17 Heaven Above
POV Jack
The base is nearly empty today like it's on every weekend. I walk past the ghostlike place, making my way towards the shooting range. The ground is cold and crispy beneath my feet, everything is frosted on this day and I guess that the winter is coming.
"I wonder if she'll come after yesterday," I said wondering aloud. I guess I said some things I shouldn't have said.
However when I saw her with Shawn I saw an opportunity to push her away. Maybe even a way to get her off from the military because I know my brother. Shawn was always against military and deep inside me I wish that he would've succeeded with Emma, make her think of some other career. I can't blame Shawn though, I can blame myself for being a bad role model.
Walking at the shooting range felt like it only took few seconds when I was deep in my thoughts. I stand in front of it, afraid to go in and see her or even afraid of not seeing her. I don't know which I'm scared more.
I lift my feet on the first step and I see a melted pattern on it. It was done by a foot, smaller than mine figuring out from the patterns on each step. Weird sensation of relief and worry went through me as I got up the stairs.
The sight which I encountered after opening up the door I wasn't prepared for, not at all. Her eyes were cruel when she stared at me, she was distant and looking really mad. I look away from her after closing up the door behind of me. I walk near her while she's staring at me, not saying a thing or doing anything.
"You should greet your superior," I said to her. The words felt nearly bitter and sarcastic in my mouth since why would she greet someone who insulted her. Heck, I wouldn't. I would just punch the guy who did that, like I did to Bunnymund once.
Now she looks away from me, crossing her arms.
"I see. So how was your date with my brother? Are you quitting the army so that's with the period attitude?" I laughed at her shortly and I cocked my eyebrow up.
Again there was silence and it started to bug me off.
Swallowing your anger isn't easy and that's what I'm doing right now. Swallowing each and one of those hurtful, painful and poisonous words which I want to say so she would clearly get my opinion. However I only let out a deep breath of frustration and she startled because of it. She was clearly waiting for my outburst what she was used to by now.
My hand goes inside my pocket and I stare into her eyes while doing it. Then I quickly pulled out a small package that I brought with me. When I handed it over to her my hand began shaking. It wasn't easy to calm down my mind and I actually failed.
Private Arendelle was still glaring at me, at times glimpsing at the package I was handing to her.
Then I groaned, "It's for you. Fucking take it."
She flinched to my words and quickly took it from my hand. My cheeks flushed a bit when she began to examine it in her hands, glancing at me and questioning my actions with her eyes.
Her expression softened a bit when she stared at the gift wrapped chocolate bar that I gave her. Her finger brushed over the word 'Sorry'.
"I just h-happened to take that one," I mumble and quickly look away from her.
"Mmhmm," she buzzed like an angry pack of bees that were about to kill you for touching their honey.
"What is wrong now!" I shouted at her.
"You," her voice dripped venom and her eyes shot painful sparks at me, hurting me deep inside my soul.
That made me flip. I freaking tried to be nice but she isn't co-operating. I pinned her against the wall and my other hand squeezed her wrist.
"We should be shooting and not arguing Private," I hissed at her while my hold tightened around her wrist.
"Well, well. How can you touch at stained meat?" She chuckled blankly and tried to break free from me.
My cheeks warmed up and all anger washed away from me. I really called her that on my weak moment.
Now I felt irritated, not because of how she's acting but because she actually thinks that I... I...
I groan and press my forehead against hers. "That would make me filthy? Right? Only something filthy could do a stain. Do I look filthy to you? Huh?"I yelled at her.
The anger and vendetta in her eyes was evaporating slowly as she was giving up with her attitude.
"Because... you're pure," I whispered to her and I closed my eyes before slowly backing up from her.
Private Arendelle was staring at me in shock afterwards. I just swallowed the lumpy feeling and I nodded towards the door leading to shooting range. Now we were just in the hall.
"Let's go to practice some shooting. You had a really bad aim before," I muttered when I opened up the door for her.
She went in before me. "Apology accepted Captain Frost," she whispered softly once she passed me and she made me smile a bit. I went in after her and we headed towards the locked weapon safe. First we put on some special earmuffs which muffle the noise but will let you communicate with others.
Private Arendelle turned around when I began opening up the safe with code. "Listen, I really don't believe that there's a harm if you see the code," I chuckled when the door beeped and opened.
I handed her M9 handgun and took one to me. She examined it in her hands.
"I really am not fond of guns Captain," she gulped. I roll my eyes at her as I took it from her, then I loaded it with ammo and handed it back to her.
"You should. Since you have no other way of fighting with force, you should learn to protect yourself and others with guns," I told to her. I glanced at her, waiting her to reveal her abilities now but she was awfully quiet which is not like her.
Next we headed to one of the shooting booths. "So now you'll shoot some targets. Just aim and shoot," I explained when I hit the button. The targets came to sight now and I go to my own booth.
It didn't take long until I had emptied my ammo case at one target. However she didn't fire a single shot and I groan while going to her booth.
"Did you fucking chicken out Private?" I growled.
"N-no... It doesn't work Captain," she whispered shyly and then I took the gun from her.
"You had the safety on, idiot," I mumbled while being irritated.
Her angry glare nearly made me fall at that point. Then she started shooting and I backed up from her booth. What I saw was outstanding shooting. She hit the target perfectly when she was mad.
"Satisfied? Captain?" She snapped while giving the gun back to me.
"Sort of... I have a request," my words came out of my mouth insecurely. Once I do this there's no going back to the way things used to be.
"And what would that be, sir?" She mumbled bitterly.
"N-nothing," I gulped as I backed away from my idea. She was way too reluctant right now. "However we should try your sniping skills next week but before we quit today I want to see if you can hit on a moving target," I smirked and she looked at me like I was plotting something evil for her.
I called her to follow me back outside. The sniper rifle is hanging over my shoulder while we go towards the shooting range that's located further away from the base on the outside. It's better for long distance shots.
Once we were standing on the aiming spot I took her earmuffs off and mine too before handing her the sniping rifle.
"Your mission is shoot down a moving target before it manages to reach you. Clear your mind and focus, these are the keys and don't forget to turn the safety off," I smiled and then turned my back at her.
"What's the target, sir?" She requested.
"Me. And I'm fast moving target coming straight from your front," I laughed my response.
She didn't have a chance to say the opposite when I already ran to other side of the range. I let her get down to lay on the ground and do the settings correctly on the sniper rifle before I would barge towards her. No, she won't get it easy because I'm going to dodge the bullets that she'll shoot.
"Let's begin," I grinned while yelling at her.
Then I ran with the speed of wind, dodging her bullets.
"STOP RUNNING!" She screamed and sounded pissed.
"Try to stop me!" I yelled back.
"NO!" She shouted and that's when I realized that she was disobeying me and ruining the exercise.
While running I lifted my hand in front of me and then I blew cold air into it. A glowing snowball appeared and I threw it at her, she wasn't expecting it. She shot her next bullet right before the snowball hit on her face.
Suddenly I felt striking pain in my chest, a force that was enough to throw me back. I fell, not being able to breathe and each breath felt painful right until I didn't get any air. My view was getting black, sounds disappearing while I laid on ground. I miscalculated, I was already too close to her.
Some distant voices, whimpers were slowly reaching towards me. Something was ripping my shirt and then I began gasping.
"Captain!" Private Arendelle cried while I was taking in the fresh air inside my lungs.
"You are an idiot," she managed to mumble out between her sobbing.
My chest ached when she pulled me to sit. Still I was out of breath, now just focusing on breathing.
"Say something?" She begged and I look into her eyes.
My hand goes to my chest where the bullet hit. The bullet made the bulletproof vest bend and crush my upper body and she had figured it out, opening it up and helped me to breathe again.
I began laughing and Private Arendelle startled. The frosted tree leafs were slowly melting under us.
Her eyes were swollen from crying and I reach my hand to wipe away her tears. It's like my heart got new strength all of a sudden, now it's beating rocket speed when I look at her. Her hand went over mine as I cupped her cheek.
"I thought I killed you sir," she said silently and her voice cracked.
"Thankfully you didn't aim to my head," I chuckled and flash a grin at her. She flushed for some reason.
"I thought of it for a second," she mumbled and her eyes widened from the realization that she could've actually killed me.
"It's my fault kiddo, for not focusing--," I laughed while lifting her chin up with my front finger. Our eyes met and I got slightly embarrassed of the way she was looking at me, "—besides I can't die and rest in peace before I get my revenge." I sighed.
"Revenge? What revenge?" She repeated.
"Uhh... I really don't want to speak about it," I replied quickly while letting go of her face.
"I ran away and when my sister came to get me I hurt her so badly that she almost died. There, now you need to tell me something," she insisted and grabbed to my arm when I had gotten up.
I shook her off from me and I glare at her. Her eyes were determined and I knew she wasn't going to give up.
Quickly I rub my neck and weigh the odds. Should I tell her something?
"Well," I finally exhaled and I could see the wait in her.
"My sister died because of me. She got hurt really badly because of me, she was ruined to the point of no coming back. I'm never getting her back. I lost myself too that day," I muttered.
"I'm here to listen. You can tell me everything," she whispered when she took my hand in hers. My feelings were all mixed up right now. Somehow I wanted to tell her everything but I know I can't. She would hate me.
"You don't understand." I said quietly and I shook my head, avoiding eye contact.
"Try me."
"No and I don't know how to explain," I glance at her and give her a faint smile.
"Sing? T-that's how I deal with things if I'm struggling," she gulped.
Sing?
"You sing Private?" I questioned as I raised my eyebrow.
"Yes and you do too. I saw you doing that in the Den when you tried to... s-shoot yourself and then at Emma's grave--," she spoke quickly and she had clearly made up her mind to make me to speak with her.
"So you saw me at her grave. That's why you knew about her," I said as I snapped my tongue. My words were bitter from the fact that she had been spying on me.
"Yes. Stop pushing people away Captain!"
I roll my eyes and I took couple steps away from her. The confidence was disappearing from her face when she saw me backing up from her.
"C-captain don't!" She yelled to me and her arms wrapped around her body, she embraced herself. "C-captain. L-listen...," she shouted and her face was turning red. "I LOV--," she began.
"DON'T FUCKING SAY THINGS YOU DON'T MEAN!" I groaned and I muffled her words by making a whirl of snowstorm circle around her for a moment.
I used that moment to create something from ice. When the whirl stopped around her she saw the shimmering ice piano which I had done. This kind of piano has the most clear and beautiful sound of them all, it never gets off from tone.
"Come," I encouraged her. I could see the fear in her eyes, how she wiped away a frozen tear from her cheek.
I sat in front of the piano and she walked next to me.
"You see, Private... You should be scared around me, in fact... you shouldn't be with me," I said coldly and then I spread my legs a bit and I patted my lap.
"Sit," I ordered and then I pulled the reluctant girl she is to my lap. Her scent was lingering into my nose when I reached myself to watch over her shoulder. My arms reached to piano keys from behind her.
"W-why," she whispered insecurely.
"I'm telling you why," I spoke softly to her ear when I began to play. I close my eyes and I feel the pain striking to my chest again, not from bullet this time but it comes deep from inside of me. Straight from my heart.
Then I began singing while she was sitting on my lap. Listening.
"When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold
When your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail
Are the worst of all
And the blood's run stale
I wanna hide the truth
I wanna shelter you
But with the beast inside
There's nowhere we can hide
No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too close
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
At the curtain's call
It's the last of all
When the lights fade out
All the sinners crawl
So they dug your grave
And the masquerade
Will come calling out
At the mess you made
Don't wanna let you down
But I am hell bound
Though this is all for you
Don't wanna hide the truth
No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too close
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
They say it's what you make
I say it's up to fate
It's woven in my soul
I need to let you go
Your eyes, they shine so bright
I wanna save that light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how
When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too close
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide."
When my singing ended we remained sitting on the same seat. Suddenly she stood up and turned around, sitting back to my lap in a way that our chests were against each other. Now she could see the tears that I shed during the song. I couldn't say a word, she was too quick and I couldn't recover in time to show her how cold my heart had came. Now she sees how weak I am.
My cheeks flushed and I turn to look away from her. I'm acting like a shy teenaged boy around their crush, so pathetic.
Suddenly she began humming the same melody which the song had and she closed her eyes. And when she opened them, she smiled at me.
Her singing was like angels light, reaching to my damaged soul and making me cry purifying tears. Right over the dark wounds which were covering my barely beating heart.
"When I look at you,
your eyes that shine so bright.
I see the man in you
I wanna save that light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how"
Her arms wrapped around me and she buried her face against my shoulder. I was still stunned of her voice.
"I'm a demon, there's no light left in me," I spoke my words with certainty and quietness.
"Then I would be a monster," she replied and tightened her grip and then she lifted her face up and her eyes were examining my face.
A smile crept on my face and I place my hands on her back. "You may be a bad Private but not a monster," I laughed out blankly.
"Well you are not a demon. You just need to open up again," she smiled back at me and I glance away. The piano which I made from ice disappeared as well as the seat when we stood up.
"I can't," I gulped.
"What are you afraid of?" She insisted to know. Our embrace was broken but yet she placed her hand on my shoulder and held it tightly.
"Weaknesses," I told her while I clench my hands.
"Like what?" She spoke while taking a step closer. Our bodies were now again against each other.
You.
"Nothing," I smirk nervously as I ruffle my hair. She took my hand down and now her hand went into my hair. Her fingers brushed gently through my hair.
That's when I grabbed her from her waist. I just grinned as she screamed when we shot towards the sky. She tangled her arms around me and her face was against my shoulder. She screamed and screamed while I made us fly.
Then I paused, leaving us floating above the clouds.
"I guess I figured out your fear, Private Arendelle. How about if I drop you down?" I teased her and I let go.
The way she threw her legs around my hip made me gasp. She was clinging onto me dearly.
"NO! Don't let go!" She screamed, begging me to stop playing around.
I sigh and wrap her into embrace.
"You should really open your eyes, Private," I encouraged her while her body was quivering so much that you could whip some cream with that power.
For my surprise she actually opened up her eyes. First she was nervous but then her eyes opened up wide and she was gasping from amazement. We floated above the clouds that were like cotton candy and having different shades of pink and blue. The sun was shining in the horizon.
"So beautiful," she whispered and eased her grip on me.
"Yeah and peaceful. When everything seems to be collapsing around me... I come here and relax, clear my mind," I said silently as to honor the place which was my sanctuary. A place where I could just forget the world and pretend that I would be part of heaven where my sister is.
"I know... sometimes you just want to be alone, that's how I felt when--," she begun but suddenly silenced.
"Hmm?" I glance at her.
"Nothing," she replied and her hands were crumbling my jacket's fabric.
"Okay," I said while widening the words while saying them. "I was wondering--," I begun.
"Yes?"
"Wondering where my other jacket is. I have two and the other is missing, now the one I had has a hole in it because of you shooting at me," I grinned and she suddenly blushed.
"I don't know sir," she mumbled.
As I guessed. She probably took it before.
"That's a shame. Well, better get back down and then you will run ten miles," I said strictly.
"WHAT!" She gasped but I was already speeding towards the ground level again.
