Chapter 3: The Museum
When the boys entered their dorm room, they looked around briefly to see that it was nothing like what they were used to, in fact, the aesthetic was the exact opposite of what any of them liked. There were three beds, each had a nightstand and dressers for them to put their stuff in. There was also a TV and a few chairs, which Rage and Misery checked out while Jay, Carlos, and Demitri unpacked and claimed their beds. After that, they spend the next few hours hanging out, waiting to see what they would do next, or if the girls would show up. Carlos and the imps had discovered a video game system and were playing with that, Jay was looking around for anything he saw worth taking, and Demitri was sitting on his bed, thinking to himself. If magic worked in Auradon, did that mean he had some? He had never dried since any magic he would have had wouldn't have worked on the Isle. Only one way to find out.
He closed his eyes and tried to focus. He tried to call forth any magic that was waiting to be unlocked, but nothing seemed to happen at first. Surely, he didn't actually need to have the Ember with him to unlock his power, did he? That would be really lame if that was the case. There had to be something he could do on his own. He just had to find it. He just had to-
"Boss, you okay?" It was Rage.
"Yeah, I'm fine." Demitri responds, opening his eyes to see the worried imp. "Why?"
"Your hair." Rage says, pointing at him. "It's on fire, sir."
"Yeah, it kinda just..." Jay added, trying to mimic flames on his head as best as he could.
Carefully, Demitri got up and made his way over to the closest mirror to see. Sure enough, blue flames danced on his jet black hair, making his highlights appear brighter as well. His eyes also seemed to be a brighter blue as well. He slowly reached up to touch them, and they simply maneuvered around his fingers, almost like steam. The fire didn't burn either, but simply felt warm. Lowering his hand, he focused again, and the flames went out, returning to normal.
"Cool." Was all he said in response initially. "I'll have to see what else I can do while we're here sometime. Actually, wait. Rage. Misery."
"Yes?" They responded.
"I need you two to try something for me." Demitri tells them.
"And that is?" Misery asked.
"Try and shapeshift."
"Shapeshifting? Us?" Misery asked again, "We can't."
"Yeah, we can't do that." Rage added.
"And I couldn't do what I just did before. Just do it." Demitri adds.
"Well, what should we turn into?" Rage asked
"How about dogs?" Jay asked, which sent Carlos into a panic.
"No dogs." Demitri says, pausing for a brief moment. "But cats could be a start."
"Okay. Cats." The imps respond, doing what they thought they needed to do to focus their shapeshifting. After a few sparks of magic, the two partially shapeshifted into various creatures, before finally becoming two regular house cats.
"Hey, we did it!" Rage says happily.
"We did it!" Misery adds with just as much excitement.
"Needs some more practice, but not bad." Demitri tells them, "You can change back now."
The imps return to normal and go back to playing the video game with Carlos. After a few more hours, it was night, and there was a knock on the door. Demitri went to answer it, finding Mal and Evie, who let themselves in. Evie looked around in amazement, while Mal approached Jay, who was throwing more stuff he found on his bed.
"Jay, what are you doing?" Mal asked.
"It's called stealing." Jay responds.
"Okay, what's the point?" Mal asks.
"Well, Mal, it's like buying whatever I want, except it's free." Jay explains.
"Okay, so you can do that, or you could leave all of this here and pick it up when we take over the world." Mal tells him.
"You sound just like your mom." Evie chies in, and Mal smiles at the comment
"You do your way, and I'll do mine." Jay tells her before taking his turn on the video game after Carlos.
"Guys! Do I have to remind you what we're all here for?" Mal asks the boys.
"Fairy Godmother, something something, magic wand, don't care." Demitri responds, which earned a laugh from Evie and the imps.
"This is our one chance to prove ourselves to our parents." Mal says, which draws everyone's attention, Jay pausing the game. "To prove that we are evil and vicious and ruthless and cruel. Yeah?" The others murmured their responses of agreement before Mal asked Evie for her magic mirror, and the others gathered around them.
"Mirror, mirror on the... in my hand. Where is Fairy Godmother's wand stand?" Evie asks the mirror, which shows her an image of the wand.
"There it is!" Mal says.
"Zoom out." Carlos adds.
"Magic Mirror, not so close." Evie instructs, and it shows her an image of the Earth instead. Obviously too far. She then tells it to zoom in a few more times before showing a building, or at least the sign of one. The Museum of Cultural History.
"It's in a museum?" Misery asks in curiosity.
"Do we know where that is?" Evie asks as well.
Carlos types a few things on his laptop, pulling up a map to the museum.
"2.3 miles from here." He responds, showing them the map.
"Perfect. Let's go there." Demitri says, while Mal goes to make sure no one's outside in the halls.
"Are we coming, too?" Rage asks.
"No, you two stay here for now. Practice your shapeshifting or something. I'll come back for you if we need you." Demitri tells them
"Whatever you say, Boss." Rage responds as the five kids sneak out of the room and make their way to the museum.
When the group arrived at the building, Mal had Evie pull up a map of the interior so they could find a path to where the wand was on display. They looked inside the window of the closest door and found a single guard watching the monitors, and behind him was Maleficent's spinning wheel.
"That's your mother's spinning wheel?" Jay asks, laughing.
"Yeah, it's kind of dorky." Carlos adds, also holding back a laugh.
"It's magic, it doesn't have to look scary." Mal says defensively. She then opens her spellbook, turning to the page she's looking for, and reciting the spell. "Magic spindle do not linger. Make my victim prick a finger." There was a slight pause, but nothing happened.
"Impressive." Jay remarks mockingly.
"I got chills." Carlos adds.
"Hold on." Mal tells them before going to the next line in the spell. "Prick the finger, prick it deep. Send my enemy off to sleep."
This time, the guard stood up, approached the spinning wheel, and sure enough, pricked himself on the needle and fell asleep on the platform it stood on.
"Not bad." Demitri comments.
"Not so dorky now, huh?" Mal responds. She then tried to open the door, but it was locked.
"Stand back." Jay says confidently, stepping back a ways so he could charge the door and kick it open.
"Better have a spell for this, or Jay might wake up the guard." Demitri says quickly to Mal, who's flipping through pages in her book.
"Make it easy, make it quick, open up without a kick." She reads, and the door opens the second Jay tried to kick it in, causing him to fall. The girls and Demitri laughed at this before entering, Jay and Carlos eventually following.
Following Evie's lead, the group ran through the museum and up some stairs before finding the Gallery of Villains. This caught their attention, stopping to look at the two sets of statues. The first had Cruella chasing the dalmatians, Jafar doing a menacing pose, the Evil Queen holding her poison apple, and Maleficent standing in an intimidating yet elegant pose. The second had Captain Hook also standing menacingly, Ursula standing over her cauldron, Gaston with his hunting gear, and Hades on his Underworld Chariot with Pain and Panic behind him. The kids all stood in surprise for a moment before Jay broke the silence.
"Well, the wand's not here. Let's bounce." He says.
"Yeah, let's go." Demitri adds, and they start to head out of the gallery. Evie eventually found the room the wand was in, but then they noticed Mal wasn't with them. Demitri offered to go find her, and went back to the gallery, where she was standing in front of the statue of Maleficent. "Yo, Mal." He says, catching her attention, "Evie found the wand, let's not get left behind."
"Okay." Was all she said in response before following him back to the others, who were waiting by the stairs.
The group then found the room where the wand was in, and they circled the barricades surrounding it. Jay started to climb under to snatch the wand, but Mal warned him against it. He ignored her, confident in his abilities of theft, and reached for the wand, only to be knocked back by a barrier and the alarms going off.
"A force field and a siren?" Carlos asks over the noise.
"That's just a little excessive." Jay adds.
"Who cares, we gotta leave. That guard's definitely been woken up now." Demitri adds.
The group was able to successfully evade the guard and sneak back out of the museum, running back to the dorms.
"Way to go, Jay. Now we have to go to school tomorrow!" Mal scolds.
"How was I supposed to know that would happen?" Jay protests.
"Whatever. It's over now. We can figure something else out another time." Demitri says, "In the meantime, we can at least get familiar enough with the area, and maybe find some people that could help us get closer without them knowing."
"That's actually not a bad plan." Evie states.
"Fine. We'll start with that until we get something better." Mal says. "See you guys tomorrow."
With that, the group went to their rooms and called it a night.
