18 Fair Kindness
POV GoGo
I'm so excited because today we have some training with Captain Toothiana. She's maybe annoyingly cheerful sometimes but she's a great Captain who knows a lot despite of her girly looks and behavior.
"What do you think that we can try out today?" Punzie whispered and tried to conceal her enthusiasm.
"Maybe some shooting?" Merida questioned.
"We had that last week. I hope that we can drive a vehicle today," I mumbled out.
"I think it's some track exercise," Astrid said and then quieted down. She nodded towards the barrack area and we see how Captain Toothiana is approaching the training field.
Quickly we all lined up and saluted her.
"At ease. Today we'll walk to the sand fields and have something for you to do... better try it out before the ground gets too chilly and hard," she said mysteriously.
We began following her lead and I kept on wondering what we should do. Once we got on the scene Captain Toothiana pulled away a blanket which was resting on the ground. There were shovels for each one of us.
"Take one and then I want you to dig a hole of your size, you should be able to stand inside it and not be seen," she ordered and went to sit on a chair.
"Pick a spot and better start digging!" She giggled.
I look at the army green shovel and I sigh when I go to pick my spot which turned out to be next to Punzies. Punzie pushed her shovel to the sandy like earth and began digging. I did it as well and I realize that the ground was already a bit chilled since it was late October. Unfortunately we couldn't do some fast and furious exercise but we ended up digging our own holes. Literally.
"My shoulders are getting numb," Merida groaned when I was halfway done with my hole after digging a good two hours. It was hard since the walls were collapsing down time to time.
"Try just digging it and not complaining so much," Captain Toothiana said caringly as she brought everyone a water bottle which we took from her with gratitude.
I took a sip from my bottle. Even though it was getting into late autumn the sun was shining in the middle of the day. Also it was annoying to get dust all over you and inside your lungs. Gladly the water felt cleansing.
After two more hours and making sure the walls of the hole were strong enough and collapsing by pressing them tight I climb out from the hole. Then I stand in front of mine and wait while others finish theirs.
Next one to climb out was Astrid, she was always stronger when I was fastest. Next Merida came out from hers and soon after her Punzie.
"We're ready Ma'am!" We shouted in unison and Captain Toothiana stood up and came to examine our holes.
She was circling around the holes and her eyes stared into them keenly. Finally she came to stand in front of us.
"Every soldier needs to learn to dig a hole for their protection, usually even smaller one can be your salvation and by doing it properly you won't have walls collapsing on you and suffocating you," Captain Toothiana began explaining.
Then she was quiet and we all were anxiously waiting. My hands were sweaty behind my back.
"I think they are good. Now climb inside your hole and don't come out before dinner bell which is after two hours," Captain Toothiana ordered.
"Yes Ma'am!" We replied as we jumped down to our holes.
"See you girls later," Captain Toothiana cheered as she left.
We stayed inside our holes in silence. Waiting for the bell to ring felt taking ages and then decades when it began raining.
"WHYYY," Merida whined from her hole. I just imagine how her frizzly hair gets even frizzlier in the rain.
"It can't be much longer," Punzie tried to comfort her.
My clothes were sticking against my back and I hoped that Punzie was right. The clouds sure weren't looking like they would give up any time soon.
Finally the bell rang and we climb up. The edges of the hole felt slippery and muddy, quite disgusting actually. My muscles were aching and I just wished for a warm shower. However we would have some dinner first.
We walk past the training field where we were earlier. I see how Captain Frost is training his troops in rainy October weather even though it's dinner time already. I pause for a moment when I see how Elsa is climbing up a fence and her foot slipped because of the slimy mud on her shoes.
"Heck! Private Arendelle!" Captain Frost yelled and then groaned.
"Oh now she's in trouble. I feel so bad for her," Punzie sighed. She had noticed what was going on and stayed behind with me while Astrid and Merida went ahead to eat. Slowly I nodded my head, even speaking feels to exhausting.
"I know you can do it! Just move one freaking foot above another. Don't fail me this time Arendelle!" Captain Frost shouted and my eyes widened.
"Was that encouragement?" I mumbled quietly.
"I guess so, at least some kind of," Punzie whispered and we began walking towards the Mess hall where we'll get something to fill our empty stomachs.
"Geez Arendelle! You can't be that idiotic that you step in there!" A shout by Captain Frost still came to our way. A sigh escaped from me. Elsa was still having it hard.
POV Elsa
Unbelievable, just freaking unbelievable!
I throw my bag to my bunk bed and then I collapse to sit next to it. I tried to get out from base today but I couldn't because I didn't have the necessary permission. Just now I had to call Anna that I won't be home for Thanksgiving dinner today. I missed the last bus which was supposed to take me to the location where limousine was waiting, Anna was at home and finishing baking the delicious pumpkin pie.
This is all his fault, I thought when I wipe away couple tears from my cheek. Captain Frost ruined Thanksgiving for me, just because he is heartless after all. I just thought that now he would let me go home, he has been quite nice in the training after what happened last month. When he opened up to me, so that's why I thought... why am I this foolish?
Quickly I got up and I decided to go to knock his door and demand an explanation. Maybe he just forgot to sign my permit? Maybe he can fly me to the limo? That's if he has a heart at all.
When I was at his barracks door I hesitated for a while but then I knocked it. There was no response so I knocked the door again angrily.
"What are you doing?" Someone giggled behind of me and I turn around.
I'm staring at Captain Toothiana and my cheeks flush, "Captain Toothiana!" Then I cleared my throat, "I just want to know why Captain Frost forgot to sign my permit to leave the base for Thanksgiving, ma'am."
"Forgot?" Captain Toothiana mumbled and rubbed her chin. I see how she's wearing a dress in purple and green which is odd.
"Yes, ma'am," I sigh.
"I don't think he forgot, it isn't like him and he is probably in the Mess preparing our dinner with North, Sandy and Bunny," Captain Toothiana said and smiled compassionately.
"I see," I told her blankly.
"Why won't you join us? We have plenty of food Private and you shouldn't be alone this day? Come at 5pm, then it's done," Captain Toothiana shrugged.
"But," I muttered.
"It's an order. Dress into something casual," she cheered as she turned her back at me and started walking past our barracks towards mess.
So I have four hours to get ready into most nerve wrecking Thanksgiving ever. I mean who on earth would want to spend the day with superiors?
The hours passed way too quickly and I stand in front of bathroom mirror. I have no idea of why I added some makeup on me and put on a just above knee high cotton dress with u-neckline and butterfly sleeves. The dress was aqua blue and there was a black belt made from fabric and tied into rosette over my left hip. I had a pair of aqua blue shoes to go with the dress, I bought this outfit a couple weeks ago from the town. Shawn was making sure that I got the set in aqua blue instead of red which to him was too Christmassy. This was supposed to be my Thanksgiving look at home.
The Mess building was rather quiet compared to the normal busyness when people were getting their food and eating in a hurry so they won't miss their next exercise.
I push the door open and then I go inside. The large hall was quite empty but near the kitchen there was a long table with orange table runner, beautiful centerpieces made from rich orange pumpkins and sunflowers with some cranberries. Rich, deep colors of autumn were filling the table.
Slowly I walk closer with my heart thumping inside my chest. Captain North sits on the left side of the table and opposite to him is Captain Sandman. Next to Captain North is Captain Bunnymund and next to him is warmly laughing Captain Toothiana. They all had casual clothes instead of their usual uniforms.
No one seemed to notice me by now because they all were chatting together. Just when I was about to greet them shyly the kitchen doors flung open and Captain Frost walked in.
"Here comes the turkey guys!" Captain Frost cheered and laughed while he brought the turkey to the empty spot in front of Captain Toothiana and Bunnymund. When he placed the turkey down and was about to sit he froze and started staring at me. He was wearing the blue hoodie and brown pants that I've seen before.
"What's the matter Frost?" Captain North questioned with his deep voice and soon they all began looking towards me. My cheeks were burning up when they stared at me in misbelieve.
That's when Captain Toothiana gasped, "Oh yeah! I forgot that I invited Private Arendelle in here tonight. Someone forgot to write her a permit to leave the base." Her tone was scolding and he glanced at Captain Frost quickly.
"Well come here then Private," Captain North chuckled and pointed at the table.
I wave my hand shyly as I'm unable to speak. It feels just too awkward to sit with them, especially when Captain Frost just seated down quietly and remained staring at me. The fact that only free seat was next to Captain Frost in the end of the table didn't make things easier.
"T-thank you sir but I'll take a seat in here," I laughed nervously as I was getting ready to sit on the table next to theirs which was just plain and empty compared to theirs.
"Didn't you hear what Captain North just said?" A cold tone spoke and I glance at their table. Other Captains were staring at Captain Frost who was speaking. "He told you to sit here," he ordered.
Slowly I dragged myself to their table and I sat next to Captain Frost. Captain Toothiana wanted to say the grace so we joined hands, I was so afraid to hold Captain Frost's hand right now but he didn't try to break any of my bones even though I joined to their dinner.
We began putting food on our plates.
"Can I have some peas Captain Bunnymund?" I asked politely. He nodded his head and handed the pea bowl tome.
"You know what. Call me Bunny tonight and I'll call you...umm," Bunny mumbled and looks at me questioning.
"N-name is Elsa, sir," I whispered.
"Hey! Tonight everyone will be treated without ranks! So my name is Tooth, that's North and Sandy is over there. And your Captain is Jack," Toothiana cheered.
Captain Frost groaned and started to slice the turkey. His body was leaning over me as he was cutting the meat. After cutting the turkey he began putting it on plates. I was the second last to get my piece.
"T-thank you J-J..." I started and tried to say his name. He cocked his eyebrow up and I was shaking violently while he watched at me. Then he began laughing as he put his turkey last on his plate.
"For God's sake... My name is not Jay Jay. It's Jack... Elsa," he laughed in amusement as he sat down. Everyone laughed a bit to his comment and I started turning red. He hasn't said my name in other occasions except when we've been...
"Thank you Jack," I whispered and then I felt his hand on my right knee. I look at him quickly and he smiled a bit before patting my knee couple times. Then everyone began eating.
"Why aren't you all spending the holiday with your families?" I asked while we were waiting for dessert which Jack went to get.
"Well this is our family," Bunny smiled.
"Yes and some of us might have other families but.... things might be a bit complicated," North said quietly and glanced towards the kitchen where Jack soon came with the pumpkin pie.
"Let's switch the plates!" Toothiana cheered and stood up. She began taking the messy plates out and when I was about to help her out Bunny stepped up and started helping her. I could see something between those two and I smiled secretly while watching them.
They went to kitchen to take the plates to wash and Jack began putting the dessert plates to everyone's place.
Suddenly a loud scream and some giggling came from the kitchen. North and Sandy glance at each other and rush to kitchen door. I could see a faint glimpse of Bunny holding Tooth in an embrace when North and Sandy at first opened the door a bit too much.
Then Jack put a plate in front of me. I didn't notice him being this close to me until now, I can feel his chest touching my shoulder as he leans over me. Slowly he pulled away and then I heard his breathing next to my ear, I was too afraid to look at him. Now we were nearly alone while Tooth and Bunny were in the kitchen and Sandy and North were focusing on spying at them on the door.
"Having fun Private?" Jack whispered to my ear. I nodded my head quickly.
"Good," he chuckled silently to my ear.
"W-why didn't you give me permission to go?" I questioned quietly, his left arm curled around my waist and his lips touched my right ear lope. He was crouching down next to me.
"I have my reasons," he mumbled and soon his lips were touching my neck, his fluffy white hair was tickling my cheek.
"I miss my sister," I managed to gulp out and he stopped kissing my neck.
"You'll see her on your birthday--," he said blankly as his hand caressed over my abdomen. "I said that you should've stayed away from me Elsa," he muttered as he let go of me. He sat back next to me and he started plating the dessert to everyone.
"What do you think that's going on in there?" Captain Frost whispered and nodded towards kitchen.
"Affection... I think that Tooth and Bunny love each other," I replied and I tucked my hair behind my ear.
"And what if other one dies? Leaving the other alone?" He mumbled.
"Their heart would be broken," I gulped.
"So you would do anything to protect them?" He insisted.
"Yes," I whispered.
"That's why love and war can't exist together. Love is useless, it gets you killed... it's a weakness," he sighed and collapsed down to sit.
I was about to tell him that love is powerful but he just doesn't know it like I do. Love saved me and my sister. However I didn't have time because Sandy and North rushed back to table and soon Bunny and Tooth walked back to hall.
I smile when I see how Tooth wipes away a lipstick stain from Bunny's cheek. They came back to table and sat down.
"Phew there were a lot of dishes!" Bunny exhaled.
"Pfft... your face was just so dirty that Tooth had to clean it up by licking all over your face," Jack laughed aloud.
I heard how Tooth gasped and then I nearly saw the steam which was coming out from Bunny. In short amount of time I saw how Bunny took some of the pie and threw it at Jack. In slowmotion I see how the pie slowly slides down from Jack's face.
Then it was a food war. Everyone was throwing things at each other. Even Sandy. I just tried not to get in middle of the fight.
"I guess that I'll go," I laughed nervously as I stood up.
Then I saw how a piece of pie was flying towards me. A piece that was meant to Jack by Bunny but was out of the right path.
I close my eyes and ready myself to get some of that pie to my face. However nothing hit me and when I open my eyes a bit I see how Jack had stopped it from hitting me with his hand.
"T-thanks," I whispered and he just grinned.
"STOP!" North roared. He had got the largest slice of pie to his face.
Everyone stopped and then they laughed. They wiped some of the pie away from their face and then licked their fingers clean.
"That was some good pie," Jack chuckled then he glanced at me. He took some of the smashed pieces of pie from his plate and he began approaching me.
"No," I gasped but instead of throwing it at me like I was afraid he would, he opened up my mouth and made me taste the pie.
"Mmm... good," I mumbled and gave a thumbs up.
After cleaning up the Mess hall we started walking to our barracks. I was walking with Captain Frost since our barracks were next to each other. We spoke nothing.
Then he broke the silence. "I really will give you a permit to go home at your birthday. I'm not that heartless," he said quietly.
"Thank you Captain, " I spoke quietly as I wondered how he knows about my birthday. Then he went to his own barrack and I went into mine.
