4 The Straitjacket
POV Hiccup
I really love spending time in the kennels. It's like every dog has this huge amount of wisdom in them. Again in the early morning I go to meet my dog. Either Toothless is super wise and refuses to co-operate because of that or he just hates me. Or it's probably both?
"Toothless!" I called and I let out a whistle. I see other dogs coming to their cage doors. Each dog has their own cage and it's a big line of cages in the corridor when you go inside the kennel areas.
Only one cage had no dog appearing on the cage. Yeah, only one would have such a way to act.
"Hey Toothless," I greeted as I went to kneel down in front of his cage. My black beast is chewing a toy in the corner and ignoring me. He whips his tail from side to side in excitement as he pulls out an arm from his stuffed toy.
"They said that I shouldn't give you toys but I think that puppies need toys," I smiled as I sat on the floor. I keep on observing its actions through the cage door.
My fingers are rubbing against the leash which I'm holding. I'm eager to start our training together. Captain Frost said that our dog will be our companion, become part of us. I need to tame this buddy.
I'm holding my breath as I open the cage door. Now I'm standing in the open doorway. Toothless turns around and faces me. It starts to growl at me, that little puppy is trying to act big.
"Calm down, I won't harm you. We're just going out for a walk," I suggested smiling but then it barked. Other dogs begun to bark with him and I sigh. I see its eyes being nailed at the leash.
Maybe it hates the sight of leash?
Quickly I threw it out from the cage and my dog stopped its barking and finally it sat down. It jerked it's head to side and it is staring at me with its green eyes.
"So we could be friends?" I smile and I crouch down. I reach my hand to pet its head but it growls again and backs up. I sigh and sat to floor.
Now it's playing again put it seems like it likes to keep distance at me. I rub my neck and I try to think of how to get it to like me more. Maybe some treats? That's worth a shot tomorrow.
The hour was already quite late. I had to rush to our water exercise practice.
"See you tomorrow Toothless," I smiled as I close the cage door. The puppy is still running around the cage in excitement and playing when I leave.
POV Jack (A/N: *wiggles eyebrows*)
I'm crouching down on the edge of a pool. Slowly I place my hand into the water. "It's too warm Lieutenant," I say Ariel. She's the head of our water exercises. She swings her long red hair back and frowns.
"Well cool it down Captain Frost," she hummed and crossed her arms. I roll my eyes and touch the water. Now it's way colder.
I stood up, waving the water drops off from my hand which I then stuff inside my jacket's pocket. "Listen, Lieutenant Atlantiqa, they need their breath to be taken away in the exercise. In the war there's no nice warm swims in a pool that's in the back yard of training base. It's usually just plain, harsh and cold waters," I shouted and pointed towards the water that's now near it's freezing point.
"Just like you... plain, harsh and cold," Lieutenant Atlantiqa mumbled and I sigh.
"I pretend that I didn't hear that," I hiss to her.
"Fine! You handle your squad's water training since you are so good in it," she said and lifted her chin up. She walks away sassily and I rub my forehead.
Women are so sensitive. Another proof. I wonder why Colonel Moon won't kick all the girls out already if they act up.
After a moment I see my squad walking to the pool training grounds. I hear them wondering where Lieutenant Atlantiqa is. There's a slight hint of fear in their voice which makes me grin. They should be afraid because I won't let them go by easy.
I made them line up and then I go to get my bag. They are whispering again, wondering what I'm doing.
"Strip to your underwear," I told them strictly. While I was getting things out from the bag. They have no idea what awaits them.
When I go back to them, holding the straitjacket I see that they did as I told them. "You're first Private Fitzherbert," I said as I throw the straitjacket to him. He turns it in his hands, still in shock.
"B-but Captain. Aren't we having water training again today?" Private Arendelle questioned.
"Stop whining and help that on him—," I snapped at Private Arendelle. However I pause and my face feels hot. She's wearing a set of black bra and underwear.
"Captain just had the hots," I heard Private Fitzherbert laughing quietly to Haddock who was helping him to wear the straitjacket.
I froze and I turn my head towards Fitzherbert. Should I punch him? Maybe but I would be suspended.
"Beware Private Fitzherbert. I might double your time in water... and personally hold you under water," I hissed. Quickly he apologized and Haddock put the jacket on him more quickly.
I sigh and glance at Arendelle, "Put your t-shirt on."
"You said that we should be on our underwear," Private Arendelle questioned my order.
"I didn't ask. Put it on," I groaned. "I can't stand the sight of you. If you want to present your figure just go to work in Playboy," I snap at her. Now I see her grabbing her t-shirt from ground and putting it on.
We all watched how Fitzherbert was standing in pool for thirty minutes. Slowly his lips were turning blue and he was shivering.
"Last you should go under water and not come out until you are free from straitjacket," I told him. Well, I'm not that cruel but better make them desperate and try. That's how they might survive in war. Physical and mental challenge is the key.
I watch as he dives under water and to the deep end of the pool where I told him to go. Slowly I see his powers wearing off and I nod to Hamada. He dives into the water and lifts Fitzherbert up. Hamada is gasping because of the cold and Fitzherbert catches his breath.
Next up was Hamada. He could do about twenty minutes in the cold waters but he actually got himself out from the straitjacket. I glance at the sun which was daring to heat up my water. While they were dressing the straitjacket to Private Arendelle I quickly cool down the water again when no one was looking.
Arendelle glares at me when she steps into the water. I'm surprised to see that she didn't react to the breath taking cold water at all.
"Elsa! You should stop. You might die, it's super cold," Hamada yelled to Arendelle. I look at my wrist watch, she's been in the water for over an hour. My eyes wander to look at her lips, they are still the same rosy pink shade as when she went into the water. Weird.
"Cold never bothered me," Private Arendelle replied. Her voice didn't even crack.
"We don't have all day," I yelled. There was still Haddock who should try the exercise. I ordered her to get into the deeper side of the pool.
She glances at me nervously and I frown. She starts to walk towards the deeper end and I hear how she takes in a deep breath before disappearing under surface. This will be a total failure I thought as I cross my arms. She's now laying against the bottom of the pool and I see how she tries to get her hands from behind her back to front.
I glance at my wrist watch. She's been under for thirty seconds.
"She can do it!" Haddock cheered and my mouth hang open when I saw her getting her hands over her body. Maybe because she is a girl she's stretchy?
Something changed suddenly. She got stuck in the next step, she was panicking and I see how she let all of her air out from her lungs and she was twitching. Soon she would drown.
"Get her out Haddock," I sighed. When he took a step towards the pool I notice a weird blue glow around Arendelle.
"STOP!" I yelled and I heard Fitzherbert wondering the same thing I wondered moment before. Suddenly something exploded inside the pool and I feel the air getting cold around us.
"W-where did that ice come from?" Hamada whispered as the smoke cloud evaporated. My arms drop down as I look at a thick layer of ice covering the pool. I run to it and so did my trainees.
"It fucking froze!" Haddock yelled and tried to kick it. It didn't break.
I look under the ice, private Arendelle is no longer moving. I touch the ice but I can't get it to melt.
"Dismiss," I told to my squad. "DISMISS! Scatter!"I shouted as I run towards a nearby gun shelter. I see how reluctant squad members run off. Finally.
"WIND!" I call out and soon I find myself running faster. A gust of wind follows me into the gun shelter and the windows explode because of the force of the air wave. My heart is beating rapidly as I choose a shotgun.
I run out and I jump into air. Quickly I flew over the pool and I float above it. I aim the shot gun at the surface and after single shot there's a crack. I threw the weapon away and I shot myself towards the pool.
My landing was strong with my feet first. It made the ice crack and I fell into the water's cold embrace. When I open up my eyes I see private Arendelle against the bottom in the deep end. I swim to her quickly and grab her.
When I glance up I see how the shattered ice is again freezing and the hole is disappearing. I support my legs against the bottom and I crouch down, using my legs like a spring I jump up just moments before the hole would have been too narrow.
She wasn't breathing when we landed.
I move my hand over the straitjacket which froze. I shatter it quickly, freeing her from its squeezing. I open up her airways by opening her mouth. I pinch her nose with my other hand while other keeps her jaw open. I blew into her mouth couple times and then I press her chest.
"C'mon Private," I yelled before continuing. Few tries later she spits the water out from her and she's breathing. Her gaze makes me feel like she's in some different world right now.
Slowly I place my arms around her but suddenly she wraps her arms around my neck. I startle when her lips press against mine for couple seconds. "Mmmhh... mints," she laughs quietly and then she passes out. What the fuck is wrong with her?
I scoop her up to my arms and her head is resting against my chest. When I walk past the pool I see that it's melting slowly by the sun. I glance at Arendelle.
"So your power is ice making," I hummed. She's still numb and unconscious.
"You should get the fuck out from the army you know. Panicking like that, this is why girls should stay out from here," I mumble. Her hair has opened up from bun and now it rests as a French braid over her body.
I left Private Arendelle to sick barrack and before going to my own barrack I visited the squads barrack. I told them that she's under surveillance for this day and will be back in training tomorrow. Her squad mates seem happy because of the news.
At my barrack I jump to my bed. I'm staring at the wooden ceiling.
"So her power is ice," I sigh aloud. The candidates have no idea of my father's great idea of bringing talented people together. Some of them are just really smart but some have special type of powers.
I wasn't the stronger one when I was born, I had to fight for it. My father told me that they had to name me when I was born because they weren't sure if I would make it.
Slowly I wave my hand in air and a snowflake appears. I love the fact how flawless each snowflake is but yet each one is different.
Jack Frost, I inherited my father's old nickname in the army.
A sudden knock at my door startled me and I stood up quickly. The snowflake disappeared and I walk to the door.
"Colonel Moon wants to see you Captain," Lieutenant Atlantiqa glared at me. I sigh and nod my head. I took my hat and place it to my head as I walk out.
When I reach Colonel Moon's office I knock it and he tells me to get in.
"You called me," I told him as I step in.
"Yes I did, sit down Captain Overland," Colonel Moon told me. I did as he told me and then I waited.
"So now you know about Private Arendelle's power?" Colonel Moon told me. He has a name plate on his desk as well as an ironic family portrait of five people.
I look at his name plate saying 'James Moon' as he turns around with his chair. His white hair is messy and he smiles to me kindly, his blue eyes are shining brighter than the moon.
"I do," I replied and I take my hat off.
"I would like you to teach her with that power when she tells you about it. You know how we let our candidates reveal themselves when they want. Now she was kinda knocked out," he laughed warmly.
My eyes widen. Teach her?
"NO WAY! I won't! Besides girls don't belong in the army! You know what happened? Father," I hissed while standing up quickly. The chair which I sat on fell down and I'm leaning against the table.
"Dismiss," he told me blankly. His eyes had now this sad sight. It serves him right. I give him one other angry glare before I storm out.
I'm cursing my father in my mind as I head to the Den. It's soldier's hang out place. There you can play games to kill time and meet others at the training base. However at this hour it's usually free. People are having their dinner by now.
When I got into the Den building I immediately unbutton my jacket and I threw it on the chair after taking it off and leaving only my white collar shirt on. My eyes are locked into one object which I go to directly.
It's an old looking piano, not like those fancy ones in classic music but that kind of type which you could see on pub or tavern. I open up the cover to expose the keys. I try them out and they seem to be tuned.
"Good," I hum and sit on the bench in front of the piano. I glance at the carved snowflake pattern in the upper part of the rough wooden surface.
I'm playing the first parts of the melody and I hum the song quietly. Then I close my eyes and let my fingers move by their own over the keys. Then I start to sing a song that has been ringing in my head ever since I met my father.
(A/N: Don't you worry child – Swedish house mafia)
"There was a time
I used to look into my father's eyes.
In a happy home
I was a king, I had a golden throne.
Those days are gone,
Now the memory's on the wall.
I hear the songs
From the places where I was born.
Upon a hill across a blue lake,
That's where I had my first heartbreak.
I still remember how it all changed.
My father said,
"Don't you worry, don't you worry, child.
See heaven's got a plan for you.
Don't you worry, don't you worry now."
Yeah!
"Don't you worry, don't you worry, child.
See heaven's got a plan for you.
Don't you worry, don't you worry now."
Yeah!
There was a time
I met a girl of a different kind.
We ruled the world,
I thought I'd never lose her out of sight.
We were so young,
I think of her now and then.
I still hear the songs
Reminding me of a friend.
Upon a hill across a blue lake,
That's where I had my first heartbreak.
I still remember how it all changed.
My father said,
"Don't you worry, don't you worry, child.
See heaven's got a plan for you.
Don't you worry, don't you worry now."
Yeah!
Oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh!
See heaven's got a plan for you
"Don't you worry, don't you worry, child.
See heaven's got a plan for you.
Don't you worry, don't you worry now."Yeah!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
Yeah!"
When the song ended I slam my hands on the keys. I'm breathing heavily as I stand up and rush past the chair where my jacket is. I grab it and throw it on me. The pain is way too much again.
