Chapter 9

I landed in the space Alex and the others called a parking lot still smelling faintly of meat from a few suns agp. I looked around at the cars there but there was something different this time.

A lot of them looked strange, the bottom parts were being held up by some sort of stand and all of those rubbery things that let the car move around were gone. A few of them had their heads open and others were stripped of everything it seems. With only their bones of metal left behind.

I looked up and saw that it was already getting dark, but that did seem to mean less humans were around in their 'cars' so I didn't need to worry about getting hit, shot, or destroying anything accidentally.

I walked away from the parking lot and onto the black stuff on the ground that the 'cars' seemed to like going on. There were larger black things on those raised platforms that more cars seemed to go on, but I didn't want to risk those as they seemed to have a lot more on them, even nearing moon rise.

I walked around for a second, looking at the human buildings that lined the edges of the street. There were cars lining both sides of the street and then I came to a path that split left right and kept on going straight. I looked up at the blinking yellow light hanging off of a thin wire and wondered what it was.

All it took as a slight jump and I was able to grab the yellow blinking light thing and bring it down with me, but the thin black things that it was connected to didn't seem to want to let it go.

I let the earth take me back to the ground hoping that the thin black thing would give up and let me have the blinking box, but it wouldn't let go. So I cut it, the black line seemed to shudder for a moment before a loud snapping sound rang in my head and the pole along with the black line went flying back to the way they had been and kept on going where they crushed a car and finally went still, but then the car started to make sound and lights from the human buildings started turning on.

I looked at the box in my claws and saw that it wasn't blinking yellow anymore. What? I tilted and turned it a few times to see what has gone wrong and all that was there were two cut off black things attached to the back of it. Was that what killed it? Why was it blinking before, but not now?

I dropped it on the ground as a door opened and when I took a step forwards the car noises and the sounds around me stopped. I quickly went around the corner where I stopped and crouched behind a car that wasn't making noise.

The noises started again and I saw several humans walk out from their houses. There was a bigger house further down the path that I had gone to and I had to move again as human children started to come out. Some looked older and more like the adults, but most were little and looked scared as they looked around in the dark.

I lept up, causing the sounds to stop and everyone to freeze as I dug my claws into the he stone of a building and with another push of my legs I was now on the top of the building. It was flat and seemed to be a nice place to sleep, cold, but there was no machine anywhere in sight, but I wanted to see what the humans would do before I went to sleep here.

I went over to the side as the noises started again and the humans moved faster and peeked over the side to watch the human children and mid adults to see what they were going to do. The older ones went over to the broken light thing and the crushed cars before looking around, the littler ones stayed at the building and looked around frantically.

I saw one of the older humans look at me with glowing eyes and they looked surprised for a moment. I didn't wait for them to tell the other humans that I was here before letting everything freeze once again and gliding over to the bigger building, it had four little platforms that were raised above the slanted roof of the house. So I landed on the one closest me and looked over to see if the human had noticed, and when everyone unfroze the person looked around in confusion for a moment before raising their shoulders strangely and coming back to where the littler ones were standing.

I watched the older ones say something to the littler ones to calm them down and then they all went into the building below me. I lay down in the spot that I was in and closed my eyes for the night. Tomorrow I was going to find Lilly and maybe I would get to stay on her roof without any humans noticing.

I found that sleeping without something around me made me feel very strange inside and I was always thinking something would come out and scare me. I eventually was able to close my eyes after the feeling went away and I realized that nothing was going to come for me, or see me and I closed my eyes.

Then something yelped from behind me and I shot up and turned around, my tail cut through the square stone things that were sticking up from the top of the platform and I got into a low stance, ready for anything that came to attack me. Nothing came. Eventually my curiosity won and I peeked over the edge of the risen platform that I was on and looked down.

There was a human girl standing on the edge of the raised platform that I was on, and she was gripping the sides so hard it seemed like the stone was going to crack under the pressure.

"They just had to dare me, they couldn't just play a game to see who had to check. Nooo they dared me knowing that I wouldn't be able to resist and now I am going to..." she looked up and saw my looking at her, and screamed.

Her feet lost their footing on the little edge that she was standing on and I watched as she started to slide down, but as soon as I moved she froze and I was standing in front of her with my legs dug into the roof and my side bared to her because I didn't want her to hit my maw and me accidentally react badly towards the sudden action.

She started moving again as soon as I stopped and her body ran into my side and she let out a high pitched sound of surprise.

"Is human girl pained?" I asked and she seemed unable to hear me because she just held onto my side like it was a chain or something. I grabbed her with my tail and looked around for a moment, where did she come from. There wasn't a window by the raised platform, so did she climb up here from somewhere else.

I looked over the edge of the building and saw an open window with the scent of three males and two females coming from it. So I turned around, slowly let her down until I assumed that it was the length needed and pushed forwards. Nothing met my tail or pushed up against the humans so I guessed right!

It felt warmer around the part that I was holding the female human at and when I dropped her she didn't scream. Well she did, but it wasn't for a long time, so I retreated and went back to my platform that I wanted to sleep on.

"Wait Mr. Dragon" a little voice said and I cocked my head. The voice came from the window that I had put the other human back through and it didn't sound like one of the others was talking. I turned around and looked down to see a little head poking out from the window and her scent was strange.

She smelled of blood, constant never ending blood, but it was also a little vanilla and I didn't know what to understand from it. I cocked my head at her and waited for her to say something.

"Isn't it cold out there?" She asked and I shook my head, it wasn't as cold as the cold season was so I was fine with it. "Please come in Mr. Dragon. I don't want you to die out there alone." She said and I was confused. I couldn't die, why would she want me to come in? What about the others around her?

"Don't worry, none of them are going to do anything to you" she said, "if they do they know what'll happen" she seemed to know that the others wouldn't do anything, and it didn't matter if they did anyways. I could run away at any time if they tried something.

I climbed down the building, digging into the stone with my claws to make sure that the earth didn't claim me again and make me fall off of the building. I reached the area where the girl was and looked at her, she wasn't wary of me at all, she seemed like she was excited for some reason.

"What do you want to do?" I asked her and her mouth fell open, "what's wrong?"

"Y-you can speak?" She gasped and I tilted my head at her fish like actions.

"Yeah. It was hard for a little bit but I learnt how to speak your tongue" I said and tilted my head at her.

"Cool!" She yelled and I dug my claws further into the building's stone at the sudden increase in noise. "Oh Mr. Drag—wait you sound around the same age as me and some of my sisters. How old are you?" I tilted my head at her strange actions and thought for a second.

"Close to eight seasons this 'Winter'" I said proudly and she gasped for some reason.

"You are the same age as me" she said and then she was grabbed from behind and pulled back.

"Elena don't go doing that" a male voice sounded and I stepped down further and peeked in curiously to see one of the male close-adults shaking her shoulders.

"Why not? He hasn't eaten me yet" she said and I tilted my head at that.

"Why would I eat you?" I asked and came down a little further to see them a little clearer. "You don't smell like Red Squishy stuff, well you do, but you smell too weird to eat" I said and the older kids didn't seem to take that well because they just stepped in front of Elena. I tilted my head at this strange behavior but didn't move from my spot.

"See he's not going to eat us, and he's the same age as me so it would be weird if he ate you guys. Your older than him by lots" Elena said and I tilted my head at her as she stepped out from behind the older kid and towards me. Out of reach of the older kids, and right by my face. "Can we please let him in, his eyes are so pretty and it's so cold outside. A reptile shouldn't be in the cold, it's bad for them."

The older ones looked at each other and then nodded and Elena took that as a chance to turn towards me and I tilted my head.

"See you can come in" she said and I took her words to be true, everything around froze as I started moving, her smile was the only real thing that I noticed as I carefully climbed into the room. Careful not to stretch or break the glass with my claws and spines.

I stepped on the window then hopped over Elena and looked around for a second. The room that all of the kids were was big. It had cloth covered wooden skeletons with strange fluffy things on the tops of them and they went from one side of the room to the other with windows every half length of my body.

I went over to a lone kid with black hair and looked at what he was holding in his hands. It seemed to be some sort of paper box that had folding faces and backs and black markings scribbled all over each.

Everything un-froze as I sat down and watched as the kid turned the right side of the paper and flipped it over to the other side. I wanted to do that too.

I reached around and poked at a page trying to turn it over, and the kid grabbed my claw and held it away from the book.

"Stop touching my things Ashley" the human grumbled and I tilted my head at this strange behavior and used my other arm to try and reach the block of paper in the person's hands.

"I swear, Ashley if you don't stop I'm going to-" the kid looked up and at a girl that was standing there shocked. She had brown hair that was half the length of her body and Cloudy eyes that looked like rain clouds just before rain.

"U-um" the boy stuttered looking at the my claw and then at the girl again, "if you over there, then that means..." the boy looked over at me and fell off of the wooden structure.

I grabbed the block of paper and black markings as it fell and turned it around. The front was filled with color and seemed to have a picture of a creature like me, but with a human attached to the back. I growled in disgust and turned the book over to see what the white lines along the back were.

They seemed to be letters of some sort, but I wasn't able to understand what they said. I could kind of read the letters of The Bed and The Machine under The Bed but I didn't understand what they meant and I couldn't ask unless I was told I could.

"What is this?" I asked looking at the black haired human on the floor looking at me with surprise, or was that confusion. Both? I didn't really care at the moment, I was holding something rare and I could ask anything I wanted to now without fearing The Bed or burning inside from something Pain came with.

"It's called a book" the boy said and I looked at the 'book' curiously. "What is it for?" I held up the block of paper and strange smelling stuff and looked at the human again as he stood up.

"I don't really know" he said trying to grab for it but I moved away, this was mine now. I wanted and I wanted to figure out what it was for, "I read it because it's fun"

"Oh entertainment" I said looking at the small thing in my claws. This tiny thing was human entertainment? I went to turn the page with my claw when the human yelled out suddenly.

"No don't do that" he lept towards me over the cloth covered wooden skeleton and I just hopped over the one behind me and looked at him, confused.

"Why not?" I asked and went to turn the page again but was stopped as he tried to hop across and grab the book again, I hopped across several cloth covered wooden skeleton things this time and the human sighed in irritation.

"Don't you have something, not sharp?" He said, "I don't want to ruin the pages." I thought for a second, something not sharp?

I lifted my claws, and he shook his head.

"Very sharp"

I lifted my tail and he paused for a second before shaking his head again

"Still looks sharp, so no"

I was about to open my mouth and show my teeth when something flashed and I jumped back and avoided a black blur speeding underneath me.

The human looked up as they passed underneath me with an expression of shock. It was the black haired human! He tried to take book from me again by trying to surprise me!

I landed on the ground again and the black blur turned back towards me, so I took a step and everything around me froze.

I walked behind the black blur, and put the book in the little pocket behind his head. If human wanted book back, fine, I didn't want to kill the humans and I don't think Alex or the others would like it if I gave them pain in any ways either.

When I stopped everything started again and the black blur that was the one kid started forwards again, but a few cloth covered platforms away he stopped and the book that was being his head launched forwards and forced him to the ground face-first.

Suddenly I heard a roaring sound behind me that caused me to ready myself for an attack as I quickly turned around, but I found that the roaring wasn't an enemy but rather the other humans behind me.

They were all crying and some of them were rolling on the ground, but almost all of them were roaring loudly. But it wasn't pain, or hostility, so why were they like that.

"Stop laughing at me" the black haired one that was chasing after me for the book yelled as he jumped to his feet. "It's not fair, the dragon cheated, he must've." I cocked my head at the boy and he just crumbled and walked back to his platform and opened the book once again while the others kept on roaring and rolling around.
