Chapter 10

Once she turned the corner, she realized there was a girl being bullied by the meanest girls in school. They seemed to bully her just because she was smart, and she did her best in school. Rina found that ridiculous because the girl didn't do anything to them, she didn't deserve to be treated that way. Upon trying to approach them she realized that there was nothing she could do to help, the other girls were stronger and the rest of the student body ignored her cries for help. As the girls got more violent, she realized that the help wasn't coming. She wasn't sure if it was because people didn't generally care one way or the other, or they simply couldn't hear her calling for help. "Am I that invisible that no one hears me when I am calling for help?" She thought. But instead of starting a pity party she got an idea of how she might be able to help the poor girl who was by that moment crying loudly and shaking in fear. Instead of letting her empathy get the best of her Rina started focusing on the feeling of being invisible. She was focused on that feeling in her gut that often told her that she was just air which no one noticed, no one cared. Instead of stopping all those negative feelings from overwhelming her, as she usually did, she let them free. Allowing that feeling to consume every part of her soul and heart was painful because she hated the feeling of being alone and unloved, but she was ready to go past the pain to help someone out. Finally, after a few more moments of excruciating emotional pain, she was able to turn invisible. It was the first time she turned invisible on command, and she was secretly proud of herself.

Having no time to lose she tried to think of a way to deal with the girls but after a quick consideration, she decided to go with the simplest method. She harshly pulled one of the bullies from the poor girl and the others started turning around, probably wondering who was interfering in their business, but they saw no one. Instead of backing off they continued to call the cowering girl names, and Rina was suddenly overcome by anger. "Get away from her!" she yelled using her most intimidating voice. Surprisingly enough, it worked but maybe that had more to do with the fact that the girls couldn't see where the voice was coming from than with Rina's not-so-intimidating voice. Suddenly, the bullies turned completely white and one of them started muttering. "Whooo...sa..id that?" At that moment Rina got a sudden ridiculous inspiration and decided to use it the best she could. Still trying to use an intimidating and strong voice she said: "I am the ghost of the bullied girl who died in these corridors! I will not allow anyone to be bullied like I was. So you better walk away from the girl if you don't want to be haunted for the rest of your life!" For a moment the bullies just stood there frozen from fear and that is when she gave them a not-so-gentle shove, away from the frightened girl. They scrambled up and hurried off as the girl's sobbing started receding. "Are you still here?" She asked in a small but gentle voice. "Yes," Rina said using a similarly mild voice. "Thank you." The girl said smiling gently through her teary eyes. "You are welcome." was her response. "Are you really a ghost?" The cautious question interrupted Rina's retreat. "That's a long story, and I am in a bit of a hurry. Be careful! See you around. Well, I'll see you, you won't see me." Rina said as she walked away chuckling softly to herself at her own ridiculous words. She needed to try to turn visible as soon as possible.

Once she went back to the only place she could think of, the bathroom, of course, she started working on being back to her regular self. Surprisingly enough, it worked very quickly since she could focus on the fact that the girl she helped was kind enough to say thank you. It was rare for her to hear those words from anyone and it made her feel warm and cozy, it made her feel visible and important enough. Many people would have just run away at the thought of being around the ghost but the girl was polite enough to express her gratitude although Rina was invisible. It was the first time in years that there was some kindness moving in her general direction. It felt so good that in a matter of minutes she was able to turn back to normal. "Hm, I think I am getting a hang of this but I still need to figure out why this is happening and I have no idea how to do that. I tried the library and there is nothing there but pure science fiction so maybe I should try a different approach. But what would be a good approach for me to find out why I am turning invisible in the first place? " After thinking about it for a long time she decided to try out the scientific approach. She didn't know a lot about science, so she decided to by some books from the bookstore with her own money. It was painfully obvious that her mother would never give her the needed money and it was good that she still had enough money saved up from her job. Having no idea how she would use science to figure out what was wrong with her she still thought it was better than doing nothing. It was definitely better than telling her mother. Firstly, she decided to buy the necessary books and then to use the school's labs to check her blood samples and go from there.
