oh jeez

This isn't really a meta or anything bc i suck at writing essays and the like

But i would like to talk about her and what she means for sherlock and what she means for the plot and characterization and obviously, johnlock

(by the way amanda abbington is honestly fav so this is just about her character)

Okay so I decided to do this bc I was reading comments and I got a comment from Cococat811 that I thought was really interesting. Paraphrasing, it was about Mary being a good guy because she was willing to do anything to keep John happy and healthy.

I thought this was so interesting because you could see it that way. She's certainly dedicated to John in a very fierce way.

But in the end

My opinion is

Mary is a piece of manipulative garbage that's going to end up being a season 4/5 villain. And I'm saying as a person. As a character she's KICKASS and I love her and I want her to ruin Sherlock's life B)

Let's talk about His Last Vow, which is essentially a cinematic masterpiece and no one can tell me otherwise.

In His Last Vow, Sherlock is trying to break into Magnussen's office to recover files for Lady Smallwood, and then he finds Mary.

MARY: Is John with you?
SHERLOCK (shakily): He's, um ...
MARY (firmly): Is John here?
SHERLOCK: He-he's downstairs.
(She nods.)

The very first thing she asks Sherlock is if John is there with him. She does this to determine if she can kill them both without making John a suspect in their murders. If John hadn't been there, Sherlock would have definitely been dead. She makes sure, above all else, that John never knows that she's an assassin in fear that he'll leave her, and allowing Sherlock to live jeopardizes that. If given the choice, she would have executed Sherlock in cold blood.

She nearly does again in this scene:

MARY: You were very slow.
SHERLOCK (over phone): How good a shot are you?
(She reaches inside her coat, pulls out her pistol and cocks it, holding it down by her side.)
MARY: How badly do you want to find out?

Until Sherlock says:

SHERLOCK (over phone): If I die here, my body will be found in a building with your face projected on the front of it. Even Scotland Yard could get somewhere with that.

Ignoring the fact that she shot (and actually did flatline, WHICH EVERYONE FORGETS) John's best friend, the action of lying to someone day in and day out to preserve your personal relationship with them is in incredibly selfish and manipulative. You're depriving them of the right to have the choice to leave. Mary is beyond selfish, she's abusive as well.

None of what she did was for John. It was her. She didn't tell him because she didn't want him to fall out of love with her. She wanted him to have this relationship with him that was based off of lies.

Not only that, but later - and this makes me feel a burning, fiery hatred for her, she blames her lying to John... on John?

JOHN (lifting his left hand and gently punching the arm of the chair): Perfect(!) So that's what you were? An assassin?
(He looks towards Sherlock.)
JOHN: How could I not see that?
(He turns back towards Mary.)
MARY: You did see that.
(John's humourless and slightly murderous smile is back on his face.)
MARY (pausing for a moment): ... and you married me.

ugh she's awful

if someone - a boyfriend, a girlfriend, a friend - says this to you, ever, fucking run for the hills.

What she did transcended physical abuse. It was literal murder.

This is the equivalent of a physically abusive husband saying, "You knew I was abusive, and you married me, so it's your fault this happened."

Maybe the wife did see that. Is it her fault she's being abused? Fuck no! Mary is manipulative and extremely good at it.

In terms of the plot, i was kinda hoping mary died in childbirth for the angst but honestly she's such a major badass that it's unlikely she will until the end of season four.

The plot is really gonna be based on her a lot, I can tell, it's gonna be super awesome and great yes

Also i love sherlock bc he was willing to die so mary would be safe bc he knew that john loved her ew

This show sucks, i hate it ugh
