It was an era of Unenlightenment. The Dark Ages.

Tom is not meant to be alive. He does not even remember dying. A boy playing God, trying to save his own soul, pulls Tom into a world far detached from his own. Tom can't help him, Ariel can barely help Tom, but a reluctant alliance reliant on mutual aide forms between them.

A group of Death Eaters — completely disconnected from the ones Tom once knew — search for a chosen one. Someone to lift them into a new world, unfettered by corruption and darkness. If their tests are accurate, Tom might just be their hero. The only issue: their mission demands a martyr and Tom has no intention of dying.

Far from his old life, given a fresh start, Tom wants to live in peace — forever — away from the wars that have plagued his youth.

Ariel wants to die, to find peace in giving himself up for the greater good. To pluck the flame from their tyrannical enemies and bathe the world in light, no matter the cost.

Neither will get what they want.

It's the Rapture. Heroes take funny shapes when only sinners remain.

Expect many, many divergences from canon. This is not a canon compliant fic at all — there isn't even a single canon character alive (Tom doesn't count, because he's the ring & therefore not canon)

This fic takes inspiration from the Gothic (Horror) & Romanticism genres. I'd say it is those genres but I'm not confident & familiar enough with them to feel comfortable making that claim. Majority of the themes, though, are based on those
