Y'ALL!!!!
GAY GOD IS REAL AND HE LOVES US
PROOF OF GAY GOD sbfjjshhdjd
but real talk, i wanna say some words about this film
This film is, at its most basic, general definition, about a universal experience: being an outsider, wanting to fit inside of yourself when others don't want you to, when you can't afford to. Everyone has felt that, at one point or another. And yes, everyone has the right to identify with this movie.
But I'm personally affronted by the idea that some believe that this isn't a film for queer people. A film for people who feel sexual and romantic attraction to the same sex. I've seen a lot of people claiming that the "point isn't that they're black and gay, but the point is that love, no matter what your sexual orientation, can realign what you believe about yourself and the world around you."
For any other movie, that's a legitimate sentiment. For this movie? That's a crock of shit. And incredibly revealing as to the thought process of those saying it.
You (some moderate heterosexuals (sorry, im about to go full swj)) can't claim this movie as your own. This movie IS about gay love, it IS about being gay, it IS about being a disadvantaged minority in a world that works against you from start to fucking finish. It is not yours. You cannot generalize it to fit your experience when you have never felt that kind of fear, that kind of deep disgust at your own desires and impulses. Moonlight is about an experience you will never live and it is for people who have lived through that, who are living through that.
It makes me legitimately angry to see "the point isn't that they're gay." Because that's the fucking point. Don't project your heteronormativity onto us; we are proud to be gay, we are proud to love the same gender. The movie climaxes with the acknowledgement (and celebration of the freedom that comes with that acknowledgement) that Chiron wants Kevin, not: "that's not really the point, Kevin could be a woman, liberal straight people can identify with this movie too!"
Kevin COULDN'T be a woman. That WOULD take away from the movie and how it affects real queer people everywhere. Chiron is gay - not that the notion shouldn't be treated with the respectful subtlety it deserves.
But the phrase "incidental homosexuality"? I'm sorry, but there's no such fucking thing. I am queer. I exist. I am not incidental. Chiron's feelings were never incidental. The queer experience has shaped all of us, consciously, and not incidentally.
This movie is about Chiron finally touching a man that he loves, being touched deeply by a man that he loves. Not to be "sanitized" by heteronormativity. It's not fucking bromance. This movie is about Chiron on the waterfront, in the moonlight, liberated.
It's about - and for - us.
Anyway lmao moonlight is an amazing tribute to queer people and queer people of color and I am so fucking glad it exists for us to have, because it's OURS and it is a sign of the world changing and evolving
thank you moonlight 👭💕👬💕

p.p.s. not relevant but i loved arrival with all my heart so if you wanna watch any oscar noms i would highly recommend that :)
