Chapter 5 - Lightning

"Where is she now?" A woman asked, to no one in particular. She stared up at the large computer screens in front of her. Most of them monitored the rest of the experiments at the lab but one in particular showcased a map of the United States, a blinking red light blipped on the screen.

"She's in New York now sir." A computer technician responded, the woman didn't know their names, nor did she care. Her heels clacked on the linoleum floor as she walked closer to the screen. She stopped in front of the screen, staring at the little red dot that had become her livelihood, she wasn't going to let her slip away.

"And the boy?" She asked.

The computer tech that had answered her before stood up from the chair he had been sitting in, controlling the screens on the wall, "Well, sir, we can't be sure. But we can only assume he's with her in New York."

The woman nodded, her tight bun glued to the top of her head. She pulled down her navy blue pantsuit jacket, straightening it out and sighed, "At least her tracker is still working. Connect to it and show her we're watching."

"Yes sir!" The computer tech saluted the woman and rushed out of the room, going to find the people that could actually do this part of the woman's task.

The woman turned back the computers lined up on tables in front of the screened wall, and zoomed in on the blinking red dot, "New York huh? That's a long way from home sweetie. Mommy's gonna bring you back."

Kelsey couldn't sleep, and it wasn't like she usually did anyways but she figured that the queen sized plush bed and comforters would help. She rolled on her back and sighed, staring at the white ceiling. She flashed back to HIDE, the white ceiling and walls closing in around her, the white coats surrounding her, suffocating her. Kelsey squeezed her eyes shut and blocked out the images from her head.

"It's ok Kels. You're safe now. The Avengers will protect you. You know this." She spoke aloud to herself, hoping that it would calm her down.

As soon as Kelsey had woken up from her trip from the desert she had unconsciously scanned the minds of everyone in the room. She hadn't meant to, but she had been a little disoriented. The first few voices had snuck into her head and then suddenly the entirety on New York was whispering in her ears. It drove her mad, hearing everyone and everything at once, but she had never experienced that many voices at once, hence her mild panic attack. Back at the lab, she hadn't been exposed to many people and it was easy to block them out most of the time, except when the white coats forced her to open her mind and strengthen her 'powers'. Kelsey shuddered.

But during her accidental loss of control she had heard the minds of Tony, Nat and the hundreds of other SHIELD agents, and knew they were the good guys. Sure, she had heard a few people who were weary of the cause, but Kelsey knew that they were consciously evil.

When Kelsey was ten, the white coats had begun training her how to block out the voices, the nicest thing they've done to her. After she had mastered it, she had made a mental promise to herself that if she had ever gotten out of that place, she would never read the minds of the people around her. That she would try to live a normal, powerless life. Only now did she realize how hard keeping that promise would be. Thousands of voices scratched at the back of her mind, threatening to break through the wall that Kelsey had built to block them out.

After a few minutes of staring at the ceiling, Kelsey realized that she wasn't going to go back to sleep, she stood up, the doctors had deemed her fit enough to be out of the wheelchair hours ago, and slipped on the black hoodie that Tony had given her, a red Ironman logo was printed on the front. She quietly padded to the door of her room and hesitantly placed her hand on the doorknob.

Come on Kelsey, you aren't locked up anymore, the door will open and no one is going to stop you. She took a deep breath and opened the door, still slightly surprised that it wasn't lacked. Kelsey almost laughed with the feeling of this slight freedom she now possessed.

Her bare feet smacked against the wood floors as she quietly walked down the hallway towards the elevator, careful not to disturb the others. At the end of the dark hallway Kelsey hit the up arrow on the elevator and then decided against it, walked over to the door marked stairs and began climbing up floor by floor.

She winced as the cool linoleum of the stairs touched her feet but soon her warmed up from the climb and reached the top floor of the building, five floors above where she had been sleeping. A single door greeted her at the top of the stairs, and she pushed it open. The smells of the fresh air hit her nose and she breathed deeply. Her eyes watering at the freshness of it. Growing up in a sealed facility didn't provide air as fresh as this. She stepped out further onto the roof, staring out at what lay below her. Millions of lights twinkled in the dark sky, pretending to be the stars the Kelsey had only heard about through the minds of the white coats. Light flashed through the dark sky, splitting it in half. Kelsey jumped, uncertain about what it was. Spending nineteen years locked away in a windowless facility would do that to you.

The white light flashed again, quietly slicing the sky with it's beautiful light. Kelsey broke her promise and reached out to the nearest awake mind,

Lightning and no storm, what the hell?

It was a man's head she had snuck into to figure out what the mysterious light in the sky was, and though Kelsey had broken her promise to herself within the first day and a half of her stay she found that she didn't regret it now that she had a name to call the beautiful light.

Kelsey watched as the white light appeared more and more frequently in the sky, until the sky was almost as bright as the city itself. Kelsey could sense the confusion in the whispers that tickled the back of her mind, but she shoved them away.

Suddenly the lightning stopped and in front of her a man appeared.

Kelsey stepped back closer to the door. The man was large, at least three time the size of Kelsey's small form. His blonde hair and long red cape blew from the wind. In his hand he held a huge metal hammer, he stared curiously at Kelsey, now that he had realized she was there.

"Who are you?" She asked, timidly, stepping back towards the door.

"I am Thor of Asgard. Who are you? And why are you here?" His voice was deep, but calming at the sametime, Kelsey detected a hint of an accent that none of the white coats had. She hadn't ever heard of a place called Asgard but the people there must speak differently than she learned how to.

"M-my name is Kelsey. Tony Stark brought me here." Kelsey spoke louder, more confident that the man wouldn't hurt her, from the lack of anger she sensed from him.

"Ugh. Go home. I thought he was done with that sort of business." Thor responded walking towards her.

Kelsey had no idea what kind of 'business' he was talking about, but it didn't sound very nice, "No, he uh, he brought me and my friend here for protection."

Thor stopped and looked at her, nodding, "Well, then you must be the reason Stark called me down here. Said it was urgent."

Kelsey shrugged, "Did you do that? The, uh, the lightning in the sky."

The large man, named Thor looked up and smiled, "I did, why? It didn't hurt anybody did it? That was not my intention."

Kelsey smiled, realizing that the man though he looked like a giant, was a gentle one, "No, but it was beautiful. I had never seen anything like it."

Thor looked pleased with himself, "Thank you, Kelsey of Stark's protection."

Suddenly something in her head began to stab, "Yeah uh, it was -" Kelsey struggled to stay focused on the conversation she was having, she definitely did not want to make a scene with the admittedly hot new stranger.

"Are you alright?" He asked in his deep voice.

Kelsey waved her hand, "Yeah- uh. I'm fine." The stabbing got worse and her vision began to blur. It wasn't the voices, it was something else. Kelsey remembered the bandages that had been wrapped around her brown hair and realized they weren't there anymore. The white coats. She watched Thor's blurry form walk towards her as she clutched her head and squeezed her eyes shut.

She felt Thor picked her up and begin rushing her down the stairs that had led her up to the roof as her began to feel unconsciousness take over.

She hadn't escaped from them after all.
