Chapter 6

Not knowing what else to do she ran off to the bathroom sure that her friends won't even notice she was missing. They were so consumed by their own lives that they didn't even register her leaving. What she knew all too well was that the teachers, who usually didn't notice her, would notice her absence that day. The reason for that was the fact that they were supposed to have a big test and presence was obligatory. Rina knew the test was very important but there wasn't anything she could do, she was becoming invisible and doing that in front of everyone was far worse than missing the test. People already disliked her, but she knew that if they saw her disappear they would think she was also a freak. That is why she decided to hide in the bathroom. Since the classes were about to begin there was less chance of anyone going there. Nevertheless, she hid inside one of the stalls just seconds before she turned completely invisible. Luckily for her, it was one of the stalls with a working lock, so she locked herself in and decided to wait until she was visible again before she left since she didn't want it to happen somewhere in the middle of the school.

Unfortunately for her, she stayed invisible for her first lesson, the second lesson and during the break, she was still invisible. Girls started flooding into the bathroom chatting excitedly. They would try to open Rina's stall thinking it was empty but fortunately the lock held. After initial surprise that an empty stall was locked, they moved on thinking it was probably broken or something similar. After a while, Rina started hearing some familiar voices, but she wasn't one hundred percent sure she was right. At least she tried to convince herself she might have been wrong but deep down she knew there was no denying it. Those were her 'friends' talking, and they were talking about her. What she heard hurt her so much that she didn't know what to think or do. "She is such a nerd! I mean I knew Rina was a nerd even before I met her, but she is so stupid as well. I mean she thinks that we are actually friends!" Angela starts laughing her heart out and Mel joins in. "You are right she is so naive! She thinks that we are friends! How hard it is to realize that we are using her to pass our tests. I mean it's quite obvious that everyone does that. But maybe you are wrong about the nerd part. She missed that test! What a weirdo!" Mel finished laughing hysterically. After that, they changed the subject to the topics that were far more interesting to them. Still, it was enough for Rina to realize that not only did her friends think her invisible, but they were also not her friends at all. It hurt but if she was being honest with herself she already had a feeling that people were taking advantage of her. Nevertheless, she thought at least some of them were her friends, even just a little.

Depressed as she was she tried to ignore the surrounding conversations. There were a few girls gossiping and at one point they started gossiping about her and how they couldn't stand her but had to because of the upcoming tests. "How dare she miss today's test! I was counting on cheating off her exam! That selfish brat! Now I will get an F for sure!" one girl said. A slightly familiar voice started speaking and it took Rina by surprise. "How about you two stop gossiping and start studying! I don't understand Rina, and she is a bit unusual but don't you think it is terrible to say bad things about someone who has saved you from the bad grades so many times before? She doesn't have to do that, you know. Is that how you treat someone who tries to help you? You should be ashamed of yourselves." the voice said. That is when I recognized the voice, it was Dina, a quiet girl who had a few classes with me. I was surprised she in a way defended me since we didn't actually know each other well.

Dina was one of the rare people who never asked me for help. Probably because she studied for herself and didn't try to cheat her way into good schools. She was always quiet, and she never interfered in any class fights or gossips so it was a bit strange that she decided to defend Rina. Mostly because usually, it seemed to Rina that for her everyone was invisible except for her best friend with whom she spent most of her time. Dina was determined to focus on studying and not get caught up in the teenage drama. At that moment it became clear that Dina was also a just person who couldn't stay quiet when faced with such a huge injustice. As much as Rina was shocked, the girls Dina addressed seemed to be even more shocked. For a few seconds, they didn't seem to know how to answer until finally, they both said: "Whatever!" and left the bathroom. Soon enough everyone left and Rina was once again alone and missing another lesson.

Before that moment she had never missed a lesson and there she was missing a few lessons on the same day. So she tried to focus even harder on becoming visible. She tried to think about the fact that at least Dina didn't think badly about her. Of course, that wasn't enough, so she tried to think about some happy memories when she felt visible,  joyful. Then she was suddenly overwhelmed by the memory she thought was lost forever, the memory of her dad. They were at the beach, and he was trying to teach her how to swim. It wasn't going so well because she kept panicking and splashing around like crazy. Nevertheless, they were laughing and having fun, jumping around the water and trying to swim. Her mother and brothers were at the beach sunbathing so it was just her and her dad splashing around in the water. She felt so happy that it made her smile from ear to ear, she never stopped smiling. After they came out of the water they made some crazy looking sand castles and talked about everything and anything. She could always talk to her dad, unlike her mother and brothers. As the memory made her smile and remember the feeling of being noticed, being loved she started turning visible again. Soon enough she was back to normal. The only thing she had to do was find a way to justify her absence, so she decided to try to explain to the teachers that she wasn't feeling well and see what happens because it was actually the truth.
