Godzilla Series: Showa

Gojira

Score: 10/10

Gojira is the perfect Godzilla movie. A dark film with the warning message of the nuclear bomb and what it could do to the world. Expertly crafted from the same people who was hit by the bombs. Godzilla became a legend when this movie came out and we would never have this icon without this film. It's the perfect kaiju movie and in my honest opinion, one of the best films ever made....

Godzilla Raids Again

Score: 3/10

Aaaand we move to shit. This film isn't terrible but dear god is it lacking compared to the first. The fight scenes are weird, the characters are far less intriguing, and Godzilla is never given a reason for how he came back. Only good thing about this is Anguiras.

King Kong vs Godzilla

Score: 6/10

Yeah the score changed from the last book but I still really enjoy this movie. It's dated and Godzilla is reduced to a dumb lizard but man this film is just so goofy in all the right ways. The final battle is a pure spectacle as is. If you want a good laugh and a fun time, watch this.

Mothra vs Godzilla

Score: 8-9/10

This film is awesome. Not only does it bring back the message of Godzilla being the result of nuclear testing and how it hurts the innocent, being Infant Island, it brings one of the best kaiju in the franchise, Mothra. Mothra is an amazing addition to this movie, a giant monster who fights for humanity. It's also got a powerful message about human greed.

Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster

Score: 9/10

This film is nearly just as good as Gojira. Bringing in Godzilla's greatest rival to end in a three vs one monster clash is incredible! Ghidorah is such a great villain that it's no wonder he's stayed for this long. What surprised me the most however was how engaging the human story is, that's very rare for Godzilla films.

Invasion of Astro Monster

Score: 7.5/10

Probably the best human story in the franchise, but it's held back by a few factors. The kaiju just feel like tools for the plot instead of being important factors and the fight scenes are ridiculously short. The human story held it though with the X People being one of the best villains in the franchise.

Ebirah, Horror of the Deep

Score: 5/10

This film is...alright I guess. It's enjoyable but it lacks the serious tone Godzilla has had before. It also brought in two of the dumbest kaiju in the franchise, Ebirah and the Giant Condor. This is the starting point for the massive tone shift for the franchise.

Son of Godzilla

Score: 4/10

This film is just dumb. It's extremely childish and sometimes just boring. The soundtrack is the worst part of it all, especially when it's used in serious moments! Also hot take: Minilla isn't that bad in this film. Yeah he's ugly and has a terrible roar but he actually goes through some character development as the film goes on.

Destroy All Monsters

Score: 7/10

What a lot of people consider one of the best showa films. It's good but it feels like a rehash of Invasion of Astro Monster. The plot and aliens feel exactly the same with their ideals and motives. At least there's more action moments and the epic final battle where all earth kaiju take on Ghidorah and absolutely curbstomp him!

Godzilla's Revenge

Score: 1/10

Fuck this film, easily the worst of the franchise.

Godzilla vs Hedorah

Score: 6/10

This film is...weird. The weirdest film of the franchise with the trippy imagery and moments. It's the basic pollution message but more interesting with Hedorah as an alien that absorbs pollution to make itself stronger. The tone just constantly shifts all the time in this film and it just feels like a mess.

Godzilla vs Gigan

Score: 4/10

Most people remember this film for Gigan and the talking monsters, which was only in the American dub, but trust me it's far worse than that. It's second half is littered with reused footage just given a dark filter to make it look like a different scene. It's absolutely pathetic and just reeks of laziness. MOST OF GHIDORAH'S SCREENTIME IS REUSED FOOTAGE!

Godzilla vs Megalon

Score: 6/10

This film has a massive problem of reused footage as well, all the destruction scenes are just reused footage. The only things holding this up are Megalon, Jet Jaguar, and that most of the entire fight is original. I felt as though this was supposed to give Jet Jaguar his own movie series but guess that didn't happen.

Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla

Score: 9/10

Finally a good film! Mechagodzilla is easily the best part as it's just such a cool idea! No wonder he came back in multiple movies cuz he's just that good! The human story is also intriguing as well, it's almost like the film looked back at Ghidorah and tried to make it as good as that one. Only downsides I believe is King Caesar, he doesn't really do much and gets his ass kicked.

Terror of Mechagodzilla

Score: 6/10

This film was just...weird. I don't really know how to put it but it was just strange. Mechagodzilla barely did anything, tho due to more emphasis being placed on Titanosaurus. He's cool just not as interesting as the other villains. Godzilla is a champ though as he actually struggles to get the win.

And that was the Showa Series. Despite my criticisms I did enjoy it for the "starting years" of Godzilla. Though I have to be honest, with all the tonal shifts and pure laziness in the films, I have to say it's the worst of the Godzilla series so far.
