<8> Starlight

I came back from consciousness to the sound of speaking. I sensed three heat signatures in the same area as me, and I could tell that there was another thing there but I wasn't sure.
I slowly opened one eye to see three humans staring at me. I shot up but hit my head on something above me making me grunt in pain at the splitting pain going through my skull.

I looked around to see that I was in some sort of cave. The three humans were backed up holding each other with mixed fear and shock. I looked at them confused, why were they scared? Oh, right, I was currently glowing due to the massive amounts of power and heat I instinctually let loose, and it was starting to cause pain to the three humans.

I immediately calmed myself down and focused on the heat that my body gave off and stuffed it towards the center of my body. I heard a few sighs of relief as I turned around and lay down with my head on my paws, looking at the left wall closest to the cave entrance. I didn't mean to hurt them, I mean they probably were friends of the other dragon that helped me, and the emotions that were still going through me were still overwhelming.

There were so many emotions going through my head right now: jealousy, anger, hatred, loneliness, and sadness. I couldn't turn human still, and it hurt. It hurt worse than the processes of transformation and I didn't know why.

I felt the vibrations of something coming towards me from behind but I already knew what it was and it wasn't a threat, hopefully. One of the humans were coming towards my head and then I felt something brushing along my neck scales and the suddenness of it was shocking: it was both comfortably to be touched and uncomfortable at the same time. My gaze snapped back to look at the human touching me and it was one of the females. The other two were hanging back, one male and other female, both looking a bit anxious towards the other's actions.

I looked over the one that had come up to me but they either didn't notice or care as they stared at my molten-colored scales in awe. I didn't understand that either, I didn't want this, they wouldn't want this, in fact I don't think that anyone that had to go through that process would like it in the end. Supposed to lead the Earth into a new age of existence my tail.

I sensed something cold coming towards all of us, and when I looked over to the front of the cave the blue Dragon was standing in the entrance, watching. The cold that was around him wafting into the cave was rather comforting actually. He seemed to be studying my actions around these three humans and just as he was about to come up to me I stood and walked into a further corner of the cave.

Are you healed enough to leave yet? I looked at him in shock at the rude words and growled at him angrily before tackling him outside of the cave. It didn't matter whether I was slightly smaller than him or not because thanks to my hunting skills, and our earlier scuffle, I got him pinned on his back with his wings folded underneath him, his legs pushing against the full weight of my body, and his tail and mine intertwined. Keeping either from moving.

How dare you speak to me like that after what happened yesterday. I growled at him and he glared.

I'm not the one that threw a fit and lost consciousness now am I? He sneered and I snarled at him.

At least you can have human friends still, they can't so much as understand me, I growled back.

That doesn't matter, he said and I looked at him curiously, You can still have human friends. It's may be a lot harder for them to understand you, but you can find a way to make it work somehow. Also did you forget that you woke up in a cave with them trying to care for you and not in the cold forest, alone with no one around.

I was speechless about the truth to his words, but I was also still pissed at him for wanting me out so quickly when I still haven't recovered fully yet. I stepped off of him still glaring but said nothing about wanting me gone... yet. He shook himself off and looked at me. What was that? Guilt? Pity? I didn't want to see either of those directed towards me, and luckily for him the three humans came by yelling with alarm. They all got in front of the blue dragon and looked at me with spears in their hands. I looked at them, looked at the opposing dragon, and scoffed before walking away.

I am sorry for my outburst earlier, and I do wish to get to know you better. We may be the only ones of our kind after all. The other drake stepped around the three humans to follow me causing them to gape at him in shock and perhaps a little amazement? I couldn't tell.

My name is Jack, and these are my human friends, in fact we've all known each other since childhood really. I only just found them around a year ago so we're still figuring some things out when I can't physically speak to them.

The three looked at him obviously wondering what was going on and he looked back at them and smiled, teeth partially hidden, probably to tell them that it was okay now and there was little chance of something happening. The girl came up first, putting her spear on her back and then bowing.

"Hi my name is Leanna, these two are my brothers, Ethan and Bryan. This big guy here is Jack, as he's probably told you, but hopefully we can be friends." She seemed rather calm for someone who's been put in danger because two dragons were settling their differences.

See there's nothing the you need to worry about, now if you don't mind I'm going to change forms so that I can speak to them about what just happened. Jack's body then began to shrink and I recoiled as his form turned more human-like. It stopped just taller than the others with wings, horns, claws, and a tail.

His form then slimmed and reformed: Black hair with red highlights here and there on his head, and his tail curled around his left leg it's spike-lain tip almost touching the floor. Then a large grey cloak seemed to seep out of his skin. And pretty soon afterwards everything stopped and he looked at me from under that giant hood that hid his face and draconian features surprisingly well. I turned and looked at the humans to see them all watching. still fascinated by his transformation.

"Can you transform too?" She asked and I shook my head making her 'oh' and look at the ground solemnly. "I'm sorry."

I apologize as well, Jack could still speak the Draconian language in human form?! That was certainly a shock. I still find it hard to believe that you can't transform. He turned to the others and sighed before motioning to me with a surprisingly pale arm.

"I hope that you all will treat..." he looked back at me awkwarkly

Starlight, I growled slightly amused.

"...Starlight, the way that you have treated me, and no I do not mean using her as bait like you did me to get rid of the Western City's King."

The boys seemed to cringe at this, and Leanna appeared to be ashamed and slightly amused as well. I cocked my head to the side in confusion.

"Oh come on that was like a half year ago dude," Ethan said and Bryant huffed, but they both were staring at their feet in shame. "Let it go already."

Did they really betray you for something so foolish? I asked and Jack just shook his head growled softly.

We needed to get rid of that city's King and that seemed like the only way to do it without causing bigger problems. Since they're still l hunting me. It was either I let these two capture me—giving a story of finding me sleeping and then binding me up and throwing me on a trailer—or I go in there and freeze everything and everyone for an unknown amount of time and either shatter everything or try to kill only one very important person.

—Of course even their best chains weren't able to keep me bound, but it was only thanks to this that we got to better the lives of many people. They brought me up to the Western City, went before the King, and when we were there. I broke out of my bonds and froze the palace and shattered everything I could. Then I got us out and we've been running from hunters ever since. Actually this is the first place that we've actually been able to remotely settle down for a while and live normal-ish lives as traders and such.

"Jack what are you telling Starlight?" Leanna asked and Jack looked back at her and smiled.

"I was just telling her how we defeated the Western City's King." He said and the others just cringed, letting out sighs of exasperation.

So how long have all of you been on the run for? I hummed and Jack turned his attention back to me and sighed scratching the back of his head.

"How long have we been on the run guys?" Jack asked making them snap their attention back to him with shock. I guess that that's was also something that have become so normal for them that they'd forgotten about it.

"I don't know." Ethan said and they all looked in different directions in thought.

"I think it's been...five years now?" Bryant said and the others looked at him and seemed to think some more before realizing something.

"Ah, I remember." Leanna said "It's been Six years not five. It was the same year Jack came to us, remember."

Everyone seemed to realize what she said was true, as by the "ah's" and "oh yeahs" coming out. I was shocked, they've been on the run from hunters and cities for six years, maybe longer even. That was just unbelievable, especially with all of the the Mutated and Escaped going around.

How-how did all of you survive as humans for that long without a city. I asked not expecting it to be the same as my life.

Hunting on our own, fishing, fighting off the creatures, and people. They tried to do bad things before and I am not going to let that happen again. Jack said while growling in anger. His form flickering a little and his eyes flashing ocean Blue from underneath his hood. Once Leanna noticed that there was most flowing outwards from underneath his fur cloak, she stepped in and put a hand on his shoulder.

"It wasn't easy, but we managed. We all helped one another survive and keep each other safe. Even killing other people if left with no other choice." Leanna's voice got quieter and quieter near the end and she looked down in shame. I guessed that she either killed someone accidentally, or maybe even on purpose, but she still feels bad about it, even if they deserved it.

"Don't think about that Lena." Jack's voice cut off my thought process and I absentmindedly growled making them all look at me with confusion.

Sorry. I said sheepishly, and Jack just rolled his eyes and walked over to the back of the cave and dumped some sticks on a ditch in the ground with what looked like ashes already in it.

Are you sure that starting a fire tonight is a good idea I asked looking at the moonless sky.

Yeah, from what we've encountered only a few Mutated come by from time to time, but none have actually come in while I've been in with my siblings. Even in this form they know that I'm stronger than them. The others seemed to be watching our conversation with great interest.

Well if making a fire is out of the option how do you expect us all to stay warm for tonight? He growled and I let my scales heat up a little bit more than normal. Just enough to where I thought would be able to heat up the entire cave and when Leanna, Ethan, and Bryant sighed in satisfaction and took off their cloaks. I stopped letting my scales heat up and gave Jack a pointed look.

See some of us don't need to make a fire, I'm literally made of it. I grinned at him and he growled at me but didn't protest as I lay down against the wall and watched as Jack moved farther away from the heat. Seemingly letting go of the cold that he had been keeping at bay as just slight drifts of mist from the bottom and cracks of his robe. It turned into a full on mini storm around him and he sat down against the side of the cave and went still. The ice around him spreading to the walls and floor. Stopping a good three feet from his body in a circle around him.

——————————-

I woke up to the sound of snarling just outside of the cave entrance. I opened my eyes and looked around. Jack and the others were still asleep. Snuggled up in their sleeping bags contently. I got up as yawned as quietly as possible when your a dragon.

I guess that being woken up early in a testing facility still gets on my nerves. I looked around and saw that my breakfast was stalking me. I dove at then entrance of the cave and snapped down on the first Mutated, a Ripper, with my maw. The feeling of it's bones crunching and his flesh separating around my teeth was delightful.

It's scream wasn't that loud thankfully due to it being already in my maw before it got the chance to expel air. I swallowed the top and ate the bottom too before moving on after the others that were currently running for their lives. Let's see, another Ripper, three Shooters, a Long Tongue, and a Jumper.

I decided to go after the Jumper first as it was straight ahead and in the trees, something I was an expert at moving around in quickly. I jumped into the nearest tree and snaked my way over to it. When I caught up to it it was mid-jump and defenseless. I snapped it up and moved on to the Shooters next. The three were traveling together for some reason and I noticed that if I went after them the other Ripper and Long Tongue would be able to get away.

Well it was three or two, and I didn't feel like going after the tougher meatier ones this time. I dropped from the tree and shot after the Shooters with lightning speed. My tail lashes the sides of the trees as I ran past them, after the Shooters. I reached them just as they jumped over a short canyon. Around twenty feet across, and they had enough speed and strength to jump the full distance, but sadly I was faster.

I jumped the edge and opened my wings to help me glide, while simultaneously grabbing one of them from the air and biting it in half. The legs, now separated from the top, fell faster than I could grab and hit the side of the canyon before dropping to the depths below. I watched as the other two landed, one in a tree, the other stumbled on the ground upon landing but both shot off again.

I jumped into the trees and stalked them from above. Eventually getting in front of the one in the trees and ripping it apart from left shoulder to right hip as I sped past. I would come back for the remains later, I mean they tasted better when still alive, but hopefully it would be trying to crawl away when I reached it again and would thus be still slightly alive.

I didn't wait it's body to hit the ground and I shot after the last one and decided to play a little. I ran level with it, eye to eye to see if it feared me or not but I couldn't tell what it felt. I flipped around cutting its legs off at the joint, causing the bottom part of his legs to fall down immediately and the top part kept on moving, flipping backwards and then slamming into a tree, of which I then cut through at the Shooters waist.

Then I ate the top part and rushed back to find the top half of the other one surprisingly it was trying to crawl back towards the canyon. I snapped that one up too and then looked around at the forest surrounding me. Then Jack stepped out of the other side of the forest looking at me with a horrified and slightly awed expression, and my heart sunk at the sight of him.

I didn't want him to see that just yet.

Thanks for reading and I am sorry to all of those that have read and enjoyed this story, and also any grammar errors. I am writing this on my phone late at night and am currently distracted a bit. I especially apologize to posiden9999 since they helped me with the introduction of a character (Jack)...

That I have neglected to include as a main character hopefully in the future I can open up on everyone characters and personalities but right now I am not able to get to this story very often.

I may ask if anyone else wants to have a character introduced later on but for now thanks for reading and I'll see you all later.
