12- Jess

I sat with Peter and Skyler at lunch. I had a turkey sandwich and a little raspberry yogurt cup. It seemed the food quality had sufficiently gone down after the first day. It was still much better then I got at home though.

"We didn't see you after class last night." Said Skyler as we ate.

"Sorry, I was really tired out. I just wanted to go to bed early." I explained.

"In my first class, they taught us how to start people's hearts again using these paddles, you know, like they have in movies? It was pretty cool, and they had this one that they let us use on dummies. It was pretty cool." Said Peter excitedly.

"They got us to make models and design the best way to irrigate crops and stuff like that. They showed us the kinds of tools they used to make it easier on the farmers and stuff like that." Said Skyler.

I smiled at them as they talked. They where having a really great time with their classes.

"What about you, Cora? Wha'd they teach you in 'society 101'?" Joked Peter.

I shrugged my shoulders.

"They made me do some tests and I got this tour from last years member, Jessica." I said. I wasn't nearly as exited as they where.

"Was she the one who told you to dress like that?" Teased Peter, gesturing to my suit and hair with a smile.

"Yeah, that'd be her." I said with a small giggle.

We only spent a moment talking about the society class before Peter and Skyler jumped right back into their own conversation. I finished off my sandwich quickly and excused myself.

In my afternoon class, Jessica started teaching me what the expectations of me where going to be like. I knew that I wouldn't have much power for quite a few years. She said that they liked to get the young faces to represent things. I'd be sort of taking credit for the decisions that the rest of the society made. I'd have to go to all the meetings and such so that I understood what I was doing, and then show it to the rest of Cordova in my own words.

The idea made me feel a little sick.

She told me my first meeting would be next Monday. It was supposed to be about the hover pass. And so, on that note, she began to reach me all about the hover pass.

There was allot I didn't know. Like why it was really created. She told me that there had been a problem with citizens going into the woods before the hover pass was made. There was a spot where they all liked to go, and so they created it to sort of block off the passage.

In honesty, the story didn't seem very likely. It wasn't very well built up. People went into the forest all the time on the other side of the hover pass. Why did they cafe so much about that side?

I didn't want her to think I was questioning her though, so I just took down notes and smiled at her.

It took me a while before I noticed she was smiling back at me. It made me feel a small warmth inside. I tried to cover it up. When ever I saw her smile I'd look back down at my paper and keep writing.

By the end of class I was thoroughly confused by everything she had taught me. I thanked her once more and left.

Once I was back in my room and lay back on my bed. I tried to figure out what was going on between us. I didn't really know her at all. She acted like any other society member, not giving away what she was really like inside.

Still, I had this feeling that she would be incredible she'd let herself.

Peter and Skyler came over that night and we watched some old action movie about a guy named James Bond. It was REALLY old. Like, WAY before Cordova. I didn't pay much attention to it though.

I was thinking about Jessica.

Jess, I thought in my mind.
