nothing is binary, a.k.a: trump is our overlord

When ppl ship shame sherlolly/adlock shippers for shipping theorized gay people w straight people when literally all they do is ship canon straight people in gay relationships: yikes

When people dictate your reading of subtext or text by telling you to "take off your heteronormative lens, you're being easily tricked by society's standards" when you're literally fucking gay and have no such lens to speak of: yikes

When someone whose handle sounds like schuietlyschwim defines every lgbtq experience as their own and states their queer readings condescendingly towards dissenters as fact: yikes

I'm so fucking tired of this narrative where minorities are delicate little things that need to be treated gently lest the Big Evil Majority hurt our tender feelings

It's so fucking...

Authoritarian? I think we as a community, in general, depend a lot on what other people think of us, because if we don't work with the majority, we're trampled underneath it. And I think, born of that is an automatic reaction to either cower or entirely subvert the majority based on resentment.

It fundamentally serves as a kind of defense mechanism, I think, to radicalize people into two main groups: moral, amoral; normal, abnormal, etc. Like with today's current dilemma of trump, outsiders are terrorists, insiders are safe, "let's build a wall," yknow, DANGEROUS AND HATEFUL rhetoric.

And the most disappointing thing, is for all our pushing for social binaries to be broken down, we do the exact same thing as trump does: we like to simplify our views on people we're threatened by.

Everyone does.

Thus, we put people into "opposite" groups, too. White, POC. Transgender, cisgender. Gay, straight. Theists, atheists. Pro-choice, anti-choice. Ciswhitestraightmales, The Rest Of Us.

This extends into moral labels. Racist, not racist, phobic, not phobic. We employ these labels on people to feel safe, to know who to avoid.

But the problem lies in that: people are almost NEVER binary. These aren't OPPOSITES, they're on a spectrum. People are always changing, always forming new opinions based on things around them. Always sliding around on the scale, becoming more complex.

We want people to embrace the non binary, but tbfh,,,, some people are so fucking militant about it, it turns into this perverse diversity where every socially conscious person is reduced to be part of a binary mob mentality where All Men Are Pigs and Theism is For Idiots and Everything Str8 is HOMOPHOBIA; BEWARE THE HETTIES!!!

and to be honest? I am fucking sick to death of this self congratulatory culture on tumblr where straight white people pat themselves on the back for being "unproblematic." I am sick of men hating. I am sick of condescension and hate towards people that have their own life experiences that affect their view on social issues.

I'm gonna say something really contrary, but factual: if you think everyone that's been r****d and was impregnated from it agrees with abortion, you'd be wrong. I'm not bringing this up to defend pro-life because I fundamentally disagree with it, but I am bringing it up to say that life is NOT a binary of people who are evil and people who are good. Even if the woman I'm referring to above is part of a tiny minority, her experience is just as valid as anyone else's. People should feel free to be annoyed by it, disagree with her stance, whatever, but people can't pretend that dissenting opinions aren't out there, and assume that if they are, they aren't validated by past experiences.

The thing that annoys me most about schuietlyschwim is their lowkey militancy. In selling their talking points they throw people under the bus. In convincing people of their ideology for tjlc, they alienate another, more moderate group, and as a result, alienate moderates beyond the landscape of their videos into a generally negative fandom tone. They do what a lot of prominent tjlcers (and trump lol) do, they put people on opposing teams. A really obvious one is "the *shivers* antis." Just another negative name that divides us from Them.

I find people to be heteronormative in their thought processes towards thinking that johnlock couldn't be canon, but I don't say they're all homophobic or heteronormative. Some of them might be, on varying levels, but that's the thing: cultural attitudes aren't binaries. Even evil things, distasteful as they may be, aren't binaries.

In conclusion, death to radical authoritarian liberalism bc you can ship whatever the fuck you want to and no one can put you into a binary based on that

the only one term we can use to encompass our collective selves completely is "human."

An essay titled:

I think we all have more in common with Donald Trump than we think,,,, or: fandom dynamics applicable to the euro-centric social landscape today 👍
