THE NIGHT of the annual Christmas ball has come. Everyone in Clark High—excluding Loki—is looking forward to such event. Well it was already expected. It's him after all. He doesn't seem to delight himself with this kind of stuff.

Nasa loob kami ng apartment kasama sina Al at Jamie. Those two were also thrilled for the said event. We were gathered here para pag-usapan kung anong magiging paghahanda para mamaya. Apparently, hindi na naman kailangan ng ganitong set up. We can individually prepare ourselves for tonight. Yet, may isang nag-suggest ng meeting na 'to. Guess who?

Yeah. It's Jamie.

Si Al prenteng nakaupo lang sa couch while having his cup of coffee. 9:00 palang din kasi ng umaga. In fact, this gathering was uncalled for. Biglaan nalang pumunta si Jamie dito bandang alas otso at binulabog kami sa pamamagitan ng isang sigaw.

Akala namin may krimeng naganap sa mismong apartment na tinitirahan namin yun pala siya lang 'yun. Nakakahiya tuloy sa ibang tenants.

Pagkatapos ng eskandalong 'yun, tinawagan niya si Al at sinabihan na pumunta rito. Nagmamadaling umalis si Al nun kaya hindi na rin siya nakapag-almusal.

Noon ngang tinawagan si Al, bagong gising palang 'to kaya hindi pa pumayag noong una. However, thanks to Jamie's acting skills, she cried for his help saying that I was abducted and Loki's nowhere to be found. Kaya naman pagkadating na pagkadating ni Al dito ay may halong pagkadismaya ang mukha niya. He should've known that Jamie will resort to such things.

Kaya ayun, nakakunot pa din ang noo ni Al habang nakatingin kay Jamie—na dikit na naman nang dikit kay Loki. Does she still see the resemblance of her late brother in him? Or she really is just seducing Loki over and over again? Meh. I don't care anyways.

I was still in the middle of observing them when someone broke the silence.

"So, let's talk about the pairings." A sweet smile was plastered on her face. Halata mong may binabalak na naman siya and based on her given topic alam ko na kung saan mapupunta ang usapang 'to.

Everyone remained silent making it kinda awkward for all of us. But still, Jamie kept on talking.

"Obviously, I'll go with Loki dear while Lorelei's gonna be with Al. So... the color of our attires should be just the same as our partner's since 'yun di ang instructions ng mga teachers natin." Sabi na e. Doon lang mapupunta ang usapan. Pwede namang i-text niya nalang sa 'min 'yung pairings. Alam na din naman namin 'yung tungkol sa ternong damit ng partners kasi nga nasabihan na din kami ng mga teachers namin.

"By the way Loki, do you have plans before the party? Kung wala samahan mo nalang akong mamili ng mga damit." She said while clinging unto Loki's arms. Sinuklian lang siya ni Loki ng walang ka-emo-emosyong pagtango.

I knew it. This meeting has another hidden agenda. It is for Jamie to be with Loki throughout the day.

Umalis na 'yung dalawa leaving me and Al here alone. Speaking of Al...

"Hey Al. Anong kulay ng damit..." I was about to ask him about our attires. But he already fell in deep slumber. Antok pa siguro talaga siya. Ano kayang ginawa niyan kagabi?

Nilagyan ko nalang siya ng kumot at binigyan ng unan para naman makatulog siya ng ayos.

Iniwan ko na si Al dun at naligo na. Mamimili pa din ako e. Siguro isasabay ko na si Al para terno pa din kami. This is surely gonna be a long day.

As I was on my way to the mall, na-stuck pa ko sa traffic. Ang init init pa man din. Buti sana kung may kotse ako kaso wala e. 'Yung meron namang kotse ayun tulog pa din hanggang ngayon.

30 minutes after, nakarating na din ako sa mall. Titingin sana ako sa isang department nang biglang may nahagip ang mga mata ko.

Is that Loki and Jamie? It's not that impossible because this was the nearest mall in our vicinity. Pero ang nakakapagtaka, bakit merong mga pulis at iba pang mga tao. What just happened?

To my curiosity, lumapit ako sa kanila. Saktong paglapit ko ay binati agad ako ni Jamie at nakipagbeso-beso pa. She's really good at these things, isn't she?

Si Loki naman ay busy kausap ang mga police officers. No doubt, he truly is a crime magnet.

"Anong nangyari dito?" Tanong ko sa kanya while examining the place. This is an accessories store and I suppose that the prices here are quite expensive.

"May nakawan na naganap. Good thing I remembered the faces of the people that went inside this section of the mall." May halong pagmamayabang sa tono niya. She should've build her own furniture shop.

"Then?" I asked vaguely. I have no time for her boastings.

"By the help of my retentive memory and Loki's talent in deduction, we caught the culprit. Aren't WE great?" Her lips formed a naughty smile. I also noticed the sudden stress on the word 'we'. Is she implying something?

"It was nice knowing that the two of you solved another case. By the way, I need to go."

Umalis na 'ko dahil baka mapuno ako kay Jamie at magkaroon ng panibagong crime scene sa mall.

After two hours, nakahanap na din ako ng pwedeng suotin naming ni Al. Mine's a black dress designed with navy blue sequins. Maganda ang pagkakagawa sa kanya. Sa harapan hanggang tuhod lang 'yung dress pero pagdating sa likod nagmistulang bridal gown ito dahil sa haba ng tela. Pinartner-an ko ito ng 3 inch heels na color black.

While the one I bought for Al is a navy blue long sleeved polo which will be underneath a black coat. Bumili na din ako ng black slacks para pang-terno sa suot niya.

Now we're all set. I wonder how those other two are doing. Maybe they already bought their outfits as well.

Pagkauwi na pagkauwi ay wala na din si Al doon. Pa'no 'tong damit niya? Sana dumaan siya dito mamaya.

Tutulog nalang muna siguro ako. Dumiretso ako sa kama at humiga. Tinignan ko ang orasan. 2:00 palang naman. I still have 4 hours before the party. Slowly and slowly, Hypnos already cradled me to sleep.

Pagkagising ko, para akong nabuhusan ng malamig na tubig. 5:30 na! I've been asleep for 3 and a half hours.

"Where are you Lorelei?"

"Sorry. I overslept. Kasama mo na ba sina Loki?"

"Si Loki pa lang. Wala pa din si Jamie. Dumaan ako diyan kanina but no one answered me so I thought you already left."

"Pasensya na talaga Al. Pero paano pala 'yung damit mo?" Tanong ko rito. Kung saan ko kasi iniwan 'yung damit na binili ko para sa kanya ay doon ko pa din s'ya nakita.

"Don't worry. I bought my own." Have I even told him the color of the dress that I bought?

"Sige sige."

Ibaba ko na sana nang may biglang nakisingit sa kabilang linya.

"Hurry up Sleepy head. The program's about to start." It's Loki.

Hindi na 'ko sumagot pa at binabaan na si Al. Pumara na din ako ng tricycle at sumakay dito para mabilis na makarating sa Clark High.

Pagdating ko doon, si Jamie ang una kong nakita. Kakarating niya lang din siguro kasi hawak hawak niya pa 'yung ticket niya e.

She was wearing an autumn velvet red dress. Hindi gaya noong suot niya sa party ni Dad, may pagka-conservative siya ngayon. It was a long sleeved dress paired with a red choker.

Bukod pa dun, her hair wasn't braided nor straightened. Nakapuyod ang buhok niya establishing the perfect structure of her face. She looks like a Goddess to me... only wicked.

Before I end up fantasizing her—which would be the last thing on Earth that I'd do—lumapit ako dito at tinawag siya. She seemed surprise to see me. Akala niya siguro nauna na ako.

"Bakit ngayon ka lang din?" Tanong ko dito.

"It's a long story. But to make it short, nagkahiwalay kami ni Loki at 'di na uli nagkita. So I decided to go home. Mga bandang 4:00 na din 'yun." Nagkahiwalay sila? So it means hindi rin nila napag-usapan 'yung susuotin nila?

Binigay na namin 'yung ticket sa guard at pumasok na sa gate ng school namin. Nakakamangha 'yung design na ginawa sa school. Ang classy at elegante niyang tignan.

Pagkapasok na pagkapasok namin ni Jamie, hinanap agad ng mga mata ko sina Loki at Al. Saan kaya sila nakapwesto?

Pumunta kami ni Jamie sa iba't ibang table pero wala talaga sila. We were about to lose hope nang may biglang tumawag sa 'min.

"Lorelei. Over here."

Si Alistair 'yun ah. Nilingon ko 'yung direksyon kung saan nanggaling 'yung tawag. Pagkalingon na pagkalingon namin, our—Jamie and I—jaws instantly dropped leaving both of us speechless. I swear this isn't destiny's work or what-so-ever.

Al was wearing a velvet red polo underneath a black coat while on the other hand Loki was wearing the same color of my attire which was navy blue.

"What in the world is this Loki? I told you ours is velvet." Jamie started complaining as she was also startled of the unexpected events.

"I thought we both agreed at the color blue." May halong pagkagulat na sabi ni Loki. Pero syempre he still maintained his cold aura.

"I can't believe this." Jamie blurted disappointingly. Paanong hindi? Eh dapat magka-terno ang suot na damit ng magkapartner. But in our case we could only do one thing—to change partners.

Tinignan ko si Al at tulad namin, may halong pagtataka din sa kanyang mga mukha. He also mouthed the words "I texted you."

Tinignan ko 'yung phone at nakita ko 'yung text niya. He sent me two messages. Una, tinatanong niya kung anong kulay ng susuotin namin. The next message says that he bought a polo with a velvet color because he knew that I was fond of this color. But this time he got it wrong.

In the end, we swapped partners kahit na sobrang labag sa loob ni Jamie. May halong pagbabanta nga din ang tono niya nung pumayag siya. Parang sinasabi niyang sa kanya lang talaga si Loki.

The program started eventually. Nagkaroon ng welcome remarks ang head ng Clark High. Sinundan naman ito ng speech ng Student Council President. If I know, Luthor composed the speech and just used the president as a medium of communicating the message to us.

Pagkatapos ng speech, nagkaroon ng iba't ibang intermission numbers ang selected Clark students hanggang sa natapos na 'yung mismong program.

At last... The most awaited part of the ball has started. Since he was my partner, siya ang naging first dance ko.

Nang magsimula ng tumugtog ang kanta ay pinatong ko ang mga kamay ko sa balikat ni Loki habang siya naman ay nakahawak sa baywang ko. We swayed to the tune of 'Can't Help Falling In Love by Elvis Presley'. It has such a sweet melody, very suited for this kind of dances.

Silence got in between us when he suddenly broke it.

"If this was a romance novel, I would've considered the unforeseen changes as a work of destiny or fate. But unfortunately Lorelei, this is reality and I don't believe in such things." Panimula nito.

"So your point is?"

"This is just a mere coincidence due to human errors—just like mine as I forgot what color we had agreed on and for you, not telling Al the color that you chose." Paliwanag nito. What was his point anyways? I never assumed that it was destiny or fate after all.

"How it sucks to be you. Scientifically, explaining everything."

"Then don't be me." He just impassively said while staring at me with those dull black eyes.

Natapos na 'yung kanta at nagpalit na kami ng partners. Ako kay Al. Si Jamie kay Loki.

I looked at the two of them and Jamie is really enjoying Loki's company. Kung ako nakapatong lang 'yung kamay ko sa balikat niya, 'yung isa naman todo yakap kay Loki habang nagsasayaw. Buti hindi umaangal si Loki. I was eyeing the two of them when someone forced a cough.

"Can I have your full attention, Lorelei?" I just rolled my eyes at him as he gave off a teasing smile. I know what he meant by that.

I placed my hands at Al's nape habang siya naman ay nakayakap sa may beywang ko. It's just like the other pair's position but a little less intimate of course. Wala namang malisya 'to kasi he is just my childhood friend. We're always comfortable with each other.

Habang nagsasayaw na kami ni Al, tumugtog 'yung kantang 'Lucky' kaya medyo napatungo kaming dalawa. As soon as the song had finished, we finally met our gaze again and laughed so hard kasi pulang pula kami pareho.

Naramdaman ko din ang pagtigil ng dalawa sa pagsayaw kanina. Bigla nalang kasing umalis si Loki at iniwan si Jamie. Pero may iba na namang kasayaw uli si Jamie. Sigurado namang buong gabi siyang magsasayaw. Look at the number of guys who adore her. It's too many to mention.

After dancing with Al, medyo sumakit ang paa ko kaya napagdesisyunan kong umupo nalang muna.

Habang nasa may table ako, palinga-linga ako sa paligid but unfortunately there were no signs of him. Sa'n na naman kaya siya nagpupupunta?

I just rested here at our seats habang nakatingin kina Jamie at Al na may ibang mga kasayaw. Buti nalang wala ng ibang nag-yaya sa 'kin kasi masakit pa din paa ko... err... scratch that. Someone's approaching towards my direction.

Kung dati rati, just by his presence, I can feel the chills over my spines, ngayon wala na masyado. Siguro dahil din 'to sa nangyaring hostage-taking sa gymnasium.

"Would you care to dance?" Sabi ni Luthor habang inilahad ang isang kamay niya sa harapan ko.

Akmang tatayo na sana ako upang makipagsayaw sa kanya nang may biglang sumigaw.

Kyaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Naudlot ang kasiyahan ng lahat dahil dito. Agad kaming pumunta ni Luthor doon at nakita ang isang babae na puno ng dugo ang kamay. Mapapansin din ang basag na piraso ng isang aquamarine glass sa tapat nito. Katabi nun ay isang gift wrapper na sira na dahil sa pagkakabukas dito.

"What happened here?" He asked the girl wearing a simple white dress that was already stained by her blood.

"Margarette. Kindly call someone to cure this girl." His brother spoke with authority kaya agad din siyang sinunod ni Margarette.

"S-Someone...g-gave me an aq-aquamarine gla-glass... so I tried to threw it away... and I end-ended up hurting my-myself." Pahikbi hikbi nitong sabi. Anong meron sa salamin na 'yun at ganoon ang naging reaksyon niya.

"By any means, are you crystallophobic?" Loki questioned the girl again na sinagot naman nito ng pagtango. Ano 'yung sinabi niya? Crysta-what?

"Crystallophobia is the fear of glasses due to some traumatic reasons. Maybe it triggered a past memory of hers kaya sinapit niya ang ganitong sitwasyon." And the spotlight goes to Loki again.

Dumating na din 'yung first aid at ginamot 'yung babae which is Lisa Barnuevo. Bumalik na sa normal 'yung daloy ng ball. Lahat nagsasayawan at nagkakasiyahan na ulit except for the four of us—Loki, Jamie, Al and I.

Hindi na rin kami nakapagsayaw ni Luthor kasi kinailangan uli siya para mapanatili ang maayos na takbo ng event.

Nakapalibot kami sa iisang table. Walang nagsasalita ni isa though there was still this same scenario—Jamie clinging her arms into Loki's.

"Umm... Excuse me. Lahat po kayo members ng Q.E.D. Club hindi ba? Gusto ko lang sana humingi ng tulong." It was the girl before—Lisa.

"Yes. What mystery would you like to serve our plate? Make sure it's something that we could really feast on." Loki rudely welcomed our supposed client. May problema pa ba s'ya bukod sa nangyari kanina?

Instead of explaining her problem, she showed as six pictures of different objects. There's a cat, a book, a dictionary and others. Okay. So what do these signify?

"Since December 13, I've been receiving weird gifts. Isa na dun 'yung nabasag ko kanina. Kada natatanggap ko ito, nakakarinig ako lagi ng tunog na motor." She's on the verge of explaining when someone interrupted her.

"What are we gonna do with this? Ni wala ka namang specific na ipapagawa." Jamie entered the conversation.

"I want you to figure out who's sending me these gifts. I hope you could help me." Sabi nito at iniwan na uli kaming apat.

Tumingin ako kay Loki and it seems that he's under a deep thought. Maybe this case somehow satisfied his hunger for mystery.

"These are death threats." Loki suddenly spoke na kinabigla naman naming lahat. What is he saying?

"Pa'nong death threat Loki?" Tanong ni Al dito. He got all of us curious.

"First picture, it's a dead cat. Hindi man nasabi ni Leah ito kanina pero obviously it's dead. Notice the blood stains in the poor feline's fur." Pinakita niya 'yung unang litrato sa 'min. Oo nga. Hindi ko 'yun napansin kanina pero halata mo ngang patay ito.

"Next, the book Raven By Edgar Allan Poe. Raven symbolizes death. The third one, which is a photo album, contained a picture of three people—two guys on the sides and a girl on the middle. Have anyone heard of a belief about it?"

"The middle one dies." Sambit ni Al.

"Yeah. That's right. Look closely at the picture. Sinong nasa gitna?" We all grasped for air as soon as we saw it—it was Lisa!

"That's not all. Look at this tear page of a chinese dictionary. The first word to be seen is pinyin sî which means death. Owl's the same as the raven. It signifies death."

"Lastly, this picture of six birds. What do you think it is?"

"Is it some kind of a foreign bird? I honestly have no idea." Sagot ko dito.

"Nope. It's a crow—hooded crows to be precise. Also, seeing 6 crows at a time purely means death."

So all of those were death threats. Whoever was the man behind it surely is a genius in plotting these threats.

But something's bugging me about earlier.

"Pero anong ibig sabihin nung salamin na regalo sa kanya? I haven't heard any bad luck about it."

"The man behind this knows that his recipient's crystallophobic so he gave her this kind of gift. According to folklore, breaking a mirror is a surefire way to doom yourself to seven years of bad luck. The superstition seems to arise from the belief that mirrors don't just reflect your image; they hold bits of your soul. That's why breaking a mirror may somehow lead to death."

If the sender knows about her phobia, then he must be someone close to her. Not everyone knows the phobia of one another.

"But you know what are the significant clues for this case?" Pahabol na tanong ni Loki.

"The picture and the Christmas carol entitled '12 days of Christmas'. Just so you know, Moriarty's not involved here. He's a man of nursery rhymes and not Christmas carols."

The ball ended with a blast of mystery. Andito kaming apat sa apartment ulit habang nag-uusap usap tungkol sa mysterious Santa Claus na ito.

According to Loki, the mystery Santa followed the pattern of the song 12 Days of Christmas, but it was a sinister version of it. On the first day, dated December 13—where 12 days are left before Christmas—Lisa received one cat.

The next day, she received the book raven. In the Norse lore, God Odin was followed by two black ravens so we assumed that it emphasizes the number two. The third gift she had was a picture with three people in it.

The fourth which was a tear page of a chinese dictionary got us all confused on how it is connected to the number 4. So we surf the web and found out that the number 4 and the word death are homonyms considering the number to be a bad luck for the Chinese people.

The owl that hoots 5 times clearly means death so we asked Lisa about the stuffed toy that she received and she confirmed that it does hoot 5 times.

The next one's obvious 'cause there are 6 crows in it, just the same as the third gift she received. The glass that she received last night brings 7 years of bad luck when shattered.

These are just 7 items. So that means there's more to come.

"I already talked to Lina and she told me some interesting facts about the two guys that she is with on the picture." Kwento nito. Wala na din kasi sa 'min 'yung pictures. Binalik namin kay Lisa kasi baka may makaalam na iba then our plans will be foiled. Atsaka meron naman kaming Jamie for her impressive memory.

"What about it?"

"It was her bestfriend James Vicente and boyfriend Ivan Revilla. The boyfriend's hemophobic while the bestfriend's allergic to animals—it was proven by our client though. So who do you think did it?"

"They don't seem to qualify as suspects because of the gifts."

"Hindi tayo pwedeng magmadali. It can just be the mastermind's plan to confuse us of the real culprit. We just need to wait for the right time and I'll introduce you to him." Edi alam niya na pala kung sino? What do you expect of The Clark High's Sherlock?

"Another thing. Lisa and I talked about her personal life and it turned out that she caught her boyfriend cheating several times. On the other hand, her best friend kept on confessing his unrequited love for her." Said Loki, leaving as more curious than before.

We waited until Christmas because Loki said so. Instead of enjoying and feasting on different foods and specialties we're stuck with this mystery.

The past days, pinadalhan kami ni Lisa ng mga pictures ng mga natatanggap niyang regalo: A replica of the planet Saturn, An anime entitled One Piece, an old calendar, a mechanical Clock, and a bible.

All of those, as Loki said, still follows the pattern and are death threats as well. But the last gift was the main clue for this mystery.

Saturn: Based on numerology, it is connected with the number 8 and more likely signifies death also.

One Piece anime: The numbers of the main characters are nine. Nine is known for its meaning of suffering. The ninth member of the said anime was a skeleton and it was said to bring bad luck.

Old calendar: In Roman calendar, the tenth month is December and not October. So it means that the death will occur this December.

Mechanical Clock: Lisa said that the clock was broken and was stuck at the number eleven. According to Loki, this means that the sender was alarming the recipient that death is approaching her because 11 symbolizes urgency.

Lastly, the main piece of this mystery. The Bible: The twelfth apostle, Judas Iscariot, betrayed Jesus. So this gift basically means that the one close to her has actually betrayed her and was trying to kill her.

So basically, all of the gifts that Lisa received were purely death threats under the song 12 Days of Christmas. She surely is in trouble.

On this very day, we met up with Lisa, at sinabi sa kanya ang tungkol dito. Natakot siya bigla kasi 'di niya alam na nasa panganib pala ang buhay niya—pero hindi niya alam ang pagkatao ng suspek. All she knew is that those gfts were signs of a murderous event.

Nagsabi din si Loki sa 'min ng magiging plano to lure out this mystery Santa of hers. Although kilala niya na kung sino, he still needs to prove his claim.

The plan was for Lisa to meet up with the suspect. Si Al nasa may bandang counter in case na maglagay ng lason ang suspek sa mga inumin. Kaming tatlo naman nila Loki, nasa table na malapit kay Lisa so we can watch over her.

Habang hinihintay dumating ang mystery Santa niya na si James Vicente. Tinignan ko uli 'yung listahan nung mga regalong natanggap niya.

I don't know if this is another mere coincidence but it surely gave me the chills. The gifts initials formed the words Death Has Come.

Upon hearing the song '12 Days of Christmas' we learned that the one who gave gifts to the persona was her true love. Basically, our prime suspect is her boyfriend. But Loki had another one in mind and this was proven when Lisa told us some bits of herself. So which one of them showed her true love?

Maya-maya ay dumating na din ang hinihintay namin. Pumasok siya sa may glass door at nagpalinga-linga. Hinahanap niya siguro si Lisa. Nang makita niya ito ay napangiti ito bigla at nilapitan ito. They even shared hugs.

Umorder muna ng drinks 'yung lalaki at iniwan si Lisa doon. She still doesn't know that her very own best friend was the one plotting her death.

Si Al ang nasa may counter kaya nakikita niya ang galaw nung lalaki. He immediately signaled me to come—by tapping the counter's bell for three times—kaya bigla akong lumapit dun sa lalaki and shocked him with the stun pen.

Agad itong sinalo ni Al so we wouldn't look suspicious. Besides, there were lots of people here in the café. Nakita ko 'yung kape na ipapainom dapat ni James kay Lisa. There's a scent of bitter almond coming from it. He was gonna use cyanide to kill her, eh? Good thing Loki's plan was spot on.

"Good Job Lorelei. Come over here Lisa." Finally! He got it all correct.

"He was the one behind the gifts and your supposed death, too." Paliwanag ni Loki which caused Lisa to broke down into tears.

"I-I *hic* can't believe it." Sabay hagulgol nito.

"You told us that he was allergic to animals, didn't you? Pero nabanggit mo din na lagi kang may naririnig na motor kapag natatanggap 'tong regalo. The gifts that he sent were just delivered kaya there's no direct contact between him and the animals." Paliwanag ni Loki dito.

"Atsaka, as my memories recall, pare-pareho ang wrapper na ginamit sa pagbalot ng mga gifts kaya hindi imposible ang sinasabi ni Loki dear." Singit ni Jamie.

"Maybe, we'll know his motive as soon as he woke up." Sabi ni Loki kaya nagpaalam na din sa amin si Lisa who was still in tears.
