Everyone talks about the shootings and disasters and crazy idiots in the US, but I wanted to share a story that happened in my little country that most of the people reading don't know about.
Costa Rica (as far as I know) is known for being calm and safe. And I thought it was calm and safe until one day in class I get a text from my dad saying "don't worry honey, your mom wasn't close to the school when it happened." I was confused at first, I mean, nothing ever happens, why would I be worried? So I grab my school ipad and search for an online newspaper. What do I find? There was a shooting in front of a school that is 500 meters from where I live. In front of the school I pass every morning on my way to school (here we don't have school districts and stuff like that). I read through the article to see when it had been.
On the mornings, because there are so many cars, I have to be out of the house by 6:40. But that morning I was late, I got out of the house at 6:50. For the first time in the three years I have been living in my house there were almost no cars in front of that school. Normally it's full of idiot parents who park in the middle of the road, but not that morning. And I was lucky that day, because at 6:55 am two men arrived in front of the school and started shooting.
Seventeen bullets came out from their guns, a little girl I know counted them. Some of them hit their target and his body guard, another one hit a first grade boy.
And you know what happened to this little boy? He spent a week in the hospital because a bullet hit him and then he was hit by the car those two idiots were trying to shoot. An innocent boy was shot, how could this happen?
The two men who died weren't innocent either. One of them was a drug dealer, I found out recently that there's a lot of those in my town.
But he had a daughter, a daughter who is six years old and has nothing to do with the crap her father was in yet she had to endure the pain of losing him and being in the car where he died and having to now become yhe girl with the drug dealer dad who got killed outside school. How can a six year old girl live with the pain knowing her father died after he dropped her off? How can she live her life knowing her dad was a bad man? That he was such a bad man people would kill him for it.
Fun fact, that man was in the same plane as my mom when we came back from a trip to Virginia.
Another fun fact, the parents from the school knew about his man being a bad man. And they didn't say anything. I get it, they were scared. There are people saying that whenever a parent honked their horn at him for being in the way he'd get out of the car and show them his gun. I can't imagine the fear of that happening. But still, how can those people too live with the guilt of knowing they could have prevented that from happening? At least, preventing it from happening at a school.
As I think about all of this I ask myself over and over again. How is it possible that the crazy are free and the sain are in cells?
How is it possible that a person has so much freedom that they can kill two people and run away?
How is it possible that two families are getting news that a person died IN FRONT OF A SCHOOL?
How is it possible that a little kid is at the hospital because someone just woke up that morning and made the choice to shoot people in front of the school?
And how is it possible that the bad is seen as normal and the good is seen as bad?
The last question really hits me hard because it's the truth. Yes, this is the world we live in. It's full of sociopaths, bad people, crazy people... And we can do nothing about it, or so we think.
We live in a world where hate rules and love drools, and that's wrong. Love can deafeat hate, it always has and always win. But love can't happen by itself.
We stand there, in front of out tvs, our phones, computets, tablets looking at the news, crying and wondering how the heck did we turn something damn beautiful into a war zone? Because that's what we did in case you didn't notice.
And it kills me to know that people are free to do whatever they want, they can go freely with their knives and guns and cars and kill whoever they want.
Those people are scary, I get it. No wonder they haven't been all put in jail, the scare the crap out of everybody. But we can't let those people stop us from doing what we humans were made to do, love.
I was told a year ago that humans were made with two purposes, to love and be loved. So let's live up to that and spread love everywhere. Love is the solution to our problems. It's right there in front of us yet we are so blind to see it.
So lets do this. The bad can't win, not this time. They don't deserve to win, good does. So lets do what most humans are taught since we are little a love. Spread love and happines everywhere you go.
Because just like bad attitud is contagious, so is good attitude. If you were to act happy and kind in the street so would most people who see you. It's just that simple.
So person who's reading this, I have a task for you. For a whole day smile politely to everyone you see, it doesn't matter if you know them or not, just do it. Please, its a simple as that.
We may not be able to change the world and we may not be able to heal the mentally sick people who do these terrible things, but we may spread love, happiness and kindness and that is all we need. To change a little bit by little, that's all it takes for a big change. Trust me.
