Chapter one: Running? Not my strong suit!

Sitting on the unoccupied beach, I watched as the sun hit my long brown hair, turning it into golden colour. Relaxing into the sun, I close my eyes and relish in the comfort it gave me, I was going to miss this.

Two weeks ago my household received an invite for me to attend this new academy. It said its solemn purpose was to integrate vampires and hunters into society together. Whether I believe this or not, it didn't matter because my mother, as gullible as she is bought the story.

It just seemed too good to be true for the leaders of both races to agree on this, after thousands of years of being mortal enemies, what had changed? Our feud was ancient and for it to stop just like that was, well, impossible. I was defiantly missing the bigger picture.

I sigh, deciding to open my eyes and watch as the crystal blue waves softly overlap each other. I tryed to take in as much as the view as possible, as I would soon be ripped away from this beautiful scene.

At least I wouldn't be alone at the academy, my best friend Eva was going as well. She was originally born In England so you could imagine the joy she felt when she learnt she would be going back there, me however, not so much.

Eva was a vampire hunter, however before her parents could brainwash her with their knowledge on vampires being the ultimate danger to mankind, she met me.

It was then, at the age of four, we connected. When we reached puberty we both changed, her into a hunter and me into a vampire, but that did not break our friendship.

She knew me, she knew I was not like the others. You see I am only part vampire, where full blooded vampires can walk in the sun, it irritates their skin. For me, its the total opposite, it fills me up with warmth that makes me feel like I'm home.

Of course I still need blood but I don't drink human blood, I can get the nutrients I need by drinking animal blood in a plastic cup, once a day, although it is kind of gross. However I can still eat normal food, it just gives me all the nutrients I need in order to survive.

Eva was there for me during the whole transition and I was there for her when her parents died at the age of fourteen. My mother, heart broken for the child welcomed Eva into our family and for five years now she has been living with us, under the care of my mother.

Tomorrow Eva wont be living with us, neither will I, as tomorrow is the day we get shipped away to a country infested with people speaking in weird accents, cheesy traditions and bad weather.

A part of me does wonder what it would be like to try one of their traditional meals, fish and chips and English tea but I would much prefer my own comfort food.

Snapping out of my thought before I got lost in my head, I checked my watch,  gasping as I realized it was way past my curfew.

"Crap" I mutter to nobody in particular as I jumped up and race across the sand. Being a vampire means having enhanced speed but because I'm not full blooded I only have half the speed than an average vampire would.

It's times like this when I wished I was a full blooded vampire, so I could speed home in time before my mother noticed I was out past curfew.

Pushing my body over the limit, I sprint past the market stalls that were set up in the middle of town. Most of the shop lights were now turned off but fairy lights were lit up all around town, they gave of a dull light as they were mainly there for decoration, so I had to rely on the moon for light.

Once I passed the stalls I raced up the rocky terrain of Gibraltar rock, specifically known for its monkeys. Me and animals however did not get along, I don't know why, must be my scent or something.

Living on a small Island has its advantages though, like not having far to travel to my house. However it has its disadvantages, one I face everyday after leaving the house which was getting back up the rock to get home.

My home is built into the rock of Gibraltar so you can imagine the effort it takes me to get home everyday.

When I reached my home, I bent over with my hand on my knees, gasping for air as I greedily sucked in as much oxygen as I could. Droplets of Sweat dripped from my forehead and I cringed at the feeling of it sliding down my face.

When I felt like I had enough oxygen to sustain me, I straighten myself up, using my shirt to wipe the sweat off my face.

Feeling my heart rate go back to normal, I reached for the door handle, that was no longer there as in that moment the door flew open.

There stood in the doorway was a very pissed of looking mother, my mother in fact, shit.

Her short brown hair was a mess, her tanned skin looked paler and sleep driven eyes stared at me, I could tell she stayed up to wait for me.

"Scarlet" she boomed "you know your curfew was an hour ago" her eyes scan me, giving me the once over then continued " I can't believe you'd be rebellious on your last day here."

I rolled my eyes at her over drastic words, before explaining " mother, I wasn't acting out, I just lost track of time, I guess I just wanted to remember this place as much as I could."

My mother, who's hand was gripping the door handle, threw her arms up in the air, like a gesture of a crazy woman exclaiming "I was worried sick Scarlet! I thought you had ran away or worse" tears pricked at the corners of her sleepless eyes.

I bowed my head to the floor, ashamed of myself that I had caused her worry and mumbled an apology.

My mothers eyes softened, her warm arms embrace me tightly, squishing my nose into her shoulder. I could smell the lavender from her perfume on her skin.

Once she lets me go she heads inside, into the warmth. I followed her into the house and took a seat on the couch.

My house wasn't huge but it wasn't small either. It consisted of a modern kitchen with white marble tabletops, a spacey living room with old fashioned dark crimson couches, two petite bathrooms and three bedrooms all equally big as each other.

I propped my feet on the stool and closed my eyes, relaxing into the couch. I was brutally disturbed when someone sneaked up behind me and grabbed my arms from behind.

"RAH" Eva screamed, I squealed, flinging my arms around like a headless turkey. I turned to see Eva grinning at me, her long dyed red hair was thrown up into a messy bun and her petite figure wore only a vest top and knickers.

Do not be fooled by her looks, she may look like she wouldn't be able to harm a fly but I've seen her in action and damn is she good.

I turned my body to face her, crossing my arms, I glared at her.

Her grin turns into a smile, " aww I'm sorry scarlet, didn't realize you were so jumpy" she giggled.

Scowling at her I protested in which she responded by dragging me up the spiral stair case and into her room.

Her room was cluttered with make up sets, magazines and clothes all thrown across the floor, there wasn't a single item that wasn't on the floor. she sits me down on a pile of her dirty clothes and clasps her hands together with excitement.

"I can't wait for tomorrow! help me pack pleeeeaaaase Scarlet you know the only thing I can pack is my makeup" she wines at me.

I laugh at her, she scares me, drags me up to her pit and begs me to pack her bag, what did I do to deserve such a psycho friend?

Not taking no for an answer Eva pounces on me, pinning my arms behind my back with one hand while using her other to mercifully torture me by tickling my most vulnerable spot, my toes.

I squirm under her touch as I try biting my lip to suppress my squeals, finally it became too much and I now needed the toilet. Scared of staining Eva's floor, I gave in to her torturous ways.

"Okay Eva, you win, I will pack your shit up into one bag" Eva looks at me like I was mad, "One bag! honey I'm gonna need at least five!" I flop onto my back groaning.

This was going to be a long night.
