Chapter 2 - The Golden-Eyed Devil
"How do these people not understand that they need me? They need me to rob and steal from other people or else we won't survive. We have to adapt to these horrid times. And it's not like it's totally wrong! I only steal from super rich people, not the common folk like us! Rich people like the Malotas deserve it!" Nera thought to herself as she lay in bed once again, staring up at the ceiling.
"You know what? I don't care about what those two say! I'm gonna do what's best for me and the girls and that is going out and stealing from those horrible rich people!" Nera decided to herself as she got out of bed hurriedly and went to her closet to grab something to change into.
Nera rummaged through her clothing, trying to find the perfect thing to wear to go out and not catch too much attention as she robbed others.
Then, an idea came into the young thief's mind and she said out loud, "I should go to Karvatan, the shopping district! There's so many rich, obnoxious people there. Might as well dress nice to fit in with the rest of them too."
So, Nera grabbed her one and only fancy dress, a beautiful royal blue robe and a light blue shawl. Quickly, the young girl changed and climbed out of the orphanage through the single window in her room which was behind her bed. You see, Nera didn't want to use the front door because she didn't want to get stopped by her aunts and so she left from her window. Although the window was quite high above the ground, Nera wasn't scared of heights and, carefully, climbed down the big blue orphanage and into a grimy alleyway behind it.
"Time for the fun to begin!" Nera whispered to herself, cheerful, as she walked into the main streets of Wasa.
"Time for the fun to begin!" Aditya thought to himself as he stared out of the window of the car he was being driven to Karvatan, the shopping district. He had a wide, ecstatic grin on his face and his eyes were lit up as he took in the rich houses of Wasa and all of Wasa's shops and stalls.
"This is so amazing! I bet Karvatan is even nicer," Aditya entertained this idea as they finally drove into Wasa. His guard(an ordinary Malotas soldier) opened the door for Aditya and he got out of the car as he took in what was around him.
Karvatan was packed with people. The shopping street was the most popular and expensive in all of Wasa, which was perfect for Nera. She walked through the street in a royal blue robe, a light blue shawl wrapped around her neck. Nera fit right in with the rest of the crowd, although there was one thing that made her stand out. Her golden eyes. They were like a thunderstorm of yellow with a black dot right in the middle. But Nera kept her head down, so no one noticed them.
Her day had gone by like it usually did. She stole from and robbed a couple people, taking their necklaces, watches, wallets, hair accessories, and any other expensive things she could find on them. When she had first left the orphanage, she was furious. Furious at Jaddua and Alani for thinking she couldn't handle herself and furious at herself for getting so angry at them. And, most of all, she was furious at the rich people whose lives were perfect and had no worries in their lives. You see, when she left the orphanage, she walked through the streets of Wasa. Wasa had changed greatly in the past few years. The rich had become richer and the poor had become poorer. On the streets of Wasa, Nera had observed a family. A mother, a father, a sister and a brother. They were poor, not as poor as some people on the streets, but more poor than the powerful families in Wasa. The family seemed to not have much to eat, but they had been laughing. A not-so-well-of family was happy no matter the fact that they didn't have as much money as others. They were still happy because they had one another. They had their family. Nera's heart had begun to ache, her body wanting to have what they had. The thing she wanted the most in the world more than anything was a family. A real family with a mother, a father and maybe, just maybe, a sibling. But she didn't have that and she realised she would never be able to have that. There was no point in being worked-up about something she could never have, and so her ferocity disappeared. Her day continued as usual, and she spotted her next, and most cost-worthy, victim.
It was a boy with curly dark hair who was looking at bowler hats in a hat store. He was the only one in the store, except for the owner who was helping the boy out. The boy clearly came from lavishness since he was wearing, what seemed to be, a custom tailored suit. The boy also had a golden watch, a golden chain and, best of all, a pouch full of golden coins hanging out of his back pocket. Nera looked the boy up and down, and finally, decided he was the one. She walked over, past a bunch of people and stood in line at a juice shop. Finally, once she was at the front of the line in the juice shop, she ordered herself mango juice. One of the workers made it and handed it to her as she finished paying for it with some of the stolen money she had obtained. Then, Nera walked into the hat store and pretended to look for a hat. Neither the curly-haired boy, nor the owner noticed her walking in. That was until Nera "tripped" and spilled the mango juice all over the back of the boy's tailored suit. The boy turned around in surprise and he looked his suit up and down in disgust.
"What the hell do you think you're doing, girl?!" The owner yelled angrily at Nera.
"I am so sorry! I didn't mean to do that! " Nera answered sweetly.
She started cleaning the back of the boy's suit with her light blue shawl.
"It-It's okay." The boy said, stuttering, as his body tightened up at Nera's touch. The owner of the store just stood there watching Nera clean up his suit and the young thief realised she needed him to go away somehow for her plan to work.
"Why are you just standing there? Can you get some paper towels?" Nera asked the owner, trying to get him to leave.
"Who the hell do you think are talking to me like that, young lady?" The owner snapped back at Nera.
As Nera was about to respond to him, the rich boy said, "Don't talk to her like that and she's right, get some damn paper towels!"
"Ye-Yes sir of course," The owner rushed to the back of the store, obviously embarrassed as Nera smiled slightly, still behind the boy.
Nera continued to clean the back of the boy's suit, her head bent down low. Finally, when she reached his pants, she quickly and quietly took the pouch full of coins and placed it under her shawl as she let the light blue shawl flow over herself. Nera got up and "shamefully" looked down at the boy's fancy shoes.
"I am so, very sorry, sir. I tried to clean it as much as I possibly could."
The boy smiled appreciatively and said, "It's okay. Really!"
He could not see the bag of coins in Nera's possession, since it was covered by her shawl. "Thank you sir, you're very kind." Nera bowed her head, when the owner came back.
"Is it all clean?" The owner asked. "Yes it is all clean thanks to this kind ma'am," The boy spoke, kindly.
Nera bowed her head, thankfully, once again.
"Well then, would you like to look at some more bowler hats?"
The boy blinked a couple times and then shook his head, making his curly hair go everywhere. "Well, what about sun hats or top hats or bucket hats?" The owner asked, starting to get desperate
"No, I don't want to look at those either. As a matter of fact, I think I've had enough of all these hats for today." The boy started walking away as the owner desperately looked after him.
"But sir! I have other hats too! Floppy hats! Flat hats! Any hats! Sir!" The owner yelled after the boy, but he kept walking.
Nera turned and walked in the opposite direction of the boy down the street of Karvatan. They both could hear the owner calling after them, but they ignored him.
Finally the boy, Aditya, stopped and turned around to say, "Thank you," to Nera again. But, when he saw her, he stopped. The sun was gleaming at Nera, making her whole face glow with light, especially her eyes. Her beautiful deadly golden eyes. The ones who had robbed and hurt the people of Wasa.
