• Chapter 8: Warnings? •

(The man who speaks in hands by me ^w^)

"Goodnight, mom and dad." I whispered, pecking a soft kiss on the locket.

With the blankets draped on me and Sans cozy jacket, everything felt comfortable.

I snuggled on the pillows until the warmth lulled me into a deep sleep.

»*****«

I woke up in an absolutely dark room. I wandered around, feeling the cold floor against my feet.

Realizing that I've been pacing around for minutes gave me the idea that I'm not in Sans room

But...

In Some place else...

"Where...am I..?" I mumbled, my voice echoing amidst my small whisper.

My sense of sight didn't helped me to figure out my surroundings more but I kept my hearing sensitive to any kind of sound, hopefully getting even just a slight information that I can hold on to.

I continued to wait, walk and listen but nothing came.

For a good few seconds, I felt and heard the howling wind brushing against my face, sending shivers down my spine. They seemed to be voices but I can't make out the words they uttered.

They seemed foreign.

Out of nowhere, a door opened before me, it exposed a blinding white light that shone on me.

I squinted from the blast of light and shielded my vision. There was something else that I can make out in the view, a tall black silhouette.

"Who are you?" I trembled.

The figure approached me, revealing more of its features.

There, a tall skeleton wearing a black cloak that covered most of his body loomed ahead.

It was strange to think but he resembled Sans and Papyrus so much. It was enough to think that he might be their dad.

Its undoubtedly him.

But how am I seeing him...?

Sans never told me anything about his father. The pained expression that I see from him tells me that their dad was long gone, he felt sorrow but I guess it isn't enough to explain everything.

Once the blinding light ceased down, I finally got to see him fully and clearly.

A crack ran up his eye socket and the other ran down to his mouth. The face he's wearing showed exasperation and pain but was brushed off especially by the time he saw me.

"I am W.D. Gaster." he signed, using his holed phalanges.

He's using Winding texts that faded into my view, I eventually noticed by the familiar hand gestures he made.

"What am I doing here?" I asked timidly, not knowing how or when to start.

He smiled lightly then changed to a stern look, he answered. "You're dreaming, I have managed to talk to you here, but not for long, I wanted to warn you about her."

Many thoughts went racing into my mind, somehow trying to find their way out of me.

Appearing in the darkness was never a good sign to dreaming and I knew of it. It represents the mere thought of being lost and pathless.

Reflecting to my past thoughts ever since that incident really proved that I'm pathless and confused...

However, seeing a skeleton reveal himself before the light, simply responding to my words is a different idea.

"Who?!" I questioned in a demanding tone.

I'm never good at judging people, whether they may be good or bad at first encounter, that's why I always seem to be in a heap of trouble,

Digging my own grave that is.

Learning from it, I always remind myself to keep my guard alert and ready, Even towards Sans and Papyrus' father.

His image started to glitch like a scratched tape, not even bothering to answer me, till he started to fade into a blur of black.

I can tell that he was trying to hold back from it. By the way he gritted his teeth, the pain he feels must be unbearable.

What's going on?!

Why is he glitching?

Is it because he's in pain...?

I may never know the answer, knowing that this is a dream. Dreams are unpredictable and we can't explain their meanings easily.

Am I waking up......?

"Who are you talking about?! Please don't go!" I desperately called out, running to get to him.

The darkness starts to close in, as if swallowing the light he started.

I'm once and for all, back into nothingness...

"Beware of the child who bears the knife." His' croaky deep voice echoed around, halting me into my helpless tracks.

A girl with short brown hair appeared. My vision was hazy so, I didn't get to recognize her facial features.

She was about my height. It didn't bother me much but the knife she grasped tightly on her hand and the sickly grin she wore troubled me.

She lay motionless and frozen on the stand with the bangs covering her eyes like a lifeless doll. My heart rose up to my throat because of the rising tension and thump of fear that I felt as a minute passes.

Anticipating for a swift movement, she did nothing but to stifle a shrill blood curdling laugh.

I fell on my knees and clutched my head tight from the hammering pain that continuously surged within me.

Her laugh was sane and psychotic. It clawed my mind as if draining all my sanity and happy memories.

I struggled to scream and stop her.

"Back off!" I yelled which cut her off.

Rising her chin up slowly, she revealed her glinting red eyes behind the bangs, staring right at me.

"Nice to see you again sissy." She giggled, but spat her words like poison at me.

Smiling devilishly, she cackled shortly. Her gaze falling on her bloody knife.

"See you soon.." she grinned, dashing in full speed towards me.

Everything happened quickly, I screamed helplessly and gathered my feet to run, her giggles fading as I ran. Thankfully, it was enough to drive me out of the dream-

No,

The nightmare.

My breaths were uneven and shaky. It was as if everything that had happened was real.

I took deep breaths and consoled myself repeatedly that none of it was real.

My mind might've been playing its silly tricks on me again,

But some part of me wanted to believe they were real and that there's a good reason to why I should stick with it.

Should I be at least troubled about this...?

About this girl....?

And that Gaster guy...

Should I believe him...?

Maybe it would be better if I talked to Sans about it.

On second thought, I never really wanted to disturb Sans with just a single nightmare.

Its too childish to come running to him and confessing my fear like a coward.

It could've not been real.....

Could it....?

Unsure of what to think, I peeled off the bed and decided to take a nice warm shower to shake me up for a bit.

Having that nightmare made me reconsider getting into bed again.

It was too frightening to get back in it and I wouldn't even dare to risk and try my courage for it.

'That's one bad wake up call, i say.'

My hearing twitched when I heard soft groans and mutters around from the living room, It was Sans.

Sighing in distress, I shakily climbed downstairs, almost missing the right steps on the way down.

He was tossing and turning around the couch with a pained look etched on his face.

'He's probably having nightmares too.'

My merciful conscience got the most of me and also regret for letting him sleep on the couch without any blanket or a pillow.

Frowning in pity, I immediately went upstairs to lend him my pillow and my blanket.

I know he needs it more than I do.

I carefully flung the blanket onto him and slowly positioned the pillow under his skull.

He was still stirring but he didn't seem to be aware of my presence.

I never thought it would've really worked because he stopped. His uncomfortable expression shifted into a small smile of comfort and satisfaction.

"thanks, paps." his hand unknowingly reached mine and grasped it lightly, a warm smile creeping up his face.

I tensed up from his sudden touch, sending my face to blur in a light shade of red.

Its weird but I felt my soul leap in joy, driving it in a fizz. A sudden outburst that I can't contain, somewhat similar from yesterday but stronger...?

Realizing that the feeling was absurd, I gently shook his hand off and noted that I had better plans.

'This isn't the time to give way to foreign feelings.'

Traveling upstairs once again, I got the red backpack that Toriel gave me and made a bee line for the bathroom.

All done and dry, I slipped on the spare set of clothes Toriel packed me, just like the ones I wore.

Lastly, I wrapped the scarf she personally knitted for me. It suddenly reminded me of the pies and the warmth of her quaint little house that I miss so much.

Its cold out there, so I knitted you a scarf. Stay safe my child! :) -the sticky note she left read.

She really wanted me to be comfortable and safe even if she didn't tagged along.

A real mother she is.

I smiled as my memories of her caring nature flooded my thoughts for a moment.

Thanks, mom.

Hearing soft steps from below rang the bells for me to hurry and meet Sans for breakfast.

|| Sans' POV ||

I blinked for a couple of times and sat up the sofa, groggily reaching for my slippers.

Man...another haunting nightmare.

They're getting more and more realistic than the last.

I grunted and trudged into the kitchen, hoping to find Papyrus cooking.

As I entered our tidy kitchen, the drooling smell of spaghetti lingered around the place, filling my senses.

Paps isn't around but he left a small note with scribbled handwriting.

His writing was always like this but I would always try to make out the words in it.

DEAR BROTHER,

I COOKED THIS MARVELOUS SPAGHETTI FOR YOU! I LEFT EARLY THIS MORNING FOR MY SPECIAL TRAINING WITH UNDYNE, I'LL BE HOME EARLY THIS AFTERNOON. HAVE A GOOD DAY!

~NYEHFULLY YOURS~
THE GREAT PAPYRUS

"aww, thanks bro."

Surprisingly, the spaghetti was delicious and it looked more edible than usual (Not that I hate his cooking).

"i guess he's starting to develop his cooking skills."

Undyne does her job well.

To be honest, I never really wanted to let Paps join the Royal Guard. The tasks given to them are to the extreme, to the extreme that they'll never hesitate to kill anyone who crosses them.

Papyrus is too innocent for the duty. I wanted him to be safe from harm and be happy at the same time, and that's when Undyne comes in.

She promised me that she'll keep a watchful eye on him during his training sessions with her and to not work him tired to the bone. Eventually, she decided to direct his attention to cooking lessons sometimes to hopefully change his interest in the guard.

But knowing Papyrus, he never gives up that easily. He has that undying passion for everything, it is one of the many things that amazes me about him.

He always tells me that he wanted to join the guard to protect everyone from harm and to seek the right of justice.

Heh.

So much courage and optimism...

So much like her...

I sighed glumly and piled up the dirty dish on the countertop.

"Mornin' Sans, an early bird, are we?"

Frisk emerged from the doorway and yawned for a bit.

"nah, just got hungry."

She just hummed in response.

"Oh hey, I forgot to hand your jacket over last night. Toriel knitted me a scarf so I guess I wouldn't be needing it anymore. Thanks." she shyly mumbled, turning my jacket over.

"eh, its fine and, welcome. Oh, and I uh, saved you some spag." her eyes twinkled there for a bit, in excitement and hunger I guess.

She didn't wasted another moment when she laid eyes on the table and she started to dig in.

I chuckled and grabbed a cold glass of water for her in the fridge.

"man, you have one big stomach for Papyrus' spaghetti. I'm sure you'll both get along real good."

"This tastes real good! You never told me that your brother is a chef." she awed, down to her last bite.

"well, that's just his hobby and he's still taking his lessons though."

"Speaking of your brother, where is he??"

"Training, training to be part of the guard."

"He's an outgoing person, eh? Your total opposites." she snickered.

"hey, better a snoozer than a boozer." I smirked.

As she was about to pile up her dish, I looked out of the hazy window and rubbed it for a clearer view.

Maybe I can show her around for a bit.

There's seriously nothing to do if we just stay put in the house, we'll be bored to death before an hour even passes.

Humming my idea, I eagerly slipped on my jacket.

"hey Frisk, ya wanna go out and explore the underground?" I asked.

"Sure! Let me wash these first." she beamed, gathering the dishes as she reached for our tall sink.

She grunted, as she tried to reach the sink on her toes.

Aww

she can't reach it, now I know the reason why I don't bother washing the dishes, except the fact that I'm lazy, hehe.

"umm..kiddo? do ya need help?" I asked pacing towards her, preventing myself to laugh at her current situation.

"Nononono! I can handle this." She huffed and pushed a chair before the sink.

Climbing on, her legs suddenly wobbled, sending the chair to tumble backwards.

With a swift movement, I rushed forward and caught her.

Right on time

"ooof!"

Our foreheads bumped from the impact making the both of us flinch. Till then, I realized that she was staring right at me.

Her figure lays perfectly on my arms with her arms around my neck, our faces merely two inches apart. It was an awkward position to be in and my mind was racing on what to do.

Her stare captivated me there for a moment because of the blue twinkle in her eyes.

Wow...

Her eyes...

she's...

She's-Stop it sans!

Embarrassment took me over as we both pushed ourselves away. I hardly tried to look away, blushing a bright blue.

"Uhhh...ehhh I'm sorry ehehe, I should've been more careful." She apologized, averting her blushing face away from me as her eyes shot everywhere.

"hehe don't s-s-sweat it...." I stuttered, looking away, to prevent her seeing my blue tinted face.

'Bad move, Sans. This is not the time to be daydreaming.'

"you could just leave those dishes there, paps would wash 'em later, besides, its too tall for me or you to reach em." I casually said, as my blush started to fade.

"Oh OK, so, were are we going first?" She asked, grinning widely, as she tucked that buttercup behind her ear.

"you'll know when we get there, but first, ya must close your eyes."

|| Frisk's POV ||

I stared at him in disbelief but gave in anyways.

"Fine, but this must not better be a prank." I sighed and shut my eyes tight.

"trust me and you'll see."

I snickered to myself. "Trust, that's a strong word."

I felt his boney hands wrap around mine and it made me cringe as my cheeks burned up.

The ground beneath me whirred and shook, making me grip his hand tighter in nervousness and dizziness. My body felt unsteady that I felt as if I'm about to stumble from a rollercoaster ride and It feared me for a bit.

"S-sans? Y-you're done for if this is another prank of y-yours!" I shakily retorted as his grasp left mine.

I heard him chuckle.

"wait, don't peek." I heard him say,

Along the rushing waters?

Its been awhile since I've closed my eyes and it made me uncomfortable and agitated.

"S-sans?" I asked, getting nervous and jittery.

"okay, you can open them now." I slowly fluttered them open.

"Wow..." Was all I managed to say.

"now tell me if this is a prank."

"This, this..is..amazing!" I shouted, in amazement, as Sans chuckled at my excited actions.

We were beside a waterfall that glowed a luminescent blue. Blue flowers were everywhere, even tiny mushrooms.

Looking up, sparkling gems were scattered along the sky-

No, the ceiling.

It was a scenic place that you can't hardly try to point out which is reality and not. I even tried to pinch myself if I was dreaming to tell.

"heh, it sure is." he sighed, patting the ground beside him for me to sit.

Spellbound of our surroundings, I never tore my eyes away from everything around me, it was as if I was scanning the whole place.

"Wait, are these-

"echo flowers? yup."

I leaned towards the nearby flower and it glowed brighter, sensing my touch.

'echo flowers? yup.' It repeated like a whisper.

"They do come in handy ya know, it makes me remember stuff that I might forget. Takin' some kind of reminders." He said, dangling his feet by the riverside, carelessly.

"Like what?"

His gaze wandered up while he sighed.

"the life we had in the surface. Ya know the forests, clouds...stars. Seeing these flowers reminds me about the world above, that there's more to see than..... this......"

His words gave me pity and more of it as I watch him sulk in silence.

I felt nothing but commiseration.

He isn't satisfied living with this and so might everyone else be, It's undoubtedly true if I was in their shoes.

Having limited surroundings, it's the mere fact of being contained or caged. They were trapped, somewhere near to being in prison.

Not only are they trapped, but also their sadness. They locked up their emotions and just agreed to live on with the life given to them.

Toriel...

Sans...

They both seemed happy and alright about everything, but they are actually far from it.

I noticed that their laughs, jokes and talks were just ways to conceal the sadness they felt. Similar to laughing their worries off.

All those years of living in the surface without monsters benefitted us humans but never did do to monsters down here.

Now I feel guilty for this, it was like we took their freedom from them and I know we did.

My memory is fuzzy about the details to why we humans trapped them here and my headache returns whenever I try to think hard about it.

Was it because of their power that makes them a threat to us?

Or was it because of greed for power?

Come to think of it, Can't both races share the world above?

Is sharing too much to ask?

I gave him a slight pat on the shoulder.
"Hey, Don't worry, we'll all get to see them again and I promise."

We shared a smile and it was real this time that it stretched slowly across his skull.

"heh, thanks for trying to keep my hopes up."

I hummed a 'no prob'. He emitted a yawn as he stretched his arms out and landed calmly, laying on the cold hard ground.

Copying him, I also laid on my back to get a view of the ceiling which he seems to enjoy much. I shifted uncomfortably, not used to the hard surface.

There were few patches of grass around us, but it didn't help much, so I just ignored the pain.

"sooo, why the waterfalls?"

"hmm?" he hummed, still distracted from staring above.

"Why'd you brought me here first?"

"remember the day we talked through the door?"

"Yeah? Which day was it?"

We both giggled.

"welp, I thought you should see this place first, since you wanted to see it so badly that you never stopped asking me what its like." He explained, chuckling to himself.

"It was everything you had told me."

"Thanks for taking me here, Sans, no words can express how blue-tiful this is!" I beamed, giving him an accidental hug from the adrenaline of excitement rushing within me.

"hehe..no p-problemo...al-friendo..!" He cracked some humour, coating his tensed body from my hug, so suddenly.

Hugging a skeleton wasn't the best but hugging Sans was different, he was warm to the touch. It was like I'm sitting near a fireplace or a bonfire.

"frisk...? getting too attached are w-we?" His voice wavered.

I slid my hands away from him faster than you can count and brought them close to my profusely flustered face.

"God, I'm so sorry! I just- you feel!-"

"comfy?"

'GAH! I seriously need to get this habit under control.' I screamed internally.

"i'm not a pillow but you can hug me all day, if you want. you should've asked me earlier." he winked.

"Sans..whyyy."

'If I was a tub of ice cream, I would've melted from his flirtatious attitude.'

'This guy is just impossible'

He was satisfied seeing me embarrassing myself because he cracked a few sets of his jovial chuckles.

I groaned.

When I finally recovered after a few minutes, I tried to absorb my surroundings clearly, especially the bedazzled ceiling.

'So these gems resemble as the stars in the underground...

They must've wanted to see the real stars up in the surface.

I would help them to find a way out'ta here just like I promised. I'm Determined to help them in any way I can and would.

This would be the start of a new chapter of my adventure, now that I have something to look forward to.'
