Chapter 26
Serena thought that the voice addressing them sounded familiar, but she couldn't believe it.
The voice didn't belong to that place, that time.
It was the voice of her past, of friendship and support.
The voice of the only person who was there for her when she needed support when she needed a shoulder to lean on.
It was her friend Nathaniel.
"What are you doing here? How did you find me?" She asked.
"Is that how you treat a friend? It was actually pretty easy. You weren't really hiding, you know.
Besides, did you really think that I would just let you walk away when I finally found you? Why would you do this to me, again!
How could you leave me once more? I thought we had each other's backs and then you just left me with those idiots, twice." Nathaniel said exasperatedly.
"I am sorry. I just didn't know what else to do. It was the only way to keep you away from the mess my life turned into.
I wanted to protect you. After all, you are my best friend." Serena said her voice strained with emotion.
"Best friend? You said that you MIGHT have some friends, you never mentioned the best friend."Rina said confused.
"You never even talked about me!? Did you even think about me at all in the past year? Have I just made a fool of myself for someone who is no longer my best friend?" Nathaniel asked as he sat down on the bench.
He seemed drained from all the different emotions that were flooding his heart.
"Rina and I met recently, so I haven't told her much about anything. And Rina, I didn't tell you about Nat being my best friend because I thought I ruined our friendship by disappearing.
Besides, aren't we focusing on the wrong things. What did you mean when you said you had your own theories? How much of our conversation did you overhear?" Serena asked.
It was difficult enough for Rina and Serena to deal with all the mess in their lives, she didn't want another person mixed up in the mystery of it all.
"You could never ruin our friendship, Rena, we have been through too much together to let one measly year without contact ruin it all. "He said as a huge grin spread across his face.
"What I heard is everything. You girls, sure aren't good at hiding things. I am surprised how you managed to keep your invisibility a secret until now.
By the way that's awesome, I mean the fact that you guys can turn invisible." He said turning into the excited geek Serena knew and loved.
"While I do consider your theory as a valid one. I, as a connoisseur of all the possible science fiction movies, must point out that I am more inclined towards the scientific side of things.
I mean sure a curse sounds plausible. In a world where being invisible is possible anything could happen, but I don't buy it.
Why would anyone curse you to become invisible? What do they gain from that?" Nat said pondering their issue like it was the most normal thing ever.
Rina just sat there with her mouth wide open listening to the strange boy talking like invisibility was the most normal thing in the world like it was any other Wednesday.
If Rina had found out that one of her friends and her newly found sister were invisible she would have freaked out. She wouldn't know what to say or do, but there he was spewing out theories without even introducing himself.
It was so strange to Rina to be around someone like him. He was talkative and energetic and didn't seem to mind that he just met her.
He acted like they had known each other for a while and this was just another thing they did in their free time, sitting on the park bench discussing their plight of invisibility.
Deciding whether she was annoyed by the boy or if he was a breath of fresh air was impossible for Rina.
Instead of trying to figure him out or what she thought about him, she settled for listening to what he had to say.
"I think that what is happening to you two might be a consequence of a scientific experiment gone wrong.
I mean think about it. They are often trying to invent something new to better human lives and often times they make mistakes that create new viruses and diseases.
An accident would make a lot of sense in your situation since at the moment no one has any use of you two." He said stroking his chin in a thinking pose that Rina found ridiculous.
"Mom did say that there were some people looking to use us."Rina pointed out.
So they filled Nat in on the details he was missing and it seemed like he found it all logical, like small pieces of the puzzle were fitting together perfectly.
Rina and Serena couldn't see it. Maybe it was because they were too close to the problem, but they couldn't see how it all made sense to Nat when nothing made sense to them.
"Yes, it fits. Your parents could have been involved in a secret government experiment that had gone wrong and now the government is trying to silence them.
The invisibility might have been infused in your parents' genes by accident and in turn to yours.
I knew I should have paid more attention to those kinds of movies but it's just too much to remember!" Nat exclaimed, angry at himself.
"Nat, calm down. Remember we talked about this. When you get overexcited about things, you tend to make a lot of conspiracy theories that are far from possible.
Our parents are not some secret agents, they are just some people with bad luck." Serena said in a soothing voice.
Nat was her best friend, the one person who understood her completely, but he tended to get lost in his comics and movies and forget about the rules of reality.
It made a lot of problems for him in school, but Serena was there to help him out, the same way he helped her out every time she felt depressed or alone.
They were keeping each other sane in an insane world.
But his theories sounded too far-fetched, like many others he had. However, it made her think.
How sure was she that those were just theories.
"Are you sure about that?" Nat asked undeterred in his assumption.
She wasn't sure. No one was.
Their parents could be rocket scientists, for all they knew.
Rina just kept staring at the two of them trying to figure out what was happening and how all of a sudden this guy she just met became part of their story.
It was obvious that he would do anything for his friend but that only made Rina feel even more uncomfortable.
She never had anyone like that and didn't know how to behave towards people like that.
Luckily for her, Nat was capable of holding the conversation by himself, so she didn't have to bother thinking about what to say to him.
After all, maybe it was good for them to have another person's perspective.
A perspective of someone who could see their whole situation objectively.
Maybe his help would enable them to find the answers to their questions sooner and with that some semblance of a solution to their problem.
