The un-un-dead
I was violently pulled away from my slumber by Eva shaking my shoulders like a mad man. I tossed and turned trying to swat her away with my hands but the shaking still continued.
"Scarlet you need to get up now!" Eva's voice held a sense of panic, which made me bolt up in urge of panic.
I stared at her, awaiting an explanation. When I didn't get one I opened my mouth at an attempt to get my questions answered.
Her eyes widened as she immediately put one finger to her lips, indicating for me to be quite. This action made me stop myself before I spoke, leaving my mouth open like a fish.
I knew that look that was on Eva's face, it was the look I dreaded to see, It was the look meaning danger.
I became more alert as I frantically scanned the area for any threats. All I could see was forests upon forests of bright green oak trees.
No threats.
I let out a breath of relief, but relief was a luxury that I wasn't allowed to keep. Eva drew a circle around her heart, put three fingers up and pointed at the edge of the forest.
Realization dawns on me as dread filled me once again. When we were kids, to get rid of our boredom we would go down to the rocky caves at the beach and hunt monsters. Of course there weren't any real monsters, it was all in our imagination. However we knew they were real, somewhere in the world.
We spent countless of hours coming up with our own language to symbolize each monster. A finger pointing to the nose for a werewolf as they're commonly known for their amazing sense of smell. A finger to the ear for pixies, their pointy ears are what makes them different from humans.
A trace of a circle around the heart meaning...vampire
I squinted my eyes trying to spot the three vampires that disturbed my sleep. Normally I had good eye sight, however sleep riddled eyes didn't help my case.
I finally managed to faintly spot three shadows on the edge of the forest. Panicking I turned to the driver, ready to scream at him to get our ass's out of here, but the drivers seat was empty.
I whirl around to Eva repeatedly pointing to the drivers empty seat like I'd lost my marbles. She sighs pointing back outside, I freeze at this action.
If those vampires aren't friendly's, which I assume they aren't by the way Eva's sharpening her weapons, then we'd just lost out only hope of getting out of her alive.
We would be dead on foot, but neither of us knew how to operate a car so we're dead either way. I felt the coldness of a pointy silver stake being shoved in my unwanted hands.
My mother used to insist we went to our local combat trainer every Saturday for precautions. But being brought up on a small Island limited us to what we could learn as there was only one instructor.
I watched Eva load several dull pistols with little, sharp, wooden bullets. She then took two stakes out of her bra and straps them to her outside thighs for easy reach.
How she managed to keep them comfortably in her bra, I didn't know. With a grunt she shoves open the car door, cocking her gun ready in full hunter mode.
I bolt out the car after her, grabbing her arm trying to pull her back. I'm not letting her go on a suicide mission it would be three against one. She was always the strong headed one whilst I was the sensible one.
"Scarlet, we cant just sit and wait to become dinner" she hastily whispered, nodding her head in the direction of the unknown vampires.
Only they weren't there.
My eyes bulged in horror, there's no way they would just go and leave us so where are they? A crash on the top of the car behind us answered my question.
I froze not wanting to turn around and confirm my suspicion but the sound of Eva's pistol was all the confirmation I needed.
My heart was pounding so fast, I wouldn't be surprised if I had a heart attack, I could feel the blood rushing to my head. Come on Scarlet your meant to be a vampire, stop being so weak!
Spinning around I'm greeted with the sight of Eva hanging over the now dead vampire on the roof. I gotta give that girl more credit.
In a whirl of wind the other two vampires appeared. They looked different from normal vampires, their eyes were blood red, sharp deadly nails prodded from their fingertips and their skin was a sickly white.
Spotting their dead team mate, one pounced on Eva, while the other turned its attention to me. cheese balls.
It strides up to me, I tried to make the first blow, swiping the stake near its heart, but it blocked my assault and I was rewarded with a backhand across the face.
That thing hit me so hard that I went flying to the ground, whatever it was it wasn't any ordinary vampire. Vampires aren't meant to have that much of power.
A newly stinging sensation burned my face, tears pricked at my eyes, but I couldn't give up. Not if we had any hope of surviving.
I slowly wobble to my feet, aiming my stake at its heart, ready for its attack. Before I had a chance to defend myself against it, the unthinkable happened.
The dead vampire on the roof of the car shot back up.
What the hell...
Every nerve cell in my body was on edge, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up as a silent warning as my eyes bulged at the sight before me. Something was very wrong.
I stare at Eva, pure horror on my face. We both knew we couldn't win this fight, it was written across her face and probably mine too.
She sprinted over to me, grabbing my arm and pulled me as best she could into the forest.
"RUN SCARLET, RUN"
It doesn't take me long to abide her command, my feet start moving on their own accord towards the forest.
It felt like the wind was against us, every turn we would take it was there slicing at the rawness of my new wound on my cheek.
The sound of the wind whistling from tree to tree and our feet crunching leaf after leaf wasn't the only sound I could hear.
Not far behind us I could hear heavy footsteps pounding on the forest floor, giddy at the chase. we picked up the pace eager to get out of this never ending forest and soon we were greeted with the sweet sight of an opening.
I felt Eva push herself faster, eager to get to the opening, onto the open dirt path where someone should hopefully drive by.
Picking up the pace to match hers, we came out of the opening like a hot mess. Sweat trickled down out foreheads and I gingerly wiped it off, pulling a face at the feeling of wetness on my hand.
Looking around our joy was soon squashed as the dirt road was just, well a dirt road, no cars, no sign of humanity, no nothing. "shit" Eva whispered as she aggressively kicked the nearby rock.
I try to make my way over to her but my path is cut off by one of those things. Before I could respond it had me on the floor. I wrestled with it, trying to get it off me, but all it got me was a long slash on my left arm by its long talons.
It raises its talon again to swipe at my face, I start to panic, not knowing what to do so I lift my arm over my face protectively, hissing in pain while doing so as I use my left arm.
I await the blow, but it never came, I felt its bony hand scrap against my wound and that was it. I watched as the thing screeched in agonizing pain, I was trying to figure out what had caused it so much harm when I saw the tiniest drop of my blood on its hands.
its whole hand was steaming like it had just been dumped in a steaming pot, the blood boiled and evaporated into its skin and suddenly with a burst of grey dust, the vampire was no more.
I stared at the now empty space where the vampire had been, amazed, had I done that?
My eyes where glued to the spot, I felt like I was frozen, unable to move. A blare of an unknown horn snapped me out of my trance.
A black van had pulled up and in it was a very calm looking young boy. He seemed familiar, I narrowed my eyes at him. It soon dawns on me that it was the same guy at the airport.
My stomach did a somersault, whether it was because our escape was looking more to the bright side or because he was the one to save us, I don't know, probably the latter, probably.
I try to get up but gravity pulled me back down as a dull aching feeling invaded my brain making black spots appear in my line of vision.
The next thing,I know, Eva was at my side pulling me up into the safety of the van. Knowing I was safe, I felt the adrenaline rush out my body and it was then that I thought passing out seemed like a good idea.
