Chapter 15

Dean reads about it in the morning paper.

"The Bloody Valentine Killer strikes again."

It's been months since he escaped prison, and he hasn't hurt anyone. Other than threatening some dweeb in California to make him a fake identity, he's been living fairly crime-free. That had been his plan all along -- fade into obscurity, and eventually drop so far off the radar that he can start living a normal life. He can't do that if someone is out there killing people in his name.

He reads the article carefully. The murder took place all the way in Wisconsin. Dean has been in Texas for months. That alone would clear his name if anyone actually knew where he was. Plus, the article doesn't mention anything about a note. They never do mention the notes, but it seems glaringly obvious right now. If Dean was going to kill someone, he would have left a note, or at least a phone number. Though not as concrete as his alibi, anyone who really knows the case would see that that is a dead giveaway, too. He had nothing to do with this. How does Cas not see that?

This really sucks. He had a nice thing going here. He really did. He was rotating bars near his homeless shelter, hustling pool and leaving the money in his bank account. Unfortunately, with the imposter making headlines, he has to duck out before anyone recognizes him, which means he's out of Texas for a while. It's a shame -- he really liked that Lee guy from Swayze's.

The first thing Dean does reading the paper is head to the nearest bank, where he withdraws all the money in his account. It's a lot to carry on his person, but he doesn't have much choice. He's leaving this identity behind. He can't go checking into his bank account when he's done here.

The next thing Dean does, not until long after the sun sets, is break into a house. He's quiet -- that's something he's always been good at -- and if anyone's home, they don't notice him. He doesn't take the time to write any type of message. He's not here for a social call, and Cas made it very obvious that he's not, either. He just wants to clear his name. So, this time, when he leaves a phone number on the wall, he doesn't even ask for Cas. It wouldn't be worth the hassle to get him on the phone for this. In all honesty, he doesn't care who gives him a call as long as it clears his name.
