Chapter 3
Stone squeezes through the minuscule crevice. He perks up when the whispering intensifies. He walks through a narrow tunnel until it widens out and becomes a large cavern.
The cave is filled with stone teeth hanging down, many of them attached to the moist ground. The stars and moon shine through a hole in the roof. Dripping constantly echoes throughout the cave.
In addition to the dripping, Stone hears the whispers again. He can almost make them out, but they are still slightly muffled.
He walks around the cave, examining the splendor of it, when the moon comes in full view of the hole.
Its light strikes a lone puddle on the ground and the whispering becomes clear.
Stone feels himself drawn by the soothing voice emanating from the pool of water.
He slowly peers into the puddle. Almost immediately, he jumps back in surprise. It appeared to him that there was a different cat staring at him through the pool.
"Stone, you are going senile."
The tom builds up his courage and approaches the pool again. A thin cat stares back at him, his fur smeared with mud and hanging off of his body.
