Deduction
"Hannibal really shows how clever psychopaths really are," Clara spoke up as Clarice ended her first meeting with Hannibal Lector in the film.
"How the fuck would you know if their clever or not. You met any?" Marshall asked glancing over at her for next to him. She'd found a furry blanket that he hadn't known he even had until she pulled it out from behind his own couch. She was snuggled under the blanket and her hand only crept out to grab a handful of popcorn from the bowl placed next to them both.
"Maybe. Then again I did say you gotta chose what you want to believe when it comes to me anyway," of course she had met a few a few extremely clever ones that nearly caused the end of her. However, there was no way she was going to tell him that because it was something a 'previous secretary,' probably wouldn't have come across in previous employment.
"Right yeah I remember," Marshall mumbled in response shovelling a handful of popcorn into his mouth as they both turned their attention back to the film.
Most of the rest of the film was watched in silence, only the rustling of popcorn and Clara shifting in her blanket pierced the air. They had come to the point in the film where Hannibal was about to make his escape from the little cell he had been given. The second Lector leapt at the guard's face with his mouth a sudden loud rattling knock was heard from the front door. The sound echoed throughout the house, making it impossible to ignore.
"Who the fuck could that be," Marshall ground out reaching for the remote to pause the film.
Clara meanwhile just huffed reaching into the plastic bowl for more popcorn and was disappointed when there were only little-broken bits left at the bottom. Since Marshall had gone to answer the door and the film was paused she decided to go and look around the kitchen to see if he had another packet or anything else they could snack on as there was still a portion of the film left. However, she stopped in her tracks when she heard a woman's voice coming from down the hallway and decided to stay in the room in a position so she could hear what was being said.
"The girls were worried Marshall it's all over the news," the word girls gave it away as Kim because she was the only person Clara guessed would come around so late at night just to talk to Marshall. She was also aware that it was because of what had happened at the event that night because it would have been the only thing in the news about Marshall.
"I'm fine you guys didn't need to worry," Clara could help the smile that fell across her face as she heard various other voiced which belonged to his daughters.
It was when it went silent that she couldn't help but poke her head around the door a little and what she saw melted her heart, all three girls had enveloped him in a hug. She waited a little longer before ducking her head back around the door as not to be seen. Unfortunately, she left it a little too late because a little voice very clearly squealed her name in delight. The voice belonged to Whitney of course and the moment it was said all eyes turned to look down the hallway, meaning Clara had no choice, but to come out from her hiding place. Once she was in full view of everyone Whitney ran up to give her a hug. At least someone was happy to see her.
"Um hi," she greeted, accompanied by a small awkward wave, which Hailie returned; something she had not been expecting to happen.
"Girls why don't you go wait in the car it's clear your father is more than fine," all three of them obeyed, not before each one of them gave Clara a parting wave and their dad another hug, "Marshall I didn't know you had a friend that just so happens to be a female," Kim pointed out the moment the girls had left.
"I'm actually his assistant, but good job only getting the female part right," Clara shot back before Marshall had even parted his lips to speak.
"Really what have you been assisting him with because last time I checked he's never had an assistant," Kim bit back.
"Stop assuming shit for fuck's sake she really is my assistant Paul hired me one so just shut up with all the snarky comments," Marshall ground out the last part directed quite clearly to both women.
"Right sorry. Look I better get going it's late and the girls need to get home, it was only meant to be a quick stop because well as soon as we saw the news Hailie and Whit were most insistent," Kim explained.
"You only stopped because it was one your way back from where you had been out all day," the words left Clara's mouth before she could stop them.
"Excuse me?"
"Well, you see it is a little late night for all of you to be fully dressed especially Whitney because she's only what eight?" Kim nodded slowly as Clara continued, "and by judging by the mud on your shoes it shows you've only just left because the mud on them hasn't dried up yet and it can't be from Marshall's driveway because it's made of gravel. So you only stopped by because it was on the way home. I'm guessing if you were at home and heard the news you would have just rung," Clara finished her explanation. She knew it was a bit strange that she had just broken down Kim's actions to her and Marshall, but she couldn't help herself.
"Ok, now I believe she's your assistant. She's far too clever," Kim commented before turning to leave, but Marshall stopped her.
"What do you mean by that 'she's far too clever,'," Marshall mocked her voice as he glared at her.
"Come on of all the girlfriends I've seen you have, haven't really stood out in the brain department," Kim decided after that comment it was time for her to leave as Marshall's eyes seemed to burn holes in her.
"Well, at least she went from insulting me to calling me clever. I'm counting that as a good first interaction," Clara spoke up coming up behind him and gently touching him on the solider to get him to move away from his position in front of the door.
"Who the fuck are you. No, don't let me finish" Clara clamped her mouth tightly shut as he pointed a finger at her, basically telling her to shut up, "no normal person would be able to figure out whether they'd been out or had come straight from home. Oh my god, you were right," Clara took a precautionary step backwards away from him as he stepped closer to her.
"Right about what?" She asked not fully sure what wavelength he was on.
"You met a psychopath and it's you," Marshall's face fell as Clara snorted and started full on laughing at what he had just said to her.
"Oh that was a good one," Clara was doubled over clutching her stomach as the laughter continued to bubble up inside of her.
"There's no other explanation. You know so much about everything, that guy's name from tonight, I wouldn't have noticed the name written in his jacket or then there's tonight, the only detail you didn't get was where they had come from. Also, that quick reaction thingy and the way you say perfectly normal things in ways I can't even understand."
"Ok all valid points," Clara breathed out once she'd recovered from her laughing fit, "but I'm not a psychopath. I just see things differently from the way you see them. It also doesn't make me clever or others stupid. I'm just different. Ok," she explained.
"Yeah, I got it. Can we finish the movie now?" He asked and Clara breathed a sigh of relief glad that the explanation was enough and thankful he didn't pry anymore.
"Yeah, but you got any more popcorn?" This time Marshall laughed diverting into the kitchen to hunt for more, shaking his head as he did so.
