The End of the World
A girl, visibly around 20, sits on the edge of the building. To most who could see her from countless stories below, she might even look like she was about to jump. A select few, however, would look up and see a faintly cracking hallow, a pair of white feathery wings turning black to match.
Not that anyone did look up. The countless people milling below were so caught up in their own tasks, jobs, and stress, that they didn't even think to look up.
'If only,' she wondered, turning her gaze up to the beginnings of starry skies, 'if they knew their actions would be meaningless in the next few hours, what would they chose to do?'
She heard the sound of a portal behind her. She felt the flames of hellfire, heard the screams of the tormented, yet she didn't flinch. It just meant that he was here, right on time.
"What did you want to talk about Mira?" A man that looked her same age walked out of the portal, closing it behind him. He would look rather charming, but the same few to see the girl's wings would see his horns and pointed tail, the red in his irises, and the cat-like pupils of his eyes.
He was about to tell a joke of some kind, but the sight of her stopped him in his tracks. He carefully approached, sitting beside her and using two gentle fingers to force her tear-glazed eyes to look at him.
"Stardrop," he said gentler than could be expected from any demon or man, "What's wrong?"
"It's all over, Daevan." Mira, who's name once meant gift of god, whispered, "They're going to war in just a few hours. But in the process..." she buried her face in his chest and hugged him tightly.
"The entire world will die." He finished for her, voice quiet in shock. He gently ran circles on her back, between her wings where they were turning black as night. He frowned at it, realizing they were the very reason.
The angel who fell in love with a demon. They hid it for centuries, and even found children to watch over from a distance as they obviously couldn't have any themselves. Some turned out great, beautiful people. Some turned out worse for wear. Others still became a balance between the two.
They hid it until ten years ago, the year 2018, when God and the Devil saw them on a date. Normally they went to some far off, remote place where they wouldn't think to look, or they would put on disguises and hide among the masses of humankind. On this particular date, they had made a mistake, Daevan used his powers, and Mira was banished from Heaven for fear of being under the influence of evil.
Ten years ago, today, her wings slowly turned black. Within a few hours, for fear of either lover being swayed towards good or bad all this time, Heaven and Hell would wage war on earth, which was likely to be destroyed in the process.
And with it, so would she. She was cast out from Heaven, and no angel would be accepted into Hell. Instead she would either be destroyed, or be lost to space and the void left behind forever.
He knows this, but she didn't. She didn't realize what having no purpose nor any means to carry it out would do to her internally. Instead he just let her cry, then picked her up bridal-style, careful not to hurt her wings.
"D-Daevan!" She yelped, "What are you doing?" She fumbled, wrapping her arms around his neck so she wouldn't fall.
"If we only have a few hours left here," he said determinedly, "We are going on a date." He walked right off the edge, the both of them disappearing in flame.
When they reappeared, they were in a secluded, forgotten forest. He walked through the trees to a seaside cliff, smelling of wood and the ocean. He set her down and snapped his fingers, a picnic blanket with various delicacies spreading out before them.
They talked, ate, laughed, cried, and watched the stars in each other's arms. The world seemed to stand still around them, the impeding threat fading away.
And if somewhere, beneath the earth and above the clouds, two great beings of power saw them? Two beings who, despite the distance, silently looked at each other and decided not to wage war that day? Well, who's to say.
