13- The Ocean
Finally, after a long week of stuffing my brain with societal fluff, it was Saturday. I stared at the ceiling with a smile. I turned my head to look at my clock. I had slept in longer then I thought I would. It was just about 9:30AM. I was an early riser, usually getting up at about 8:00 on the weekends.
Peter and Skyler where coming over in about an hour. We'd made plans to go to the ocean today. I was in charge of bringing food. I got up and changed into a pair of jeans and a tank top, leaving my hair down. It was so nice to let it hang loosely for once.
I walked to the kitchen, deciding to have an egg for breakfast. I grabbed an egg and some cheese from the riddle and started preparing it. About ten minutes later, I was sitting down with the my scrambled egg and toast, looking out at the ocean. It was really nice to be able to see it each and every morning. I ate quickly before cleaning up and heading downstairs to the cafeteria with a tote bag.
I tried the door, but it was locked. It wasn't supposed to open until lunch time. I looked down at my left hand, seeing the small silver ring. I took it off and started to look more closely at it. How was it supposed to work? I asked myself. There was a small blinking blue light underneath handle, and a small blue piece of metal on the outside of the ring. I slipped it back on and pointed it at the light.
The door made a beeping noise, and a click. I tried the handle, and the door popped open. I smiled and slipped inside. I grabbed a bunch of snacks, like apples and granola bars, a few drinks and some sandwiches. Then I returned to my room and packed some of my things in the bag.
By the time I was done, I heard a knock at the door, and then it opened up. Peter and Skyler where beaming happily at me, each carrying bags of their own.
"Ready?" Asked Skyler.
I nodded and we headed out. We exited the building and went to the parking lot. There where a few taxi's in the parking lot, so I waved one down and we climbed in. As I was a society member, they had to take us wherever we wanted, and they couldn't ask for payment. I felt a little badly, but they would earn money in the rest of the day.
The ride was about 10 minutes before we climbed out and thanked the driver. I took a deep breath, tasting the salty air. My sister had always loved that smell. Peter ran out onto the sand and set out our blanket. I put my bag down on it and walked out to the water's edge. The waves lapped at my toes and made me giggle. Little crabs tried to seek cover under rocks, and tiny fish darted around under the waves.
I reached down and pulled of my shirt (don't worry, I was wearing a bathing suit underneath) and my pant, tossing them further onto the shore, safe from waves. Then I started to walk into the freezing water.
It was the kind of water that hurt for a few seconds, but then felt really soothing. I had a fairly high tolerance to cold water, but even so, the icy stuff made my hairs stand up.
Soon I was able to dunk my head and and paddle out further. Peter and Skyler where sitting on the beach, shaking their heads at me like I was crazy. I smiled back and went underwater. I loves padeling hard underwater. Then every once in a while you could stop moving and just sail underwater, carried by your momentum. It was the most relaxing thing I knew how to do, and second most fun. Of course the 1st place prize for that race went to hover booting.
I swam for about 20 minutes before the cold managed to get to me. I made my way back to shore and curled up in a towel, shivering and chattering my teeth. Peter and Skyler just laughed at me. It made me smile, how little pity they had for me. We ate our lunch and played a few games with an inflatable ball that Peter brought. The time flew fast, and before we knew it, it the sun was starting to set.
I checked my watch, which indicated that it was just past eight. We'd asked the driver of the taxi to come back right about now. We looked down the road, and surely, there he was. We climbed back in and made our way back to school.
When we got back we said goodbye and headed to our rooms. I was pooped out, but in a good way. I felt free again.
Dinner was brought to my room again and I ate quickly, falling asleep early.
