ONE
KELLER'S P.O.V
I'm only thirteen years old, yet today marks my first day of public school. Ever. I'd like to say I'm not different from any other fairy in Fairyland, but I am. There's a darkness deep inside me, one that yearns to break free.
My friends reassure me that it's only the doubt I hold for myself. Did I mention my friends, or the fact I have them? Well, I do although I've never been to public school.
Today is considered a momentous day for me. It's the day that defines the rest of the school year. Fear associated with not be accepted is far from my mind. What I'm really afraid of is the darkness within me. My parents say I'm made of pure light, but that's a lie I'm used to hearing.
There's something they aren't telling me, something I plan on finding out. But today their secrets are not my main focus, all I'm focused on is surviving the day.
I wake up once thin beams of sunlight enter my room, feeling far from excited. I feel more confused or uncertain about the path that lies ahead of me. My brush rakes through my tangled blonde hair as thoughts of uncertainty flood my brain. This 'new life' ahead of me has me very hesitant.
My hands grip the hem of a shirt, pulling it over my bare skin. It's then that my eyes latch on to my reflection, icy blue eyes glancing back at me. They appear so pure, almost as if they don't match my complexion.
I expect them to darken as my stare stays on the glass. Nothing. Still the same color. I continue to study my reflection. Wings aren't attached to my back, the reason being so because they became a thing of the past. Now, we could be compared to humans.
Except for one small detail, magic. Magic is something we contain that humans don't. Since I'm starting Middle School (eighth grade), I'll be learning magic. Practicing magic sounds like an adventure.
Maybe it could be a way to control the power I feel inside me. A knock at my door reaches my ears, and I look at my reflection once more. My hand wraps around the front door's knob, swinging open to reveal my friend, Katie. Her brown eyes meet my own from outside.
"Hey, Keller." She greets, twirling a piece of her dirty blonde hair.
"Hey, Katie." I reply with a genuine smile.
"Are you ready to go, or do you need more time to daydream?" She muses jokingly.
"Shut up." I say sheepishly, slinging my backpack over one shoulder. "And yes, I am ready to leave."
"Then let's go, shall we?"
"We shall."
She gestures dramatically for me to exit before her, to which I roll my eyes at with a giggle. We start towards the school, a casual but unimportant conversation being said.
This is one of my best friends, a person who understands me. Katie and I walk towards our school, Fairy Land Middle School. This day will define all the rest.
