Chapter 49
While Serena and Nat were taking a walk contemplating life, Caroline finally got some alone time with her husband after Rina left the room with a smile on her face. It warmed Caroline's heart to see that Jack managed to reconnect with Rina since they all truly needed to become closer as a family.
Caroline felt like she had managed to reconnect with their daughters more easily, so it was good to see that Jack was on his way to do the same. Still, it felt like the two of them also needed time to get to know each other again since being invisible did leave its toll on their relationship, much greater one than they both assumed.
Human beings relayed on sight more than they realized and being able to finally see the man she loved after such a long time made her ecstatic. Still, she couldn't help but noticed the differences from the last time she saw him. The years that had gone by had imprinted some new mannerisms and expressions on Jack. Still, Caroline was looking forward to learning each one of them.
"Hi," Caroline said.
Suddenly she was feeling shy around her husband. His visible self was so new to her that now that she was not worried about him dying she was unable to act normally. She couldn't be as relaxed around him as she always was.
"Hello, my darling. Come closer. What are you doing way over there?" He said.
She approached him slowly, trying to seem more relaxed than she felt. To her, it was like their first date, like they were two people truly meeting for the first time.
The moment she came close enough to Jack, he gently took her hand in his and gently kissed her soft skin. It was a gesture of love and tenderness that was so typical of Jack.
The rest of the world usually saw Jack (when he was still visible) as an emotionally distant guy since he didn't show his emotions in front of others so often. However, Caroline was the one who had the privilege to witness his gentler, even romantic side.
In that one gesture, she was finally able to accept that it was truly her husband. He was back. All the barriers that she had put around her heart so as not to get hurt in case he died, crashed down and she started sobbing.
Jack hugged her immediately and started stroking her hair in a familiar gesture that meant the world to Caroline. Visible or not, Jack was always there for her. He helped her go through terrible times, especially when they had to leave their children behind, and she was relieved that he was still there for her. That she would still be able to love him and cherish him till death did them apart.
"Shhh, it's okay. I am all right. We will all be okay, better than okay." Jack said.
Soon enough, Caroline raised her head and looked him in the eyes. Once again, like the first time she had met him, she was mesmerized by the beauty of his soul that was reflected in his eyes.
"I love you so much. I don't know what I would have done without you." Caroline said.
Before Jack had time to react in any way, Caroline started kissing him with all the pent up passion and love that she had. It was a kiss that spoke of love, promise, and the eternal connection of two souls that had been through too many trials but were finally able to see a way out, a beacon of hope.
Jack returned the kiss with as much love and dedication. Their marriage was once again sealed with a kiss. Their vows were renewed, in the spare room of Zizi's house with the strong smell of plants permeating the air and it was just perfect.
Once they broke the kiss, their eyes were shining with pure joy but they knew that someone could come in any moment and they would better stop until things got too heated up. Knowing teenagers, they were pretty sure that seeing one's parents making out wasn't something they would approve of.
"We need our own room." Jack groaned.
It seemed as if his wound no longer bothered him and all his focus was on his lovely wife. He wanted to have more than a few fleeting moments with her.
"We need our own house. I mean we, the girls and Nat. Zizi is very welcoming, but her house wasn't made for a large family, it was made for one person." Caroline said.
"How are we to make our own house? We have no idea how that is done!" Jack said.
"Maybe we should have a family meeting. That way, someone might share an idea, or Zizi might tell us how she made her house. I am sure she didn't do it by herself. Well, first of all, we need to ask her if we could stay and then start discussing the living arrangments." Caroline said.
"You are right. We should offer to help out with the farm in exchange for our stay and everything else she might need." Jack said.
"Yes, that sounds fair. I'll go get the others. You are too weak to move, so we might as well have the meeting here." Caroline said.
Before she left the room, she couldn't resist stealing another kiss from the man of her dreams. She had a feeling that they wouldn't have a lot of alone time any time soon, so she wanted to take advantage of what they had as much as she could.
After another lingering kiss, Caroline finally exited the room and went in search of others. It took her some time to gather all of them, but when she finally did, they all entered Jack's room ready to figure things out.
As everyone settled down, Jack cleared his throat getting everyone's attention. Although he was a bit nervous, he didn't let it show as he started what would be first in many family meetings.
"First of all Zizi, I would like to thank you for all that you have done for my family and me. You saved our lives, literally," Jack said.
"Oh, don't mention it. I would do anything for my little munchkin's family." Zizi said.
It was the first time Rina had ever seen Zizi blush, and she found it incredibly cute. It was obvious that Zizi was happy to help and that she liked their company.
"However, I fear we must impose on you even further. Would it be too much of a burden if we were to stay here?" Jack asked.
"Of course not, my dear. I would be happy to have you for as long as you wish to stay." Zizi said.
"How does forever sound?" Jack asked.
Both Zizi and Rina were shocked by the announcement. So much so that Zizi failed to answer the question. Misinterpreting her lack of response, Jack started explaining further.
"Of course, we would help out with the chores and make our own house. We will do our best to help you out as much as we can." Jack said.
"Of course, my dear. Do forgive the old woman's brain for taking some time to process the news as happy as those. I would love to have all of you here. It would be so nice to have some company. You see, I've run away from false friends, but I've lost even true friends, so I am happy to share my land with you." Zizi said.
Before Rina had a chance to scream in delight, which Jack could see coming, he decided to go on with his inquiry.
"We were also wondering how did you go about building the house? I think, beautiful as this house is, that we will need a place of our own, but I am not sure how to do that." Jack asked.
At that moment, Rina's eyes started shining even more in delight. It felt to the others as if her favorite moment was coming.
"Zizi, didn't you say that great-grandpa had built this house all by himself. Can't we do the same?" Rina asked.
"Yes, that is true, but I am afraid a bunch of city folk such as yourselves can't do the same. I know someone who can help us. He already thinks I am a crazy old bat (and he loves me for it) so he won't ask any questions. How does that sound?" Zizi asked.
"Sounds perfect. I don't know how we will ever be able to repay you for your kindness." Jack said.
"No need. As long as my pumpkin is happy, I am happy." Zizi said.
With further arrangments being made for Zizi to ask the guy to come the next day to discuss house building, the family meeting ended. However they thought the day would go, none of them expected it would end with plans for building a house.
