Godzilla Series: Heisei

The Return of Godzilla

Score: 8/10

Man this movie was awesome and such an epic return to Godzilla! After a nine year wait we come back to advanced technology with shots, building sets, and special effects! Godzilla destroying a city had never looked so good! However this movie does have some problems. First half is really slow and the human scenes take too long. Also the characters aren't really that intriguing compared to previous films.

Godzilla vs Biollante

Score: 7/10

I did like this movie but for it being called "Godzilla vs Biollante" Biollante is not in the movie a whole bunch. I like to think of this as the "reverse Astro Monster" where in Invasion of Astro Monster the human story is really good but the monster scenes are kinda bad. Here it's the human story that's meh but the monster scenes are spectacular. Still, I think it would've worked better if we got more Biollante action.

Godzilla vs King Ghidorah

Score: 8/10

Many may say this movie is bad but I honestly really enjoyed it. True the time travel aspect is a bit shaky and the Terminator knock off is pretty dumb. And Ghidorah isn't the best in this movie, but honestly I still had a good time. The effects are amazing as ever and it's awesome to see what Godzilla was like before his mutation. Mecha-King Ghidorah is such a crazy concept that only the Heisei era can come up with it.

Godzilla and Mothra: Battle for Earth

Score: 5.5/10

It's no wonder this movie is considered the weakest out of the Heisei lineup. It's a blatant copy of the original 1964 film just with added crap and the message of "humanity bad, stop destroying the earth, companies are bad" got really annoying in the first half. Godzilla barely affects the story so that's also a downside. The only things holding this up are Battra and the final fight, both of which are very creative. This movie would've been better as a Mothra solo movie in all honestly.

Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla 2

Score: 8.5/10

Rewatching this film, I'm really surprised how much I enjoyed this film! Practical and special effects are great. The bond between Baby and Azusa is heartwarming. The battles are epic and even Rodan makes a badass comeback as Fire Rodan. Only problems is that the plot is pretty simple and Godzilla had a bit of plot armor in the end when he absorbed Rodan. But hey, I ain't complaining too bad.

Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla

Score: 8/10

Yeah this film is good as well. I'm glad they were able to take a pretty silly idea like SpaceGodzilla and make it work. Practical and special effects are just as good as Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla 2. Also Moguera is super underrated, dude put in effort at the last battle. However the second half does drag on a bit with the fight, it gets as if it was lasting way longer than it should. I was actually zoning out at some parts.

Godzilla vs Destroyah

Score: 10/10

The one a lot of you have been waiting for. This is among the GOATS of the Godzilla franchise. It's got it all. A good story, good kaiju action, callbacks to the first movie, multiple previous characters from the Heisei series show up in it. Destroyah is one of Godzillas greatest enemies. The movie is incredible emotional, with Destroyah killing Junior and the heartbreaking finale of Godzilla's death. It truly feels like the end of Godzilla and his final hurrah. My legitimate only problem with this is I wish the final fight was just A BIT longer. Other than that, it's on the same level as Gojira.

And thus ends the Heisei era. This era of Godzilla films is a fan favorite and for obvious reasons. The practical effects are incredible as well as the invention of better special effects compared to Showa. There was an embrace to sci fi as the main setting. The monsters are unique and memorable, and Godzilla isn't a hero like in the Showa era. He's more situated as an anti-hero, a force of nature that fights to protect his kin or defend the earth, his territory. However I do understand the complaints that people have and do understand that some aspects of the Heisei era are overrated. But that doesn't stop this era of Godzilla from being great!
