29- Regret
The next few days where filled with regret. I can't count how many times I wished we had left Caius tied up. He never stopped talking. Peter and I would block him out by dodging in and out of trees, trying to cut him off. We figuresd seeing as we where giving up some of our supplies, and being verbally tortured twenty four seven, he could carry a little more then us.
Well... Okay a bit more then a little. Alright, fine, we'd loaded most of our things onto him, and where pretty much using him as a pack mule. He didn't seem to mind that much though. Just the occasional shriek when his hover boots gave out.
But we where making great time. If we didn't have any issues, we estimated that we'd be back sometime tonight. Having proper food helped us go fatser, and kept our spirits up. I couldn't imagine what it was like for those back at camp.
"Hey, Cora, can we have lunch?" Caius pestered again. "My feet are aching. We should take a break at least." He promped.
I sighed. If we where still going in the right direction, there should be a pond soon. A few minutes later, we managed to locate it, a little off track of the way we where headed. As soon as we stopped, Caius dropped all of his bags and tore off his boots, plunging his feet into the water, a little more dramatically then I would have.
"Ten minutes, that's it. I want to get back to camp today." I said. I wasn't going to budge on this. I had no clue what the others where doing for food. They would have run out after a few days. Where they hunting? I pictured my mother with a bow and it almost made me laugh.
I dug out our water bottles and filled them up before taking out some food. We ate our cold fried rice in silence. The first silence since we had woken up. Caius was too hungry to talk. I'll give it to him, he did work hard. We hadn't stopped since nine this morning.
I finished off my meal as quick as I could, and started to pack up right away. Peter helped me as well, as Caius played around in the water. I rolled my eyes at him as we stuffed out bags full once more.
"All right, boots on." I said a few minutes later. Caius groaned and started to put them on, much slower then necissary. I hadn't taken mine off, so I simply swiped my finger and waited for the beeping sound.
"Why do your boots always do that? Are they broken?" Caius asked.
"No, they're fine. It's just a mis-ap with the wiring." I said, annoyed.
"But isn't that, like dangerous? They could stop working. or something, or start pushing you the wrong way, or-"
"Nope. They're perfectly fine. Better then fine infact." I clipped on my backpack as I talked.
"But-" Caius tried to continue.
I grinded my teeth and started to stride. I sped up and left Caius in my trail. Peter caught up to me a few minutes later, and we kept up our speed for a good while, Caius struggling to keep us in view.
A few hours into our ride, as Caius was once again talking my ear off, he was interupted by a pulsing beep, and a vibration comming from his bag. We slid to a stop and Caius opened up his bag.
"It's just my pager. I usually call my parents ever couple days, so they're probably wondering why they haven't heard from me." Caius explained, completely oblivious to the threat he was possing. He was about to open the pager and answer the call when I snatched it from him.
"Are you crazy? These have GPSs in them. You'll give us away the second you respond. What where you thinking bringing this?" I demanded.
"Hey! You think I'm that stupid? I wasn't going to respond. I was trying to hang up. I'm not an idiot you know." He said. "They're handy to have around. If there's an emergency or something. I thought it would be useful to have a backup plan, unlike some people here." He said, reaching for the device.
"Some people here like to be safe." I started. He had a point though. If one of us got really hurt, it could be helpful to be able to call for help. I guess it wouldn't hurt to have it around, just so long as no-one used it. "You so much as touch a button, and it's gone, you hear me?" I asked.
Caius nodded, staring at the ground with frustration. I handed it back to him and he stuffed it into his bag again.
"Alright. Lets keep going." I said, starting to run.
