to see how Carly's murder case was progressing. Ashton quit his theater teaching job to work full time assisting his dad at the p.i. office along with training bodyguards.

Jeremy walked up to Tara and Nick and said, "Tell Alice I am leaving and will see her later." They nodded and then he left. He couldn't sit here knowing Alice, the love of his life, was in the other room with Asher. Jeremy decided he would drink and smoke his problems away until he saw a suspicious character outside the hospital. He decided to follow him.

Meanwhile, Asher told Alice, "For 2 years, I did drugs and smoked weed. I did anything to get a fix and I was a player, too. The girls knew what they got when hanging out with me. I was a terrible person until my dad sat down with me and said, 'you are throwing your life away'. I will not live forever and I wish to spend time with the son I know and love, not the person you are pretending to be.  That snapped me back into reality then I became a bodyguard. I helped my mom with the bills and I became a better person. At least I cleaned up my act before my dad told me that he had cancer.  I hope you understand that I am not a player like I was and I truly hated it when Jeremy did that to you."

He blushed out of embarrassment until Alice replied, "I am glad you told me this but I want you to know that I love you and it is okay." Asher looked into her eyes lovingly and started to kiss her. She broke the kiss to ask, "What was that question you wanted to ask me after your story?" Asher cleared his throat and said, "Alice, kitten, I wanted to ask you: Will you be my girlfriend?" Alice replied, "Hmmm...I don't know. I love you but, yes of course, Asher!" Asher chuckled saying, "Whew! You just had to tease me, kitten."

Luckily, Alice went to sit in a chair when the doctor came in along with her parents. Alice expected Jeremy to be there too but she wasn't surprised that he had left since he had problems with Asher. The doctor said, "I will give you a prescription for pain killers and if you promise to behave, then you can go home." Asher spoke up saying quickly, "No pain killers please!" Nick took the doctor aside and said, "His system doesn't take pain killers well. It makes him sick." The doctor replied, "Fine, then make sure he does not do too much extraneous activity then."

Asher looked to Nick and thanked him. Asher couldn't be on pain killers because he used to take those among other things when he was addicted to drugs. They signed him out and Asher called his mom. She was working in another country right now for her international business. She finally picked up the phone after several rings. Linda was shocked at the news of her son being shot. She offered to come home but Asher felt her tone was saying otherwise. He told his mom that it wasn't necessary since the Townsend's had it covered. Alice helped Asher to the car.

Nick said, "Asher, you can stay with us while you recover. I won't take no for an answer. I will go pick up your car from the bar where it happened."  Asher handed him the keys knowing that he wouldn't win the argument with Mr. Townsend.  Tara drove them home while Alice texted Jeremy, "I hope you are okay. This isn't like you. I know you feel broken hearted but being this irresponsible could make you get hurt. I don't know what I would do if I lost my best friend. My boyfriend could have died tonight!"

Jeremy read the texts and scoffed. He didn't bother replying since he was tailing that guy. He found out the black hoodie guy was meeting someone in the club. The guy didn't look familiar. The other guy that the stranger was meeting was his roommate Max. Jeremy left before they noticed him. He called Ashton leaving a message saying, "I know who is involved with Carly's case. The black hoodie guy is working with Max, my roommate. I will press Max when he gets back from the club where they met."

Outside the club, Jeremy ran into Penny and she said, "Fancy seeing you here, baby." She pulled him into a kiss. Jeremy thought, "I need to forget Alice.  She was the first girl I ever kissed but that meant nothing to her. It is time to have some fun." Penny grabbed his hand and said, "Come back to my place." Jeremy nodded as he turned his phone on silent.
