DAY 18
days had passed and chanmi only really spoke to minho about the project and nothing more as he was always making his way to the hospital. chanmi was not mad per say, but she was bored without her sarcastic neighbor teasing her about this and that. in her mind though, she knew he has greater things to attend to as his friend, or perhaps girlfriend, was sitting in a hospital bed recovering from whatever it was that put her there.
now she spent her days finishing her homework, watching the television, and eating. chan and jaehyun were busy with their other classes and the other boys were busy with their high school lives, so chanmi did not have anyone to really hang out with. she did always get a text checking up on her, and how she was doing while just shutting herself in her apartment, but the boys had their own lives to work on, so chanmi never complained.
at the moment, the girl was sitting on her couch wondering what she should eat for breakfast, or more like lunch since she woke up so late. suddenly, the doorbell rings and chanmi raises an eyebrow as she was not expecting anyone, but it would not be surprising if any of the boys decided to pop in without any forewarning since they all naturally assume she is never doing anything.
chanmi sighs as she gets up to open the front door, "the least you can do it give a notice that you're coming."
"well if i did then you would tell me not to come, darling," chanmi's jaw clenches as she sees her mother standing before her.
"bye," is all chanmi says before attempting to slam the door on her mother.
however, her mother was used to this and caught the door before it closed, "i'm here to take you out to eat."
"i already ate," but the grumbling of chanmi's stomach was to quick to react, "my food is just digesting now."
"chanmi please, i came all this way for you."
chanmi gives a quick glare to her mother, "did you now? or does he have a business meeting in seoul, so you decided to come over?"
"your father-"
"step father," chanmi is quick to correct her mother.
sunmi, chanmi's mother, sighs, "it wouldn't hurt to call him your father, he did take us in and buy us everything we needed to survive."
"while hiding me because he was embarrassed i'm not his own flesh and blood," chanmi keeps her hand on the door, ready to close it at an immediate notice.
"you know how vicious the business world can be; he did it all for you," sunmi tries to explain her husband's side of the story, but it was clear the girl held a deep grudge against the two.
before the conversation could go anywhere else, the elevator seemed to have stop on that floor and caused both chanmi and sunmi to look in the direction of the doors. out came minho, along with changbin, and a girl clinging onto minho's arm as if she was glued to him. minho makes eye contact with chanmi and the chanmi looks at him and the girl, who she assumed was yubin. the girl's neighbor gives her a smile and opens his mouth to say something, but chanmi was not in the mood to converse with people thanks to her mother, so she kept a straight face as she pulled sunmi into her apartment and slammed the door shut.
minho's eyes widen in surprise as changbin looks to minho, "is something up with your neighbor? her eyes kind of scared me."
"she looked like she was in a bad mood," yubin comments as she stares at the door that was just slammed.
"i don't know, but i've never seen that woman around here," minho looks at where chanmi once stood and felt off as he did not get a smile back from chanmi, but just a cold look of nothingness.
yubin tugs on minho's jacket to get his attention, "they were probably talking about something important, so you could check on her later. let's just go to your apartment and let them talk."
"yeah," minho says slowly as he pulls his keys out of his pocket, "i'm sure it's fine."
in chanmi's apartment, the girl frustratedly runs her hands over her face as she makes her way to her room. "was that your neighbor? don't you think it was rude that you didn't smile back at him?" sunmi looks around to see chanmi added no decorations to the pre furnished apartment.
"i'll have brunch with you," chanmi glances back at her mother, "save them from the troubles of hearing us sceaming and shouting at one another."
"chanmi," but before sunmi could tell the girl she was not here to cause a ruckus, chanmi closes the door to her room.
in one room chanmi tiredly changes into some presentable clothing, in the other sunmi waits for her daughter, and across the wall from them a trio share memories of what they used to be. the events of today would clearly never leave each of their minds, but for different reasons. when chanmi was done, she grabs her purse and leaves her apartment, sunmi leaving close behind as she talks about where they would be eating brunch.
as chanmi locks her door, she hears another door open, "if you want," chanmi looks over to see minho, "you can hang out with me and my friends toinght, but only if you aren't busy."
chanmi gives the boy a small smile, "thanks, i'll see if i can."
the answer was a clear "no," and the both of them knew that, but chanmi did not want to be rude to the boy and send out signals that she hated him for what was happening to her. there was no reason to be bitter to everyone around her, and chanmi knew that, but she could not help but feel irritated with the events happening to her in that moment.
as chanmi and sunmi start to make their way to the elevator, chanmi looks over to the boy, "have fun, you deserve it."
and with that, the girl disappears behind the elevator doors with her mother. a certain tension building in the hallway, but there was nothing more to do, so minho closes the door and returns to the two bickering with one another about who wore the most dark clothing in their high school days.
in the elevator, chanmi stares at her reflection in the elevator doors, "you didn't come to check up on me, so why did you come to see me."
"i came just to see my daughter," sunmi looks down at her phone to see a message.
"cut the bullshit," chanmi looks over to sunmi, "what did he want to tell me this time?"
sunmi looks over to her daughter with sad eyes, knowing the girl knew something was off about the situation, "he wants you to start seeing someone."
chanmi laughs bitterly, "why? it's not like i'm really apart of his family."
"he would accept you if you start seeing this boy." sunmi hands chanmi her phone to show the boy they were talking about.
"mark lee?" chanmi stares at his picture, "he wants to join his company with neotech, so he's trying to use me?"
"don't say it like that," sunmi pats her daughters head, but chanmi is quick to push her hand away.
chanmi looks over to her mother, "don't tell me this brunch is with him and your husband."
"i'm sorry," sunmi takes her phone back as the elevator doors open, "your father, or, step father thought of this."
an agitated feels takes over chanmi, "fine, but i don't promise anything."
"that's the spirit, darling, the personal driver is in front of the building, so let's get going. you know, i've heard mark is a very good man and, and he would treat you very kindly."
chanmi looks to the side and anwers with a voice void of any emotion, "lucky me."
