We both sat there, just staring at the whole view; taking everything in. After hugging him awhile ago made things awkward. None of us tried to talk or to start a conversation like we normally do, so we just enjoyed the scene while it lasted.
It was hard not to pry my eyes away but Sans broke the silence first when he popped a ketchup bottle open.
Usually, he'd be chugging the whole bottle down and something unexpected happens next. Just like last time in Grillby's yesterday when I was ticked off by being the laugh of the crowd.
If It wasn't an accident then I would've stormed out before he could even apologize;
And I'm not waiting for anything like it to happen twice.
So, I started the chat.
"Hey, Sans. Do you ever feel lonely..?" I absentmindedly asked, my eyes locked to the ceiling of gems.
He just snickered and raised a brow while tipping the bottle half empty.
"lonely..? what makes you think that I'm Bonely?"
I snorted.
"Well, I don't want to pry and ask but...Do you miss the life you had with your parents?" asking, I stared right at him.
'This might be the right time to get information from him about his parents.
Even if it would only just be a few, it'll be a handful.'
There's really nothing that we can talk about except me wanting to know him better, besides, I'm a dry person on bringing up good topics.
If I'd be staying longer in here, (which I do think so) then I should at least know something about everyone.
It'll be rude to simply walk into them and leave like nothing happened, right?
"eh, they're fine I guess..." he shrugged.
His eyes were sullenly drooped down; it was the same look he'd been showing whenever he spaces out.
I can tell that he's avoiding the topic and I wanted to know why.
My curiosity is starting to drive me nuts!
"C'mon, I know there's more than that." I asked nudging him with my free hand as I tried to lift up his spirits.
"look Frisk, I don't really want to talk about it. Its just pointless." He scooted away with the irritated look on his face.
He's really avoiding the topic and I bet that he wanted to put an end to this,
but I don't and won't let this one slide out easily.
"Pointless for you but it isn't for me."
He grimaced, avoiding my serious demeanor.
"Hey, I know it isn't my business to get it out you but keeping this wouldn't help. You gotta talk it off sometimes, you gotta let it go. It bothers me to see someone in pain."
His expression tightened.
"Don't deny it, that look on your face reveals the truth." I frowned, following his gaze.
A smile slowly crept up on his face. It wasn't a convincing one nor a genuine one either.
It was....
A shaky one.
"heh...I can't leave this one out, can I?"
I nodded a no. He looked doubtful to start by the way his gaze fell but I guess he was just collecting his thoughts.
"welp, its a long story..." he slouched up and heaved a deep breath.
He paused, building up the moment for me to sit up next to him.
I was intrigued so I never peeled my eyes nor my ears away from him. It was as if I was a kid ready to listen to a cool story.
'This is the first time he opened up to me;
I'd better not waste this opportunity.'
"i had a dad alright..." his voice scratchy and deep.
"his name's Gaster, W.D. Gaster. He was a great inventor and a great dad to me and Papyrus."
'So that explains it, Its really him who I saw in my nightmare.
But why warn me about this, sane girl?
Should I tell him about the dream..?'
"when we settled here in the Underground, he was the first at everything; The first to improve the life of everyone, alongside with the King and Queen. He changed the Underground with his works."
"man, he was the best..." He smiled, reminiscing the past.
'He must admire and respect him so much.' I thought,
but he trailed off somehow so suddenly.
His phalanges molded into tight fists as he closed his eyes to calm his emotions from bursting free, but it didn't helped much now that he's trembling.
"till then, he was consumed by grief and Sadness all over again. He wanted to bring her back; to bring our mother back to prevent her from dying in his arms, back before when me and Papyrus where still newborns. He thought that if he could change the future of everyone, then he might also change the past."
"day after day and night after night...he kept himself busy in his lab, real desperate to bring her back.
Then that day came, when he finally finished his so called best invention. He tried it despite knowing what dangerous changes it may bring in the future....." He shook slightly and I patted his shoulder lightly.
"h-he l-left......not knowing that it'll be his last." That's when a tear threatened to fall; He wiped it away fast, anxious that he would be showing too much emotion.
'I think it wouldn't be necessary to tell him about the dream...he's handling too much already and I don't want to be a burden to weigh more of his problems.'
I can never judge him, and that's what I've learned to reflect on.
I misunderstood him.
I thought that he was hiding something from me but boy was I wrong.
He was hiding his own emotions from himself and to everyone, coating it with fake smiles and humour.
He never wanted to deal with the fear that haunts him.
"I'm sorry, Sans. I....should've not pushed you this far...."
"don't be, its all buried in the past now; even if I did sulk, it wouldn't bring me any good."
Now I understand why he always seems distracted and distant when I talk about my family.
He misses them, just like how I do.
Well at least he doesn't feel much regret like how I do,
but even though he isn't in the same boat as me; nothing would still weigh heavier than losing your loved ones,
its one of the worst things to live in...
"heh, I can't believe I'm saying this to you but i've always kept this feeling, 'just don't wanna spill the mood around folks."
It must've been hard to keep this all to himself after all these years.
"but...i'm contented now, guess I just needed to accept the bitter truth. Thanks for sharing the cheesy talk with me." he casually said with a soft chuckle, his cheeks heating up with embarrassment.
I couldn't help but grin from seeing this new side of him. It feels foreign yet heart warming.
"Haha no bigs..! Ya know what they say, Cheesy talks makes a stickier relationship!" I laughed, constantly screaming inside in realization of what I just said.
'That doesn't sound right...'
I pulled on a tight face.
'I'm not gonna be embarrassing myself for this time.'
"A-a-as f-friends!! You know...! G-getting along and-"
His smile grew wider and laughed uncontrollably.
'Too late...'
"GAH! QUIT LAUGHING WILL YOU?!" I face palmed, failing to hide my crimson cheeks.
His hearty laughs echoed around us. It grew louder and louder by the time the echo flowers mimicked his laughter.
"will I? you wouldn't want to embarrass yourself further now." he grinned cheekily, teasing me again before chugging the ketchup bottle he hadn't finished.
"Ahahaha...what a charm" I laughed sarcastically and snatched his sweet drink away from him for distraction. His eyes caught the act and tried to sound firm.
"wha- h-hey!" He grew agitated, trying to snatch the bottle out of my grasp.
"Not happening" I grinned deviously at him.
He scoffed and grunted, trying to look twice as threatening as possible.
"What's wrong? Cat got your tongue?~"
His expression changed into a sly smirk, seeming to read my mind to where this was heading.
"don't start on me, pal or you'll regret it."
"Oh yes I would."
I smiled mischievously, taunting him further of his antics.
"Try me."
And the chase was on. I smile triumphantly whenever Sans fails to stumble and catch me.
It was hard to deny,
because I enjoy teasing him 'cause he falls onto it fast; Sadly, it only happens once in a blue moon.
Maybe that's the reason why I feel overly active around him...?
Waiting for the opportunity to get my payback.
Psh! Me and my childish thinking.
"ya better pick up the pace, coz I'm gonna get you!" He warned as he was starting to slow down.
He took a quick stop, panting heavily, desperately catching his breath.
"aging too soon are we, Sans?"
"heh, don't get so cocky. I'm just warming up!"
"Hahaha! Oh really?~"
With a swift movement, I found myself being carried on his shoulder.
"another point for me, heh."
"H-hey! Y-you c-cheater!?!" I practically yelled, an explosion of red fuming all over my face.
He rolled his eyes sarcastically.
"cheater or not, I know toucan play the game."
"Ugh...Put me down will ya?!" My fists tried to reach his back but I only ended up flailing helplessly.
He chuckled at my desperate actions and looked around the echo flower patch which emitted a brighter glow.
"nah, its getting late. We should be back sooner." he noted, giving small packs on my back as he started walking languidly.
"I can walk you know." I scoffed, making a sassy remark.
"with that small steps from earlier? I don't think so." He said as he started to walk straight ahead.
"Are you saying that I'm short?!" I retorted.
This guy is just impossibile.
Height doesn't really matter for me but It gets over the top when they make fun of my height.
I mean, 5'2 Isn't THAT short, right?
He ignored my previous question.
"Hah! Why don't you just teleport us then??" Crossing my arms, I huffed chuckling.
"tired." He blankly said.
"and it's all your fault. But since I'm nice, I'll carry you home." He smirked, my hands now flailing haphazardly on his back.
Shoving, tugging, punches- nothing worked.
"W-w-what?!"
"you're welcome."
I sighed, seeing no point why to argue with him.
I was tired; yes, but knowing someone carrying me on their shoulder is rather embarrassing.
***
The shoulder ride was silent and bumpy.
I didn't know if he's tripping himself on purpose to annoy me on the way but I can't blame him.
He looks tired,
REALLY tired.
We weren't even crossing the borders of Snowdin and yet his grasp on my waist loosens with every step.
Its troubling because I-
We might end up falling.
"Umm..Sans, you sure you can still pick up?" I trembled, glancing over my behind, occasionally.
"yeah, we're almost there." He grunted, struggling to keep his senses alive.
"Okay....?"
Once he laid foot on the front porch, I immediately hopped off and started stretching my stiff body.
"Thanks for the ride, Sans."
"anytime."
"Don't take your problems on your own.....okay?" His eye twitched in surprise, bewildered if I'm still kidding or not.
"What? Can't I be concerned?" I raised a brow at him.
He smiled. "heh...alright."
I returned a satisfied nod.
As he was about to jam the keys, my sensitive senses abruptly perked up.
"Sans? Do you smell that?" I scrunched my nose.
"smell what?"
"I smell something burning...?" I asked, biting my lower lip.
We exchanged troubling looks and opened the door hastily, the exhaustion clearly washed away from his face.
Sans and I rushed into kitchen, to be met by his one and only brother. The burnt smell grew worse from there.
"SANS! YOU'RE JUST IN TIME FOR MY MARVELOUS SPAGHETTI!" Papyrus blurted enthusiastically.
A plate of burnt pasta was on his gloved hands. He was gesturing Sans to eat it but Sans looks hesitant to take a single bite;
Neither do I would like a bite.
"umm paps, i think that-"
Papyrus shoved a mouthful of spaghetti into his mouth and it was enough to shush him up.
"HOW WAS IT?" Papyrus asked Sans with
glee, as sans face scrunched up a bit. He smiled as he gulped the spaghetti, giving his brother a two thumbs up.
"its kinda burnt, but its good." He said, wiping the sauce off his mouth.
I smiled, seeing how he wanted to not disappoint his brother.
"paps, i'd like you to meet someone." Sans chimed, as he beckoned me to come closer.
Both of my hands ran cold from nervousness since all Papy did was stare at me from head to toe. All I could do was remain still and hope that he wouldn't do anything to me.
"OH MY SPAGHETTI! YOU CAPTURED A HUMAN!" papyrus squealed, dropping the spatula that clattered on the floor. The clatter raised the tension pumping in my body.
"nah i didn't capture her paps, she's my friend." I squeaked when Sans pulled me by his side.
That sudden action embarrassed me for a bit...
But I have to pull myself together; I gotta lessen this shyness of mine somehow.
Papyrus nodded in approval as he kneeled in front of me. He's actually tall, taller than Toriel.
His skull almost touches the ceiling actually. How does he live like this?
"HELLO HUMAN! WHAT IS YOUR NAME?" he piped up enthusiastically.
"The name's F-frisk..." I trembly said like a leaf, taking side glances at the awkwardness.
"OH HO! DON'T WORRY HUMAN! I WON'T HURT YOU!" He reassured, seeming to notice my fidgety movements.
"I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, WOULD NEVER HURT ONE OF MY BROTHER'S FRIENDS!" he spat, as he heroically puffed his chest.
I giggled at his pleasing attitude.
'Papyrus seemed nice.'
I didn't really want to doubt him but I've pretty developed a mentality to always keep my guards up to new faces.
Sans told me a lot about Papyrus and his quirks but I never expected him to be so...welcoming;
Not that its a bad thing but I'm far from glad that he's friendly.
Realizing that I've been staring for quite some time,
I gathered up my courage and happily replied.
"Yup! your new friend."
He was astounded from my hug. I was never a person to show my emotions easily but seeing how Papyrus accepted me at once changed that.
"NYEHEHEH! I HAVE A HUMAN FRIEND!" he happily stated, swinging me up in the air as he held me into a bone crushing hug.
Sans only chuckled at Papyrus' childish actions for he too was crushed by his embrace.
"paps can you please put-"
"p-put u-us d-down." We both said in unison.
"OH SORRY HUMAN AND SANS! I GOT CARRIED AWAY." Papyrus flashed an apologetic look.
Sans was caught up from what he said as he grinned from ear to ear.
'Typical, Sans.' I slightly chuckled.
"I KNOW I KNOW, I MADE AN INCIDENTAL PUN, JUST DON'T GIVE ME THAT LOOK, ITS REALLY ANNOYING." he sighed still annoyed as he waved his hands off.
"Its okay papyrus." I responded, grinning at their interesting attitude.
"welp, now that ya both got to know each other....might as well, invite everyone?" Sans started, unsure of what to say.
"Invite...? E-everyone...?"
"GREAT IDEA BROTHER! I WILL MAKE US MORE OF MY MARVELOUS SPAGHETTI! OHHH~ IT WOULD BE FANTASTIC LIKE A PARTY!!" Papyrus beamed, gathering all his ingredients in a flash.
"P-party...?"I mumbled.
"WHY YES HUMAN!! HAVEN'T YOU CELEBRATED A PARTY YET??"
I pondered.
I never really had a party in awhile...
Not that I even remember If I even had one.
"THEN FEAR NOT HUMAN! FOR WE SHALL MAKE IT EXQUISITE AND GRAND JUST FOR YOU!" his pinpricks gleaming with pride and joy.
"ALTHOUGH I DOUBT SANS IDEA OF PARTY IS THE OPPOSITE..." Papyrus rolled his eyes and scoffed at his laid back brother.
With all his worries washed away, Sans flopped himself on the couch and heaved a sigh.
"whatever you say bro." He shrugged, almost lulling himself to sleep.
Papyrus only looked as annoyed as ever.
"GAH! WHY DO I HAVE TO DO ALL THE WORK!" he pitied himself and started the kitchen work.
"Oh, you don't have to. I can help you if you want!" I gave him a reassuring smile but he looked doubtful for a moment.
"NONSENSE! A GUEST IS A GUEST! LET ME AND SANS DO THE WORK!" He waved it off, marching towards the sofa.
"But-"
"SANS! GET UP YOU LAZY BONES! DON'T YOU EVEN HAVE ANY CONSCIENCE TO HELP YOU-
"I think he needs to sit this one out Papy." I cut him off, occasionally glancing at the tired heap of blue on the sofa.
"Sans umm...did helped me a lot today. I think it would be best for him to rest." Papyrus seemed to be satisfied from my explanation.
"HMM, ALRIGHT. I GUESS I'LL JUST CALL EVERYONE TO COME OVER THEN." He noted and walked off to tuck Sans underneath the blankets.
'Sans sure is lucky to have a caring brother' I thought.
"I could teach you some other recipes if that's ok."
"great, we could use a new menu-"
I cleared my throat, interrupting Sans' mindless reply as I gave him an annoyed look.
"What I mean is that, I don't know much but I mostly do the cooking when my parents aren't around."
"OF COURSE! I SEE WHY NOT! IT WOULD BE A NICE TIME FOR US TO GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER!"
I sighed and followed him to the counter.
"I'll gather up the ingredients then."
'Man, how do you even catch up with this cinnamon roll's hyperactive energy??'
Just by the corner of my eye, I saw Sans slowly walking upstairs, carrying the pillows and a bundled up blanket with him.
"Sans, where are you going?"
His eyes were half lidded as he replied.
"huh..? Oh, I'll just snooze up in my room."
"Ok, we'll call you later then."
"a'ight, no funny kitchen business, got it?"
"YES INDEED, WE'LL TAKE CARE OF IT." Papyrus and I grinned at him with a thumbs up by the doorway.
While Papyrus was washing the unattended dirty dishes, I can't help but take glances at the tired skeleton descending upstairs.
I don't know why but he reminds me of something oddly familiar...
I just can't pin my thoughts straight.
"IS THERE ANYTHING THAT TROUBLES YOU, HUMAN?"
His loud voice clicked me back to business.
"N-nothing..." I stuttered, whipping my head back to face him.
"OH? IT SEEMS LIKE MY BROTHER HAS PIQUED YOUR INTEREST." He chuckled to himself, leaving his chore for a moment.
"N-no! I was just curious about something..." My face flushed red.
"WELL, DON'T HESITATE TO ASK ME ANYTHING! SANS COULD BE QUITE A MYSTERIOUS PERSON, SO IT'S NORMAL TO BE INTERESTED." The clattering of pots echoed his booming voice.
Even if I did ask Papyrus about his brother, I doubt that it'll be able to answer the weird questions bubbling in my head.
"Yeah....sure...."
