PILOT/PROLOGUE (S1, VOL1, EP0)
[Unknown's POV/EVENING/THE SAME DAY]:
"Is there a reason to continue?"
Standing on a bridge in the peaceful evening, water running below and creating soothing waves occasionally, a young girl takes a deep breath, inhales, and exhales, lost in melancholic thoughts.
People walk around not paying attention to the person with long black hair with bangs and brown eyes.
She puts her arms on the edge of the bridge, leaning on the palms of her hands, as the water is running peacefully.
What's left to do here for me? People hate me and I don't have anyone in particular. Besides, the principal of my school expelled me.
By the corner of her eye, she sees three seemingly familiar girls, who are laughing.
She quickly pulled a hood over her head, probably so the upcoming pedestrians wouldn't notice her.
Besides wanting to or not, she would have eavesdropped and there was no reason for her to leave early.
"What, you're moving? When?"
"Yes, Mom told me two weeks ago. I wasn't sure how to tell you, because it's far from here."
"Aw, we're going to miss you. Do you truly have to go?"
"It's decided." the girl said gloomily.
The other girl on the bridge gasped slightly, realizing who these three girls were, however, luckily they didn't hear the sound and walked past her without noticing.
She took a peek at them once again, as if she came to another realization.
"Move far away..." she spoke, her voice barely above a whisper, "that's what I have to do!"
The second sentence was louder and so some pedestrians gazed at her, and she immediately realized her mistake. It's better not to attract attention.
A bird landed in the water, as she pulled the hood down and gazed up at the sky. "I hope you're still there watching over me."
She turned away from the bridge, determined. "It's time to start anew and change everything, somewhere far, far away."
...
[Unknown's POV/DAY]:
A boy with dark brown messy hair and bangs covering his almost whole forehead walks through the school hall, and whispers can be heard.
He turns his head in both directions, right and left, frowning slightly, and thinks: Why is everyone looking at me?
He then slowed down his pace slightly as if a realization arrived in his mind. Did she tell someone what happened between us? No, not like they care anyway.
On halfway to the classroom he raised his eyebrow as he saw a medium tall girl walking towards him quickly and seemingly angrily. She didn't stop until she stood in front of him, looking him dead in the eye.
"How could you?!"
The boy seemed to be surprised by this as he opened his eyes a little more. "What are you talking about?"
"My friend! Don't you pretend you don't know!" her voice became a little high pitched and tears formed in her eyes. She was the kind of girl who would tear up when angry.
"Oh, she told you?" his face darkened slightly, "it was for the best."
"What?" she seemed stunned, "how can you say that?"
"It's not your business. What needs to be done is done."
"I can't believe you. You're exactly as she described! Horrible!"
"Horrible?" He looked shocked. "She said I was horrible?"
The girl wiped away her tears, viewing him angrily. "You know what you've done. I hope you get expelled soon."
She pushed him slightly and then left him there feeling confused and slightly frustrated. Just what is going on today?
Others didn't come to his defense, it was as if they didn't care at all. People either looked at him coldly, whispered, stared, or gazed away. The minority didn't do anything, however, most of them seemed to think he was a weirdo.
The boy entered his class frowning and wondering about the situation, something didn't feel right. He sat on his seat followed by multiple glances.
Sure, he is almost late, but people usually don't pay this much attention to him, and this makes him feel uneasy.
In the middle of the math class, someone knocked on the door and opened it. The person appeared to be the deputy headmaster. "Is Nakajima Pablo here? The principal would like to see him."
The boy, seemingly Nakajima Pablo, became slightly pale as not only did this speak of trouble, but it also made him feel like he was in the center of the spotlight.
He put his pen down as he was in the middle of writing and embraced his fate.
"Yes, I'm here," he said trying to keep his voice steady, as everyone's eyes locked into him. The deputy headmaster, a young woman with short black hair, looked at him as well. "Pack your things. It might take a while."
He gulped, putting his pencil case and books into his bag, the bad feeling in his stomach increasing. By the corner of his eyes, he could tell people are staring and some are whispering. It was still unclear what he did, that was so bad.
Pablo followed the petite woman downstairs in silence. It's strange how the principal never comes, instead always sends someone to send us there, he thought.
...
[Unknown's POV/EVENING/SAME DAY]:
The girl walks the street viewing the stunning river on which the sun reflects, seemingly lost in thoughts, and not noticing some people staring at her.
It was quite common to get stares, especially with what has happened. She wasn't sure how to cope with it, however, knew where to find help.
She once again pulled a hood over her head, looking in both directions while crossing the road. Perhaps she should've chosen a different disguise.
The pleasing sun rays heat up her black hood's fabric, as she suddenly changes her pace, making it quicker than before, as if she didn't want to be seen.
In the background, she could already see a tall building which made her gulp, it wasn't a place where she enjoyed going too much, however, it certainly helped to visit it. The name soon appeared: "Satori Mental Health Institute."
She stopped in front of the gates, gulping slightly again and it was visible her hands began shaking. She took a deep breath, inhaling, exhaling, and closing her eyes.
"I'm not sure if I'm ready yet." her voice barely above a whisper. "I need to do this. I need to move on. I must go here to end and start again!"
It was as if she embraced her fear with every step she took, slowly moving closer and closer to the building's main door. She eventually took a last deep breath and pressed the doorbell.
...
[Unknown's POV/DAY/SAME DAY]:
"We have heard some bad rumors about you. Someone reported an unpleasant situation." The principal leaned towards the boy, with intertwined fingers and arms leaning on his desk.
Pablo only stared at him in silence not knowing what to say and awaiting his judgment.
"Do you have any idea why you're here?"
"Uh, no," he said in visible confusion.
"Sakai Yua with Takao Naomi reported you have done something bad to Sakai. We are not sure what happened, however, these things have spread like wildfire."
"I still don't know what I did." Pablo frowned slightly, "I am puzzled, can you tell me what happened?"
The principal sighed and said these things aren't easy to say out loud, then asked him what happened between Yua and him.
"We broke up," he answered hesitantly and the principal nodded.
"Yes, she said so."
"And why should that be a problem? Why am I here for that?"
"That isn't the exact reason why you're here."
"Then can you tell me why am I here?"
The principal looked at him in silence, before giving him the true answer. "You've been accused."
His following words clearly shocked the young boy, whose face became pale and he sat in silence for almost a whole minute. The principal's words suddenly stopped making sense, it was as if everything became muffled.
The last sentence he could understand was: "We need to investigate the situation, however, the school must take action. We are sorry, but for now, you're suspended. If we find out this is what truly happened, you're going to be expelled."
...
[Unknown's POV/EVENING/SAME DAY]:
The girl walked through halls with white walls gulping and shakily looking at both sides, hearing indistinct voices in the background. It was known that a psychiatric hospital was like a mental prison.
Luckily though, it had a few buildings which involved different treatments and hers was on the upper floor.
She walked up modern brown wooden-looking stairs with blue carpet on them, which made the room itself look more pleasing than it actually was.
She walked out to a middle floor with a few doors and stopped in front of a door that said "Dr. Kiyama".
The girl hesitated before knocking, however, built up enough courage to do what needed to be done.
A foreign woman with blonde hair and green eyes opened the door, immediately looking down at the visitor, as she was taller than the girl.
"Oh, it's you, Sakura. Do we have an appointment?"
"No, well, we have next week but... I decided I'm moving."
The therapist blinked in surprise, "moving?"
"Yes, I wanted to say goodbye. I've already made my decision."
"That seems like a rather impulsive decision. Come in." She held the door so the petite girl could walk in.
Sakura sat in a comfortable seat in front of a table, while Dr. Kiyama sat on the opposite side. Although she clearly wasn't an Asian, she probably got married to one, hence the name.
"May I offer you some water?" the therapist gestured toward a machine that offered cold and hot water.
"No, thank you." the client pulled off her hood, determined. "I thought a new beginning from everything could help me truly move on. I'll have to leave everything behind. I'm sorry."
The woman nodded, writing some notes in her purple notebook. "So I assume you're here to cancel all our future meetings?"
"Yes, I might need to move far away. I'm very sorry. You did help me." she spoke and it was clear everything she said were honest words.
"Are you sure? Did you think it through?"
"Only today," Sakura said hesitantly.
She anxiously watched her therapist write more notes. "You will let me go, right?"
"I can't stand in your way if that's what you feel like you need to do. However, you do know you will need to find someone else, right?"
"I wanted to stop therapy in general." The girl answered. "No more pills, live like a normal human again."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, yes, I think so."
"It was nice knowing you and seeing how far you've come. I wish you the best in the future. Where are you moving to?"
"I don't know yet."
"Depending on the destination I can recommend you other therapists if things ever become worse."
"I can write you an email later if that's okay."
"Alright. I'll have to disconnect you from the database as well. It was nice knowing you, Sakura Kurumi."
"You too, Dr. Kiyama."
They both stood up and bowed to each other, watching each other in silence, before the therapist gestured with her hand.
Sakura gave the woman a faint smile and slowly walked out of the room. Once she closed the door, her smile disappeared as she watched the walls. My heart tells me my choice is right.
She gazed at the door again, feeling a mixture of relief and sadness, knowing that she won't see this woman again. She did help her realize some things.
New beginnings aren't easy, she thought as well as she walked downstairs, quickly making her way out of the hospital.
...
[Unknown's POV/NIGHT/SAME DAY]:
"It's strange you decided to meet in a forest." a womanly voice smirked, dripping with sarcasm.
"It's funny how you fell right into my trap." the man's voice suddenly changed, however, he didn't know she had already planned that.
"Oh, did I? And what's your trap?"
"You met me in the forest at night. There's no one here. We are free to do whatever we want."
"And what is it that we want?"
"We are going to do exactly what I want to do."
"Get to the point." she groaned.
He pushed her into a tree. Originally they had met in a safe place, but when he decided to give her a ride, he went somewhere completely different than he said he would.
"Your attitude will change soon." he said in a threatening voice, "because you will do exactly as I want."
"Foolish human." she said mockingly, "did you really think you had me in your trap?"
The man tied her hands up to a tree and began unzipping his pants.
"You are in my trap."
"No," she said in a voice dripping with sweetness. "I am not your victim. You're mine." With ease and incredible force, she broke the rope on her hands, pulling a metal rod out of her cape and extending it.
The strange part of it was that the metal rod glow in blue, as the woman pulled it furthermore it revealed a scythe blade.
She stood in front of him, the blue glowing scythe illuminating the man as his pants dropped.
"You humans are so foolish." she pushed him, and he stumbled upon his pants and fell on his butt. She swung the scythe and it grazed his throat, not enough to slice it open, but enough to make him bleed.
He gasped in shock, viewing the woman in fear. "No!"
"You don't like it when you aren't in control, huh? Killing you would be too easy."
She lowered her head and kneeled to look him dead in the eye, without lowering her scythe one bit. "You deserve to feel what you did to your victims."
The man's expression was priceless. "I'll screw you up like you screwed up the others!"
The man tried to get up and run, but she stomped her boots on his feet with full force. Needless to say, she was a plus-sized woman who had a lot of strength, and such a stomp was incredibly painful.
"NO! NO! NO!" The man cried as she laughed maniacally, and grabbed a blue glowing rope from her coat, which automatically locked into his hands and tied them up together.
The man gazed up at her in horror in the darkness, in a forest where no one would look for them. His plan was turned against him and he knew exactly what would happen.
...
[Unknown's POV/DAY/THE SAME DAY]:
Pablo couldn't help it and continued staring at the principal. Is he being serious?
"There's no proof..."
"That's the problem, and as a school we must take action, or things will become even more unpleasant. We hope you understand. Have a nice day."
"Do you believe me?" he stood up, clearly upset.
The headmaster's eyes locked into him in silence. "I am not sure whether my opinion matters."
"It does, to me."
"I don't know. You should go now."
Pablo took his belongings, sending the man one last glance, and then walked out, carefully closing the door. Is he serious? Is this truly happening?
He stared at the walls outside of the door before shaking his head slightly. This must be a dream, there's no way at all. This is just absurd!
And yet he was asked to pack his things and leave because of some severe rumors with no proof.
It makes sense they don't want to anger anyone, but seriously? How do they even want to confirm this? And she wouldn't do that? Would she? What if I truly don't know her at all?
[Pablo's POV]:
I grabbed my phone out of my pocket in one sharp movement, going on social media and checking our conversation. It turned out she blocked me.
I sighed heavily, switching to another app only to find out she blocked me there as well. I switched accounts and searched for her profile. When the chat opened I had no idea what to say, my mind was blank. Why? What did I do? Did you do it? Did you really say it? What for?
I ended up shoving the device back into my pocket in frustration and angrily walking out of the school. Unbelievable!
As soon as I got out of this hellhole my frustration became bigger and bigger, I felt the anger boiling up in my veins and angrily took the phone out again. I wasn't sure if there was anything stopping me because I was just so angry!
I opened the chat and started writing a very long and angry message. I stopped realizing what I wrote halfway, but the start of it sounded something like this:
"Why? How could you? No, how DARE YOU? What did I ever do to YOU? I've done nothing but treated you with kindness! And in the end, you appreciated nothing I've ever done for you! And you have the AUDACITY to speak such a way about me? Are you serious? Is this really who you are? I guess you're not who I thought you are, then. I had a GOOD REASON. We were something and YOU RUINED IT! And what for? Do you believe it makes you look cool? Do you enjoy playing the victim constantly instead of taking the blame? I don't know what you're trying to achieve here. We could've parted ways in peace if you didn't make such a big drama of every little thing I do!"
[Unknown's POV/NIGHT/SAME DAY]:
The silhouette barely visible in the dim light held its scythe, all splattered with blood gazing at the victim with her head lowered, standing. The smell of blood on the rough terrain was strong and it even soaked the seemingly feminine person, who raised her feet slightly, viewing her boot. "Ugh. Perhaps I got too carried away.
The trees' leaves rustled with the sudden wind, and the night seemed peaceful, no birds chirped and no movement was around.
A sinister smile appeared on her face as she placed her finger on the scythe, slowly wiping away the blood, and opened a book. The object was always hidden underneath her cape.
She flipped the pages until the man's photo with information underneath appeared and placed her finger on his photo.
The paper pages rustled as she slowly crossed the photo with the man's fresh blood. "A new victim in my collection. Ah, hunting humans will never bore me. Poor creatures believe they're in control. They need to be proven wrong."
She made a few steps towards the body lying on the ground in a puddle of blood. The view was horrible, however, the moonlight was dim, making the scenery barely visible.
"Your last words were: You are a monster." How ironic is it, for a monster to be hunted down by another beast? Rest in peace. No," the evil smile braced her face again as she contemplated what to write, holding a pen and soaking it up in his blood. "Rest in hell."
The sentence was now written under his photo in big capitals.
She suddenly heard some leaves rustling and quickly turned around. "Who's there?!"
Small footsteps rustled through the leaves causing her to question if it was only an animal or something bigger.
"I don't care what you are, I'll kill you." she pulled her scythe up, holding a battle stance.
A silhouette came to her, wearing a fedora that covered their face completely, their cape rustled as they moved and their boots made silent although not unbearable steps.
The murderer acted quickly, running forward and swinging their scythe, however, instead of cutting the person, it went through them as if they were a ghost.
The woman gasped slightly, pulling the weapon back and raising one of her eyebrows. "What are you?"
[Unknown's POV/EVENING/SAME DAY]:
The girl began packaging things in multiple boxes, including a cat-shaped lamp, pieces of disassembled furniture, and some books. She picked another book from the shelf, however, dropped it on the ground.
"Oh no! Huh?" She noticed a photo fell from it, assumingly it was forgotten between the pages.
Kurumi picked it up and it revealed two girls smiling in the camera, one with white hair and blue eyes, seemingly an albino, and the other one with dark brown hair and green eyes.
From the background, it seemed like they were sitting in a cafeteria inside a shopping mall. The girl stared at it for almost a whole minute, looking speechless.
She suddenly threw the photo away and it landed in one of her boxes as she gasped.
"No. No! I must forget." She closed her eyes as tightly as she could and took a deep breath before stepping in front of a mirror. She looked inside it and slowly raised her hands to reach the top of her head.
It turned out her hair was a wig as she slowly lowered her arms with it, watching her own reflection in the mirror.
She then put it on a vanity table, opening her eyes fully and taking out contact lenses. Suddenly the girl grabbed a bunch of tissues, soaked them in a special liquid, and wiped her face with it.
She then exhaled profoundly and raised her head to look in the glass.
"This is the real me," she said, her eyes locking into her own reflection. "And this is who I'll be."
