★ Chapter 38: Secrets ★

She tossed around as faint whispers of names escaped her trembling lips as she felt her small frame lying on his arms.

This nudged Sans awake as he noticed her disturbed stirring on his skeletal arms.

"geez bunny, stop taking risky actions. ya almost got yourself killed...again." Sans' deep voice soothed her as his eyes focused on her with pure seriousness.

He gently caressed her hair feeling the sudden warmth envelop Frisk's heart.

"hehe....well you...can't spell Frisk without risk, r-right?" Her voice wavery and hoarse, she coughed roughly.

Sans ignored her joke attempt though he have to admit it was pretty humorous. However, still he felt a huge pang of guilt for leaving her yet again in danger.

You see, he isn't really the type of person to worry much since he's always laid back and chill at everything, that's what people sees him in the outside but in the inside, he's clearly a different person who'd you'd least expect before you get to know him.

Because when it comes to protecting his loved ones? Its really hard to get underneath his skin, its hard to break the ice to get him off the topic.

"C'mon, lighten up, will ya? I'm fine ok, cheer up." Frisk smiled lightly tapping Sans' cheekbone, stealing one of his unconvincing lines.

The skeleton tried to smile but everything about her seems to trouble him so much. He took a deep breath and sighed as he reached for the tray of newly cooked food beside the bed.

Frisk's nose twitched, letting the sweet scent of her favourites give her enthusiasm letting a warm smile spread on her face.

"ya look kinda drained when i found you sooo...i hope this would make you feel a bit better." Frisk's appetite perked up as her insides growled fiercely.

"Thanks, its more than I needed." She took a forkful of the sliced blueberry pie before her.

Sweet and sour flavors played in her taste buds, such a perfect twist for a blueberry pie with a crisp. She thought, slowly munching the pie.

"Hmm! Its not bad! Who baked this?" She beamed, her voice muffled of all the eating. Sans, surprised of her sudden outburst of energy, chuckled a bit.

"I did, tori gave me the recipe so I uh...tried to bake it for ya." He blushed darkly, chuckling at how he didn't know how good his baking was.

This made Frisk feel a glimmer of hope upon making her companion happy amidst what had happened. She gulped the whole cold glass of lemonade with a refreshing sigh before silence between the two, followed.

"So, how's everyone? How's...Asriel....Papy..?" Frisk asked, a bit shaky of her sudden questioning.

Sans shifted uncomfortably at the last name mentioned as he tried to pry his eyes away from her.

"everyone's safe, no harm done..asriel's fine...al told me that he'll be up sooner." He patched phrase by phrase while wearing that troubled face of his.

"Is pa-"

"he's fine...comatose i'm afraid.." He admitted before Frisk could spare a few seconds.

"O-oh.."

She thought deeply, as she slowly felt regret and sadness. Her expression shifted from happy to a frown, thinking of what more consequences might've took place when she risked her life in that disastrous event.

But was it worth the sacrifice? She was able to save a friend and not just a friend but the long lost and forgotten prince of the underground. Its hard to set these questions aside for she made Sans dead worried.

A single 'cheer up' or an 'I'm fine' doesn't simply comfort Sans and she knows that.

"I'm sorry for being this stupid again....I always act all heroic....says who lay on the hospital bed." She cowered, taking all the blame for herself as she buried her face entirely onto Sans' shirt.

Sans crossed his non existent eyebrows and pulled the blanket over Frisk. "don't take it all in, alright? I can't blame you for everything that happened." He reassured as her silent tears flowed.

"But it could've cost me my life! And I can't afford to let that happen...I don't want to leave everyone like this..Especially in papyrus' current state ." She raised her voice a bit but it only sent her into coughing fits afterwards.

"All I am are mistakes...problems. Maybe.....Chara was right...None of this would've happened......If I should've saved her when I had a chance...but...I didn't
..." She quivered, a trail of tears running down her cheek.

"I'm such a c-coward...."

This shot Sans deep inside, he felt broken to see her like this but he doesn't and would never let it stay just like that.

"hey, its alright..paps wouldn't want to see you like this, right? everyone commits mistakes, whatever makes you think of that are absolutely wrong." Pacifying Frisk, he wiped the tears away.

"we would've not gone this far if it wasn't for your determination, right?"

"though this is painful, you continued ahead for the better other than giving up." Slowly careful of his words, he hugged Frisk.

" i know its hard to deal all of these things simultaneously but its better to face danger head on than to turn away from them." Frisk continued to cry silently as Sans continued to console her.

"it shows your fighting spirit of determination, it shows how you really love and admire a person, how you're willing to save the people you love, how willing you are to save your sister." He sighed as Frisk faced him, her hot tears slowly halting to a stop.

"unlike how i am to most things...that's the unique thing about you. you never stop trying to fix every problem, you never give up that easily." Sans reasoned, how much easier for Frisk to do these things other than himself with the reality of his nightmares.

"you showed me how to continue ahead, it woke me up to reality and i'm ready to take all the risks ahead to protect you." He smiled as he sent a small blush across the girl's dumbfounded face.

"remember that, aight?" He leaned onto the girl and kissed her forehead lightly.

"i'll never leave your side, that's a promise i'd keep." Grinning, he declared his promise this time around with his pinky up high.

She looks hesitantly for a while, processing everything he had said but she brushed it away and kept a smile.

"we'll both keep, ya dingus." She accepted the promise to forfeit the violated one as she immediately brought his hood down.

Abruptly, she giggled as Sans showed his all too familiar unamused face, but he laughed it off anyways.

"Haha... guess you're right. Geez, I got all dramatic again, this is what watching mettaton's drama shows gets me." She rubbed her head using her arm, wiping the tears away that trickled down her face and hair.

"ya mean I was too poetic for you to handle." He lazily grinned, bringing back the light atmosphere.

Frisk snorted and rolled her misty eyes. "I'll let that slide for now, Shakespeare."
Later, the two erupted into genuine laughter. Holding their sides as one tries to catch their breath.

"welp, my job here is done." Standing up , he said.

"i hafta attend some important business sooooo i'll check on ya later." He slipped his slippers on and shoved his hands on both sides of his hoodie.

"Business? More important than your martial duties to me...?" Frisk pouted while dragging his other arm, preventing him to go.

Sans snickered and raised his non existent brow. "martial...duty..? whaddyame-

She immediately cut his sentence by pulling him into a kiss. His eyes widened in pure shock, he was taken aback but he slowly gave in anyways till Frisk broke apart.

"I umm...uh...just...uh.. w-wanted to...thank you by giving you a g-goodbye kiss...t-that's a-a-all...." Frisk blushed furiously, avoiding eye contact with fidgety movements.

Sans chuckled with amusement and grinned mischievously.

"ya may get more than a kiss if you want~" he leaned in and whispered seductively into her ear.

"Ohmygodsans!!!" she screamed with a muffled voice on her blanket, trying to hide her cherry red face and threw him a nearby pillow just within her reach.

"heh heh, just kidding~" He winked, leaving for the door, just in time his face caught the flying pillow.

(LMAO I KENNAT xD *dies of writing the somewhat cheesy part*)

Sans left the girl blushing in different shades of red as he grinned all the way to the elevator.

He stepped right in and hit one of the dusty lit buttons inside the cold and aged elevator. Humming his favourite usual theme song as he felt the floor beneath him shaking and moving downwards.

A ping was heard as he casually walked out and headed directly for a day old bottle of ketchup by the table, as if everything was planned and is included in his daily routine.

With a snap of his fingers, his lab coat magically floated out of the coat rack and sat on his shoulders, wearing it on him.

Arriving to his final destination, a set of gliding doors opened up for him and welcomed him in a laboratory where he met Alphys, tending to a machine beside a peaceful Asriel.

"so, how's the kid doing?" He asked, approaching his presumably working table.

|| Sans' POV ||

I came over a table and started piling up dad's old journals by the side. Its not really my thing to clean up and all but eh, I need to keep a workspace clean , Especially now that he's not around.

I took this opportunity to facilitate the lab and continue researches about Frisk's power and to monitor Papyrus's condition...

"Umm..s-sans?" Al questioned, interrupting my thoughts.

"oh...hehe sorry I was zoning out...how's the kid again?"

"He's recovering, he just needs a little bit more rest." Alphys brought in less fidgety.

"oh...." I mumbled, continuing to get my work done on the desk.

"H-hey Sans" she darted her eyes everywhere and tapped my shoulder.

"I know y-you're dealing with a lot of issues ri-rght now but...." Stopping, she gave a long sigh.

"Pa-p-pyrus would be ok, I assure that." She smiled, giving me another bottle of a day old ketchup.

"thanks Al"

I grinned and opened one of the notebooks dad uses. For some reason, it has some burnt pages but I guess they're from one of his lab accidents.

"What are you doing?"

I flipped several pages, from machinery equipments to discovered potions and whew, I'm glad the page I need isn't burnt nor torn apart.

"al, do ya know where dad kept that old machine he didn't got to finish when he retired?" I asked firmly, ignoring her question.

"O-oh! Y-yes! It was in your b-basement lab before but...h-he moved it here since it takes t-too much space." She explained walking behind a stack of boxes, pulling out a big cart on wheels with a violet worn blanket draped upon the roundish figure.

"perfect" I smiled and unveiled the machine itself.

"umm...sans...you do know that attempting to fix t-that again is dangerous, r-right?? R-r-remember what ha-happened to your-

"JUST ZIP THAT THOUGHT DOWN! I DON'T WANNA HEAR THAT THING ANYMORE...." I threatened her menacingly and tried to calm myself down.

As much as I hate to fix this thing...i have to for Frisk and Papyrus...though it brings back grieving memories...

Ooooooohhhhhhhh!

I published again! Yay! xD it was kinda tricky writing this one down since I have writer's block :1

But! I suddenly thought of a bit of backstory twists ;) whoops! Spoiled it x3

So, what's this machine Sans wanted to get em up and running? What does he meant about doing this for Frisk and Papyrus? Would it be successful? And why did he got mad of Alphys all of a sudden? Is it because something disastrous happened to the person Alphys was pertaining to?

Yep, more questions! I wanted to know your theories and suggestions of what do you really think is happening.

Anyways, boi!!! Till next chappie! :3
