25 Soldier or Not?
POV Astrid
"I can't wait for tomorrow!" Merida laughed and jumped to her bunk bed. Her body weight made her bounce on the springs.
"It is not certain that everyone will be a soldier. Remember how Punzie GoGo ran too fast and fell through ice? She was her waist high in water and freezing when we got her out," I lectured her.
"We all were wet," GoGo added grumpily.
"Thankfully Captain Frost helped us with doing the fire. I mean my fingers were freezing," Punzie gasped. She was again sitting on the support log in the ceiling of the barrack.
"Yeah... does he even hate women? I mean he helped... but it might just be a reason for him to make us fail the test," I wondered aloud as I walk around the barrack.
"Someone should go and seduce him?" Punzie giggled but everyone gave her a glare. "Or maybe not?" She laughed nervously.
Someone knocked our doorframe and waited, quickly I walk for the door but GoGo was faster.
"It's for you," she said in her usual bored way as she swung her hair over her shoulder. She popped her chewing gum that she just blew into a pink ball.
"Thanks," I replied as I went to the door. It was Hiccup.
"Hey Astrid," he smiled warmly and I go out with him.
"Time to see Stormfly and Toothless?" I grinned.
"Yup. Anyway what kind of special talents your squad has?" He asked curiously. He was always keen on planning things and wanted to know all possible solutions to circumstances.
"Let me see--," I began as we were walking towards the kennels.
"Merida is brave and is a great archer, Punzie has magical healing skills, GoGo is super fast – and smartmouthed," I explained.
"And you are best with blunt weapons and strong," Hiccup laughed and made me blush a bit.
"Yeah, yeah--," I said while opening up the kennel door. "And your squad?"
"Hiro is the master of technology, Eugene is great in stealth and a thief, I have some sort of fire soul as Captain said and clever mind... and Elsa...uh," Hiccup said and rubbed his neck.
"You don't know yet?" I asked, I knew that look on Hiccups face.
"Precisely. She keeps it hidden still," Hiccup shrugged.
We went to the cages and got our dogs out. Hiccup was immediately knocked down by Toothless.
"Oh c'mon Buddy!" Hiccup laughed when his dog was licking him. They were now nearly in size of adult, juniors and already really clever. There are still things they need to learn but still they are remarkable.
"He is just keen of you," I teased him as I threw a ball for Stormfly to fetch.
Stormfly brought it back fast. "Good girl!" I cheered and patted its head. It whacked its tail around in excitement.
When it was late I went back to barrack after wishing Hiccup good luck for tomorrow. That's the day when we find out if we're soldiers or not. Some might be retrained or even kicked out depending of the test result. This year's theme was winter which horrified everyone, especially females because it was supervised by Captain Frost who is known of hating women.
It was afternoon when we waited in front of a stage for the speeches. One Captain was missing, all others were sitting on chairs behind Colonel Moon. Then Colonel Moon nodded his head to North who seemed to understand what he meant and left from the stage. He walked to a gymnastic hall building.
"Soon we will start our celebration, in the meantime you're welcome to chat," Colonel Moon smiled.
I saw Elsa coming through the crowd to us. She waved her hand a bit.
"Hey, are the guys excited already?" I asked while smiling.
"Yeah they are, I just wanted to find you too and since J--, Captain Frost, is still missing I was able to make my way here," Elsa smiled warmly.
"Are you going out to the bar too in the evening Els?" Punzie grinned and Elsa nodded her head.
"Yeah, even if I would fail I will. The guys insisted," she laughed a bit.
"Well we will meet you up in the evening at your table but it seems like it's starting," I nodded towards the stage.
Elsa glanced there too and saw how Captain Frost was walking up the stage with Captain North. They got seated and everyone began listening carefully. This is the moment we've been waiting for.
POV Jack
They set up the stage, today Private's will turn into soldiers. A day of celebration for the most but truly they're just signing their own fates. Some of them will die serving the country, once there was a time when I saw it as honorable deed but now it's just all so twisted up.
"Jack? Are you ready? Colonel Moon will say his speech soon," North asked when he narrowed the door to dressing room.
I sigh as I stand up from my seat. Everyone went ahead so I could clear up my mind but there are even more things going on now.
"I am as ready as I can be," I replied to him when I passed him on the corridor. We walk down the corridor and outside from the gymnastic hall.
I glance at the public, how Private's have gathered in enthusiasm around the stage where my father is standing on the speech stall. I see other Captain's seated behind him and I join the others with North.
"Ah, finally everyone is ready. Today is a bright day as the winter is giving us crystal clear weather. Your careers as soldiers for the nation shall be as clear as today. Your Captain's will continue guiding you and now you're ready for your actual missions. Never lose sight from why you joined, never lose faith and trust into your own core," Colonel Moon spoke proudly and then he looks over his shoulder. Directly at me and I turn my head away.
"I certainly lost my way at one point and focused on my career the most. I cared for my family in the army but always remember your families at home since love can turn the odds on your side," Colonel Moon continued. I just huffed when he spoke about family, that man who sent his daughter to her death and just because I let that happen. I let my sister die.
"Now I give the honors to my son, Captain Jackson Overland, he will tell the result of the test," Colonel Moon said and people applauded. I just got up and went to the stand instead of him.
I tap the microphone couple times while watching at it. Then I lift my face up and I look at the green crowd. Everyone is wearing their best uniforms, waiting anxiously if they can put on their soldier signs to their shoulders. Then they would go out in the evening, for celebration.
"Listen up," I raised my voice and the microphone creaked. The crowd got silent, the chattering ended.
"Don't get too high on the idea of you becoming as soldiers. Don't treat your life like it's worth nothing but never leave anyone behind. With these words I would like to my highest disappointment say.... that... all of you passed and are soldiers from now on," I explained and in the end I heard cheering.
I turn my back at the excited new soldiers. Their joy is nearly ripping me apart, more people are now ready to give up their lives so easily.
"And now a song from your Captains! I'm pleased to tell you that this year my son promised to play and even sing for you. Trust me, it's way better than my singing last year," Colonel Moon laughed. Soldiers began to whisper to each other and I try to ignore it when I go to the right side of the stage where a large white fabric is covering something big.
I pull the fabric off and people gasp. I watch how North goes to grab two guitars and he handed other one to Tooth, then I start to pull the piano more center of the stage. Colonel Moon pushes the stand from the way of the view. I began to put the microphone to its place before I sit behind the piano. I glance to my right and I see Sandy and Bunny getting ready with drumsets. They play together always.
The whispers got louder and I sigh into the microphone. It made them quiet down and I close my eyes for a bit, I've not been playing for crowds for ages. My fingers touch the keys and I open my eyes.
"This is a song for every soldier in here... First time in long time I feel like I can play and sing but I might be a bit rusty... Just one more thing, value life?" I mumbled quietly and then I began playing.
I close my eyes when it comes time to sing.
"You fight the daily battles of a million things created of and around what you fear and know and fear not knowing we get thrown into the face of a thousand trains you've trained upon our ears here we are here we are still listening... And you fight the good fight to win until the death over a thing that doesn't care carry any weight at all and doesn't even know it signed up for duty in a war that you created built with the help of those who didn't care but gave you tools supplies and dared you "build a place to hide your fear..."
I will watch you fight the sky
You make them run and hide
You wait for it to die now
I will watch you fight the sky
You make them run and hide
I'll watch you fight the sky now...
I will watch you fight the sky and wait for it to die and we wait and we wait and we wait for a strong wind to pick you up and rip the pain and slam it down into a wall it can't climb up get passed knock down and so we wait... Pick your battles save your force for the fights that really matter but still you demand waiting for the world to understand and to care to know to love and yes to give a damn so if it runs may it hide I will watch you fight the sky...
I will watch you fight the sky
You make them run and hide
You wait for it to die now
I will watch you fight the sky
You make them run and hide
I'll watch you fight the sky now...
The color's changing now the dim light shifting to those across the world who don't know don't care don't worry if you've won... So tell me if it changes fixes curses or remains all the ones you left behind keep nearer still and remind that asking means fighting means winning needs doing and you have won oh now you have won... That asking means fighting means winning needs doing and you have won it all...
I will watch you fight the sky
You make them run and hide
You wait for it to die now
I will watch you fight the sky
You make them run and hide
I'll watch you fight the sky now...
You fight the daily battles of a million things created of and around what you fear and know and fear not knowing we get thrown into the face of a thousand trains you've trained upon our ears here we are here we are still listening...
"
When the song ended I immediately got up and left from the stage. People were cheering but I ignored it.
I heard some steps rushing from behind me. "Jack! C'mon! That was great! You should've stayed," Toothiana panted out when her hand went on my shoulder.
"Well I don't know how I managed to pull it off, anyway... See you at the pub in the evening Tooth," I look at her and gave a faint smile. Then I went ahead, directly to my barrack.
We agreed to meet up at eight in the evening at the bar. There's few hours between so maybe the new soldiers are drunk enough to just ignore us. Usually I would've stayed at my barrack while other Captain's celebrate the new soldiers that they trained but this year I decide to join them. For the first time since Emma died in action.
The Pub was packed when I got inside. My eyes wander around the place, I see new soldiers sitting around tables. Tooth gets up from our usual table and rushes towards me, immediately she jumped in for a hug.
"They were doubting that you would come but I knew you would! You promised! Hey, I asked Shawn not to come here tonight so you're safe," she giggled into my ear and let go.
"Thanks Tooth," I mumbled while I look at clearly irritated Bunny. He is clenching his fists.
I follow Tooth to the table and we pass the table where my squad is sitting. They didn't even pay attention to the fact that I just went past them.
"I still can't believe that we made it! And you Elsa! First ever woman to pass in his squad!" Fitzherbert laughed. He sure had been tasting something stronger than a man.
"Pfft... I know how to handle that guy!" Elsa laughed and my cheeks warmed up. She sounded a bit drunk, we seated to our table and the bartender brought some new drinks to their table.
"Oi, mate. Your fault that I just lost bet," Bunny groaned when I lean back. He is sitting in front of me.
"It would be boring if you would always win," I grinned and then the bartender brought me a red wine bottle.
"You still drink red Frost?" North laughed and hit my back with his hand. He was sitting on my left.
"Do that one more time and your face will be red," I say while gritting my teeth angrily.
"Chill Frostie," North gasped and lifted his hand up. I just roll him my eyes when I pour my glass full. I empty it with few sips, the heat from alcohol is something that I feel right away.
"So who are your squad's brightest candidates?" North asked from all of us.
"I think all of the girls are clever but that healing power of Corona is really useful... even though Merida has great aim," Tooth wondered aloud.
"I can't name one," Bunny shrugged.
"How about you Jack?" North raised his eyebrow.
"Uh... well they have their own special talents like all of them. Arendelle hasn't showed hers though," I muttered. I didn't add that I know her skill but I'm still waiting her to reveal it by her own will.
Loud giggling began to hear from nearby table and it caught our attention. The girls from Tooth's squad had went to my squads table. They were looking pretty familiar with each other.
"I'm daring you!" Corona laughed aloud.
"Well I'm taking the dare!" Elsa cheered aloud. Again that shot competition that gets soldiers wasted as fuck. I drank half of my wine glass.
"Mate... the girl's checking on you," Bunny chuckled and I stare in to the direction where he nodded. My mouth opened up slightly from surprise when Elsa began walking towards me. Not in straight line but still towards our table.
"Shut up Bunny, she's headed to the bar," I groaned and I reached towards my wine bottle to fill up my glass.
"Anyway I really loved Sophie back then. Have you seen her again after that?" Bunny chuckled and I gave her an angry glare, readying myself for snap back at him.
"Hey Captain," Elsa said with flirty voice. It made me knock down the bottle and it fell to the ground. It broke into shards and the wine spread on the ground.
"Told you," Bunny mocked at me.
"Congratulatins Arendelle. Why don't you join us?" North said politely and patted a seat on his other side. Sandy was nodding his head and grinning.
"No she was about to go back to her friends," I said fast.
"Nah Captain! Thank you Captain N-North. I have a good place in here," she giggled and sat to my lap.
"Are you alright sweetie?" Toothiana asked concerned.
"From the looks of it she wants to give Jack his first ride," Bunny teased me and drank some of his beer.
"I swear Bunny that I'll wipe that smirk out from your face soon. She's just drunk," I hissed at Bunny. My other arm was around Elsa as she was balancing on my lap.
"Yes I'm just fine," Elsa snorted. I just wanted to sink under the table.
"You should go to bed," I hinted to Elsa. She was wrapping her arms over my neck.
"I think Jack has got a point," North sighed. Sandy began scribbling down pictures of bed and sleeping.
"Don't be such a party pooper Frostbutt," Bunny snapped.
"Yeah, just have some fun!" Elsa smiled and pinched my cheek.
"OUCH!" I groaned and pulled my face out from her grip.
Instead of giving up she cupped my face between her hands and before I could say anything or stop her she began kissing me. She nearly ripped my jacket off from me but I managed to keep it on by struggling. However I didn't break free from her kiss but I let her do it, my eyes just closed.
When she let go of me I felt my cheeks being hot. Bunny began whistling.
"Whoa. That was intense, beware that you won't be caught for using your squad members," Bunny teased me again and I glared at him.
Elsa leaned close to me, her lips nearly touched my ear as she began to mumble things. "I finished the dare... take me to your bed Jack, I'm tired," she whispered and kissed my cheek.
"What did she say? That you're a coward?" Bunny laughed aloud.
"Nope," I replied blankly.
"Then what?" Bunny continued.
"Stop it," North said to Bunny.
"Or what? That monster will freeze me-aaaah!" Bunny began but then nearly screamed. Elsa gave angry glare towards Bunny and then I figured it out.
"Why did you just freeze my butt!" Bunny groaned. Sandy signaled that it served Bunny right.
"Watch your mouth or I'll freeze your ears to," I said angrily. I frowned and focused on stopping Elsa's power. She was strong and pissed for some reason.
"You're tired, I'm taking you to rest now," I whispered to Elsa. Then she rested her face against my chest when she passed out.
"Jack?" Toothiana said with that motherly tone of hers. Her eyes were questioning me.
"Yup, I'm taking her to get some rest. Goodnight everyone," I said quickly when I picked her up.
"Don't do anything nasty Frost!" Bunny yelled after me. I turn around and I see how a girl goes to clean up the broken wine bottle from the floor. From the looks of it she got a cut into her hand.
"He won't. Right Jack?" Toothiana asked.
"I'm taking her to rest," I shouted above the noise of the music. Now the people around us stopped staring and turned back to chat with the people they were with. Especially the guys from my squad that were looking like they would murder me if I leave from the pub by carrying Elsa out.
Just when I got outside from the Pub North run after me and stopped me.
"What now?" I groaned.
"Are you sure that you want to leave alone? You should be accompanied at this hour. They might send people to try and kill you," he nearly whispered.
I laugh a bit, "The base is pretty near so we're in safety soon. And I'm with her and not alone."
"That's what I'm worried about. I guess you would protect her instead of you?" He asked concerned. I just shrug my shoulders and turn my back at him. He yelled after me, telling me to be safe.
While walking in the snow I hop her better into my arms. "I guess you aren't used to alcohol that much?" I spoke aloud while looking at her. The gate of the base was already at sight and soon we were inside.
Once I got my door lock open I kick the door fully open and go inside. Then I kicked it back closed, carrying her all the way with some alcohol even in my bloodstream made even me feel dizzy. Gently I place her on the bed and then I collapse to sit next to her. I'm catching my breath for a moment before I take off my boots and then hers.
She was really knocked out when I got most of her clothes off. When I got myself ready for bed I pulled the blanket from under her, then I crawled next to her. The blanket covered our bodies and I place my hand carefully over her chest, pulling her close to me. I feel how heat reaches my cheeks again as I look at her with her eyes closed.
Suddenly she inhaled deeply and opened up her eyes a bit. A smile came to her face and she snuggled against me. "Jack," she whispered and entwined her fingers with my hand that was over her body. She was back asleep again.
I let myself lean down on the bed and my face go near her head. She smelled nice, she didn't reek much of alcohol. All of a sudden she turned to her side, her hands went around my body and her head was against my chest. Her warmth felt nice, her presence feels good again.
It felt like I've slept for hours when I woke up in an empty bed. I heard some noises from bathroom that sounded like she wasn't feeling too well. I got up and went to check her out, she was hugging the toilet and sobbing a bit.
"You'll be fine... you just drank too much," I assured her when I kneeled next to her. I tucked her hair into my hand from her way.
When she pulled the toilet I grabbed some paper and handed it to her, she used it to wipe her face. I helped her up and to sit on the edge of my bed. She was holding her head and whining a bit, I got her a glass of water which she drank.
She was staring the floor when she gave me the glass back. "How are you feeling now?" I asked.
"Considering I got wasted and woke up in someone's bed... I'm just fine," she mumbled sarcastically.
"We didn't do nothing this time. Except you were quite keen on sleeping body against body," I laughed a bit and wiped her hair back. Her hairbrand had opened up while she slept and her slightly curled hair was now free.
"Who is Sophie?" She whispered.
"Mmm... So you remember something?" I raised my eyebrow.
"Is she your ex or something?" She gulped and was on verge of tears.
"Where did you figure that kind of stuff out?" I nearly laughed.
"Bunny asked if you've met her lately. Or maybe she's some one night stand?" She sounded bitter.
"Uh, I guess you're still a bit... not yourself Elsa. Sophie is my cousin and I assure you that I haven't done anything indecent with her. You're the first woman in any case who I've had.. umm.. had s--.. made love with," I stuttered out and my face turned red.
Elsa was staring at me in shock. It felt really uncomfortable and I rub my neck. "First? I'm your first?" She insisted and I slowly nod my head.
"Wow. I thought that you've been with lots of women," She gasped and stood up spreading her arms in misbelieve.
"Sometimes I consider you as a woman with multiple sides. I mean now you're acting crazy, sometimes you're super caring or mad and you've even showed your stronger side," I mumbled.
"Says the man who can't decide how he feels!" She raised her voice and crossed her arms.
"What?" I replied in surprise.
"You heard me! You are acting so loving at one point and then you're just cruel. Are we a couple or?" She demanted to know and just before I was able to reply she yawned, sat next to me and passed out against my shoulder. I just sighed and helped her back to bed and to sleep.
"I just know how I shouldn't feel," I say quietly before I kiss her forehead. This time I bother to go and turn off the lights. Then I went back next to her, she was in deep sleep already.
In the morning she insisted that I meet Shawn, that we make up. I tried my best to stay against her but I lost. It will be an awkward reunion.
