Chapter 9
That son of a motherfucking bitch.
Dean risked everything to reach out to him. He broke into an occupied house in the middle of a fairly wealthy neighborhood to drop that phone number. Hell, even buying a burner phone with his face plastered all over the news was a hell of a risk. And Castiel had the audacity to tell him that they'd never even been friends?
He doesn't know if he believes it. He really doesn't. Cas visited him 20 times in three years. He asked so many questions. He listened intently to everything he said. Hell, Cas even talked about himself. No one would go through all that effort just because he was "fascinating."
But Cas sure as hell doesn't want to talk to him now. He made that abundantly clear. Sure, he backed that truck up when he found out that Dean was going to keep the phone, but that was obviously a trick, both on Castiel's part and Dean's -- though Castiel won't know Dean was fucking with him for another few minutes at the least.
As soon as Dean got that call, he started towards the nearest store he could find. He walked as he talked, trying to get the GPS coordinates to show that he was leaving. He ended up sitting outside the grocery store for a minute or two, but moments after he hung up, he slipped the phone in a shopping bag that was just moments away from being put in a trunk.
And then he was off, like nothing ever happened.
So maybe this part wasn't much of a risk. He had a plan — get the feds to track down a phone that he didn't even have through a car he'd never even touched — but come on. This was a hell of a lot of work for little to no payout.
And, okay, maybe bringing up Castiel's sister right before he hung up was a little rude. He kind of sees where the guy is coming from, after all. But it just pissed him off so much that he couldn't help it. Cas is such a little traitor. They were supposed to be friends. That was the only solace he had, and now it's gone.
But, then again, if he really was trying to track Dean down, maybe he had to say that. Maybe he just couldn't admit that he actually did enjoy Dean's company because other people were listening. Even if they weren't as they were talking like Castiel claimed, the conversation was doubtlessly going to be recorded and transcribed and studied. He would probably get in trouble if he said anything friendly towards him.
So that's the explanation Dean decides to go with. And hey, maybe he can reach out again soon, try to get him alone. He's not sure how he would do it, exactly -- the FBI probably doesn't have a PO box, and sneaking into houses is a lot harder when he doesn't kill the residents -- but he can figure it out. He has all the time in the world to do it. After all, he has no plans to turn himself in, so the fun is just getting started.
And now for his next stop: Palo Alto, to visit an old friend.
