Support Horikoshi

So, for those who don't know. Kohei Horikoshi is the creator of My Hero Academia, and lately I've been seeing a lot of undeserved hate towards the guy.

I'm going to show why the hate is undeserved and why I love Horikoshi and his work.

Now around the time that season 1 of the anime was out, I noticed how incredibly popular it was. This immediately caught my interest, along with the fact that it's greatly inspired by western superhero comics, like Spider-Man. And when I started the first episode, I was blown away by how good it was, the artstyle was unique that I fell in love with it, and the characters designs made everyone look and feel so distinctive, that you could easily tell who's who in a crowd.

The powers were also incredibly unique. Sure a bunch of them are pretty flashy, like Bakugo's explosions. Then you get non-flashy but really useful ones, like Uraraka's zero gravity. And of course the interesting mutant-like quirks, like Iida's engine leg. It really shows that each Quirk is different from everyone else's and no two are the same.

I also love that Horikoshi incorporates the different generations of comic books into his work, like the golden and silver ages. The silver age was time of both sidekicks, like Robin and jokey villians like the Mad Hatter. The characters that really show off this age well, are Gentle Criminal and his partner in crime La Brava. Gentle isn't really much of a malevolent villain, he's pretty clumsy and does very minor crimes like robbing stores, just like the Mad Hatter who only really steals hats.

I also love that not only is Horikoshi a fan of superheroes, he's also a fan of almost all things nerdy, like Star Wars to a point where he even drew a poster for Force Awakens and has snuck  in a few little references to the series in his work, and even based some of his characters off the Star Wars cast, for example Gran Torino is heavily inspired by Yoda, when the two are first introduced in their respective series, they're shown as jokey old men, but in reality they're incredibly strong and serve as a mentor to the protagonist.

Now the big problem that people have with Horikoshi is the designs of his characters, specifically the females.

This is the one thing about this that really frustrates me, is that people are treating fictional characters as if they were real. It feels like people these days are having trouble with separating themselves from fiction and into reality.

If you are talking about how the girls are drawn in My Hero Academia, you have to keep in mind that this is Shonen. What is the demographic for Shonen? It isn't meant for people who are in their University age or above. It's usually meant for people who are in their teens. So to them, 15 or 16 year old girls in bikini isn't really that much of a "worst offender" because they too are within that age range.

Like people complain that characters such as Uraraka and Tsuyu, wear bodysuits as hero outfits and have a problem with it, but have they forgotten that majority of female superheroes wear bodysuits/leotards? And heck, even Male superheroes wear them, like Spider-Man for example. And all of All Might's outfits are bodysuits, but no one seems to complain.

So, in conclusion, Horikoshi is free to do whatever the hell he wants to his characters. HIS characters. Not yours.

And that's really all I've gotta say on this. It doesn't matter if you're a My Hero Academia fan or not, and I'm not gonna force anyone to watch it. But please, give Horikoshi the support he needs and deserves.
